TikTok begins US testing of 'Footnotes' similar to 'Community Notes' by X

Reuters16-04-2025

April 16 (Reuters) - TikTok on Wednesday started testing "Footnotes" in the United States, a feature similar to "Community Notes" used by X and Meta (META.O), opens new tab, as the short-video platform awaits a deal that will secure its presence in the country.
The feature allows users to add "more context" and "relevant information" about content on the platform, the company said.
"It will add to our suite of measures that help people understand the reliability of content and access authoritative sources, including our content labels, search banners, our fact-checking program and more," TikTok's head of operations and trust and safety Adam Presser said in a blog post.
TikTok became the latest company to add a crowd-sourced model to its platform with this update, after Meta in March began testing "Community Notes" in the U.S. using technology developed by Elon Musk-owned X.
The future of TikTok, used by nearly half of all Americans, has been up in the air since a 2024 law, passed with overwhelming bipartisan support, required China-based parent, ByteDance, to divest the app by January 19.
U.S. President Donald Trump extended that deadline for the second time in April and reassured a potential deal is still "on the table".
TikTok said on Wednesday users in the U.S. can apply to be a "Footnotes" contributor and the company will also notify those who meet the criteria for eligibility.
Footnotes contributors must be 18 years or above with an account more than six months old and without a recent history of a community guidelines violation.
TikTok said it would allow contributors with differing opinions to vote on the helpfulness of a footnote.

Reform chairman REVERSES decision to quit party just 48 hours after resigning as he blames departure on ‘exhaustion'

REFORM UK chairman Zia Yusuf has reversed his move to quit the party just 48 hours after he dramatically resigned his post. The businessman had orchestrated much of Reform's recent success at local elections, but now says his sudden decision to quit on Thursday was due to "exhaustion". But despite previously saying he no longer believed that trying to get Nigel Farage elected PM was a "good use of my time", the businessman will now return to the party in a new role. This fresh position will see him head up a "UK DOGE team", inspired by Elon Musk's government "efficiency" department in the US. In a statement on X, Mr Yusuf said: "Over the last 24 hours I have received a huge number of lovely and heartfelt messages from people who have expressed their dismay at my resignation, urging me to reconsider. "After 11 months of working as a volunteer to build a political party from scratch, with barely a single day off, my tweet was a decision born of exhaustion." He added: "I know the mission is too important and I cannot let people down. "So, I will be continuing my work with Reform, my commitment redoubled." Mr Yusuf sensationally quit the party on Thursday, saying he did not believe getting Nigel Farage elected as PM was a "good use of my time". More to follow... Katie Miller, Stephen Miller's wife, in a ‘tricky situation' after Musk and Trump's falling out

