Punjab to HC: No plan to arrest Khaira in DA case
The government counsel also told the high court bench of justice Tribhuvan Dahiya that vigilance has not even issued him a notice to join the probe. The submissions were made during the hearing of a plea filed by Khaira seeking anticipatory bail.
The Congress leader, in his plea, had submitted that a vigilance inquiry was pending since February 12, 2024, regarding the allegations of disproportionate assets and there was an apprehension that he would be arrested in the matter anytime now.
'The apprehension is evident on account of the fact that the petitioner, being an opposition MLA, has been opposing various acts of omission and commission on the part of the state government, and more particularly the chief minister,' lawyers appearing for Khaira had submitted, adding that the vigilance department was having jurisdiction all over the state 'An FIR can be lodged in any district. Hence, he has approached the high court straightway without approaching the lower courts,' they mentioned.
The petition was subsequently withdrawn in view of the state's stand.

Vote theft through scientific means is dangerous to democracy in all States: Congress MP
'Vote theft' through scientific means by the Bharatiya Janata Party is dangerous to democracy in all States, said Virudhunagar MP B. Manickam Tagore. Addressing reporters here on Thursday, Mr. Tagore said that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, has exposed how one lakh votes were added in Bengaluru Central Lok Sabha constituency before the 2024 Parliamentary election. 'This had led to the BJP winning the seat with a small margin of 30,000 votes,' he said. The BJP had claimed that it would win 400 seats in the Lok Sabha election, but ended up winning only 239 seats. Similar, 'vote theft' had been done in 48 other constituencies too, he said. Hence, the BJP Government should not be allowed to continue in power in the Centre, he said. When the opposition parties pointed to this irregularity and sought to discuss the issue, their demand was rejected in the Parliament. Three hundred MPs of the opposition parties marched towards the Election Commission office in Delhi. However, the Election Commission did not meet them to clarify, he said. The Congress MP said that it was anti-democratic exercise to conduct Assembly election in Bihar after deleting 18% of the votes of the opposition parties by way of Special Intensive Revision of voters list. In this backdrop, Mr. Rahul Gandhi has planned to take out 'Voters' Right' yatra in Bihar for 17 days from August 17. 'While the BJP partyman gets five votes in the election, it is only one for the common man. For the opposition parties, even that one vote is denied,' he said. Stating that such scientific way of stealing votes was dangerous in other States where BJP was in power, he said the Election Commission was hand in glove with the BJP in such an irregularity.

Pb Cong chief hails AAP retreat on land policy, predicts '27 rout
Ludhiana: Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring Wednesday said the AAP govt's withdrawal of its "anti-farmer" land pooling policy in the state marked a decisive retreat, warning that the ruling party could soon be barred from villages across the state. Addressing senior party leaders in Ludhiana, Warring likened AAP's future to that of its "A-team," the BJP, which he said had been "banished" from rural and urban Punjab. He predicted a severe defeat for AAP in the 2027 assembly elections, accusing it of following the BJP's "rule book". Warring, who also inaugurated six open-air gyms in the city funded through his Local Area Development (LAD) Fund, said Congress was intensifying its outreach to voters. He and senior leaders are meeting residents and grassroots workers to gather feedback on both the government and the party's strategy. He argued AAP had lost credibility through repeated failures and an alleged attempt to "loot" farmers' land, while the SAD was "vertically split" and the BJP "nowhere in the race." "People see only hope in the Congress," Warring said. tnn Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). 'Exhili-Rating' For India: How S&P Upgrade Strengthens Negotiating Power In Trade Talks
Last Updated: The agency has raised India's long-term unsolicited sovereign credit ratings to 'BBB' from 'BBB-', and its short-term ratings to 'A-2' from 'A-3' The mood is upbeat with the S&P rating system upgrading India. They have raised India's long-term unsolicited sovereign credit ratings to 'BBB" from 'BBB-', and its short-term ratings to 'A-2" from 'A-3". The outlook on the long-term rating is stable. This is seen as a significant acknowledgement of India's growth story, especially given the cynicism within the Congress and Rahul Gandhi endorsing American President Donald Trump's comment that India was a dead economy. The global ratings agency stated, 'The stable outlook reflects our view that continued policy stability and high infrastructure investment will support India's long-term growth prospects. That, along with cautious fiscal and monetary policy that moderates the government's elevated debt and interest burden, will underpin the rating over the next 24 months." This is significant considering the uncertainty over the Indian market and trade, given the face-off between India and the US. There is concern that high tariffs could impact India's economy. However, the agency acknowledged these apprehensions and said, 'Though the U.S. is India's largest trading partner, we do not expect the 50% tariffs (if imposed) to pose a material drag on growth. India's exports to the U.S. constitute about 2% of GDP. Factoring in sectoral exemptions on pharmaceuticals and consumer electronics, the exposure of Indian exports subjected to tariffs is lower at 1.2% of GDP. Though this may eventually result in a one-off hit to growth, we envisage the overall impact to be marginal and will not derail India's long-term growth prospects." The Indian government has been appreciated for its political stability. The agency mentioned that with the BJP having a majority in Parliament, the formulation of laws and schemes becomes easier. It has predicted a GDP growth of about 6.5%. Many government schemes and initiatives by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, like Jan Dhan, push to MSMEs, Ayushman Bharat, to name a few, have helped the economy. Additionally, the commerce ministry has released data showing that this quarter alone, trade has increased in many critical sectors like gems, mechanical goods, and auto parts. While there is concern about trade ties between the US and India, the ministry remains hopeful. The ministry stated, 'Commerce ministry—negotiations with US are ongoing… talks are on… BTA talks are engaged… the US is an important trade partner for us just as we are for them." These ratings are also important as India is poised to sign several bilateral trade agreements with other countries. A good rating will give India more power to negotiate. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive.