Katie Miller, the wife of White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, recently departed from the Trump administration to work for Elon Musk, days before the spectacular falling out between President Donald Trump and the billionaire. The 33-year-old Miller was one of Musk's first hires as he established the Department of Government Efficiency and began reducing the federal workforce. She left the administration alongside him last week. Like Musk, she was designated as a 'special government employee' during her time in government, which allowed her to work for Musk and Trump, as well as in the private sector, simultaneously. Miller even helped to set up the departing press conference in the Oval Office featuring Musk and Trump, according to The Wall Street Journal. Musk and Trump's relationship fell apart in public on Thursday, with Musk unfollowing Stephen Miller on X. Friends of Miller told the paper that she was in a difficult position between Trump and Musk. 'Katie Miller was a critical reason DOGE was able to get off the ground and deliver massive cuts to waste, fraud, and abuse for the American people,' White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told the outlet. This isn't the first time that Miller has been caught in the crossfire of a Trump feud. Miller also worked for then-Vice President Mike Pence when Trump began attacking him for not aiding him in his attempt to overturn the 2020 election towards the end of his first term. However, at the time of the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, she was on maternity leave. In December last year, Miller became one of the first DOGE staffers announced by the then-president-elect. However, her work at DOGE soon became the catalyst for disagreements with the White House, where top Trump aides argued that she hadn't sufficiently convinced Musk to work alongside the administration. Top administration officials told The Journal that she often spoke on behalf of Musk, issued orders about what agencies should do, and how the government's work should be communicated. Officials were concerned about her continuing work for P2. However, she left the firm after The Journal published an article about her work there. She then also departed the White House to work for Musk, just before the blowup between the billionaire and the president. Miller has been described as having endless energy and as being fiercely protective of her husband. Current and previous co-workers told The Journal that she could go from charming to abrasive. Those who know her told the paper that she has a 'YOLO' tattoo on the inside of her lip. Miller has at times worked for clients while lobbying the government, simultaneously addressing government issues. She quickly rose through the ranks after being hired in 2015 by Republican U.S. Sen. Steve Daines of Montana. Former Daines aide Jason Thielman told The Journal that 'Everything was always at full speed, full throttle.' 'Sometimes, she just exhausted people, and they gave her what she wanted,' he added of her battles with reporters. She joined the Department of Homeland Security during Trump's first term before working for Pence. It was during her time at DHS that she met Stephen Miller. 'Every Trump White House had its divisions, but she was always willing to go to bat to protect the VP's prerogatives,' Pence's Chief of Staff Marc Short told the paper. Following the insurrection, Stephen Miller kept working for Trump, and she remained in Pence's office. While she was placed on Pence's postpresidential payroll, partly because she needed healthcare, according to Pence's advisors, his office subsequently severed connections with her after Stephen Miller began working with then-President Trump. He continued to target his former vice president. After joining the Republican consulting firm P2 Public Affairs following Trump's 2021 departure from office, she subsequently became the top point of contact between Musk and the 2024 Trump campaign. She often joined Musk at events and then began advising Robert F. Kennedy, who later became Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare, now known as Secretary of Health and Human Services. Pence opposed Kennedy's appointment, and in January of this year, Miller took aim at her former boss, saying that he only had 'family values' when it was 'politically expedient' and called him a 'footnote of American history.'

I jetted to China to furnish my UK house – for £1k I got a king-sized bed, mattress, tables, chairs and MORE

A YOUNG woman has jetted off to China to furnish her UK house. Shirley Bekker took to social media to share her experience, leaving people stunned by just how affordable it was. 2 She decided to spend six days in Foshan, China, to find furniture for her new house. And it seems to have worked in her favour; not only does she cut out the middleman by going to the manufacturers directly, but she was also able to get her furniture customised to her liking. Shirley spent the day looking for furniture for her bedroom and managed to kit it out for just £1,000. First, she looked for the ideal mattress to take home along with a bedframe. She ended up finding both and was able to customise the colour of the bedframe. In total, the two pieces cost her just £350. Next, she spotted a large chair and foot stool for her bedroom to match her new bed frame. "Shirley almost choked on her own saliva when the man said £185 for the set. But she quickly calmed down," the video read. "After reverse search imaging the chair, it revealed that the chair alone costs thousands of pounds in the UK. Eventually, she shook hands at £165." Next, she found a dressing table and chair that she was also able to customise for £170. Shoppers urged 'not to blink' and get their hands on Home Bargains garden essential that sold out fast last time and it makes your garden extra cute - TikTok homebargainsofficialuk While she was meant to be shopping for her bedroom, Shirley got distracted with the outside furniture and picked up an egg chair for just £45. She also bought a table and chair set for outside as well as a TV stand. "I spent £1000 today and managed to buy: king-sized custom bed, perfect mattress for my back, egg chair, Bistro table and chair, TV table, 6 handmade ceramic pots, dressing mirror, Japanese style chair and pouffe," added Shirley. The clip went viral on her TikTok account @ shirley_bekker with 319k views and 47k likes. People were quick to share their thoughts and were eager to try it for themselves. One person wrote: "Ok I've seen enough… anyone wanna go China and go halves on a shipping container to the UK???" Another commented: 'How much to ship to the UK? Cos I'm gonna need to book a flight to China." "Oh so we're being ripped off real bad here in the UK," penned a third. Meanwhile a fourth said: "This is crazy. I might make a trip too." "I have never been so influenced to go to China,' claimed a fifth. Someone else added: '£350 for the whole bed is insane."
