RTÉ boss to address staff today over new voluntary redundancy scheme to cut 400 jobs
STAFF AT RTÉ will be addressed by boss Kevin Bakhurst later this afternoon to provide further details on a voluntary redundancy scheme, opened at the broadcaster yesterday as part of its agreed strategy to cut 400 jobs.
In order to secure a €20m bailout from the government last year, RTÉ launched its
'New Direction Strategy'
which included earmarked plans to
cut the workforce
, limit presenters' salaries and update its online offerings.
It agreed to cut 400 jobs through a voluntary redundancy scheme, which opened yesterday. Employees with between two and more than ten years of service are invited to consider the programme, which has limited payouts to €300,000.

An email sent to staff by Bakhurst yesterday said that the Department of Public Expenditure had given the station approval to run the scheme this year and that any future programme may be less financially beneficial to applicants.
Each payment issued to staff will be calculated by multiplying employees' years of service and different rates of pay per their exit salary. For example, those working at RTÉ for two years will be entitled to four weeks of pay for every year service, or eight weeks of pay.
Applications will close on 23 May, with final decisions due in September following discussions between the RTÉ leadership team and Department of Media. Bakhurst and the broadcaster's HR director will address staff later today with more information.
RTÉ was plunged into crisis in June 2023 when the State broadcaster revealed it under-declared fees to Tubridy, its then-highest-paid staff member. The scandal widened as a series of other
financial and governance issues
emerged.
It was later approved by Cabinet in July 2024 that
RTÉ would receive €725m over three years
as part of a new multi-annual funding model, which also made changes to how much control the state has over the public service broadcasters' finances.

'Super Garden' recreated at local school to honour late gardener
The wife of a talented gardener who died shortly after winning RTÉ's Super Garden competition has said she is delighted to see his creation living on in a local school in their hometown. John Dooley and his wife Elizabeth from Castledermot, Co Kildare, won the top prize for their design "Past, Present, and Future" last year. Their feature garden, which was displayed at last year's Bloom festival, emphasised the importance of using land to produce food and protect the environment. John, a former farm manager and gardener who was self-taught, focused on pollinators, medicinal plants, and vegetables. Tragically, just one day after he began clearing away his design when Bloom ended last June, John suffered a heart attack at home and died. Now, his wife Elizabeth has marked the first anniversary of his death by opening "John's Garden" at Scoil Diarmada in Castledermot, where he donated the creation after his big win. 'The night before his anniversary, I thought: 'Oh no, I will have to go through this ordeal again, and I'd be crying and having red cheeks all the time,'' she told the Irish Examiner."I told myself: Get up and get ready. His garden and the school have really kept me going, this is what John wanted and that has helped me 'John and I were very close and had similar interests, so I talk to him every day. Cutting the ribbon at the official opening at the front of the school, Elizabeth told locals: 'John would really love this, and you're all here now in his memory, and I wish everyone joy as they come into the garden.' John, who was 62 and originally from Killeen in Co Laois, was described as a 'laid-back man with a huge talent for gardening'. 'There was nothing he couldn't do,' said his wife. 'I entered him for the Super Garden." The couple, who celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary last July, were 19 and 22 when they got married. 'He came to the dances here in Castledermot and we met there. He was in good health, but suffered a heart attack around nine years ago. But he was going well. He tended to the garden in the local Church of the Assumption after he was made redundant as a farm manager. "That's where we got married there, and that is where his funeral Mass was too.' Elizabeth said she now finds some solace knowing the garden has been donated to the local children. 'His dreams and wishes will live on in that garden," she added. Ray D'Arcy reflects on radio career as he opens up about 'calm' home life
RTE star Ray D'Arcy has reflected on 'finding his feet' when he went from being a children's presenter to a radio star. D'Arcy's first position as TV presenter began in 1988 on the show Jo Maxi before he replaced Ian Dempsey as the presenter of The Den, RTÉ's flagship children's television series in 1990. In 2015, he began hosting his Radio One show, after leaving Today FM after 14 years. Reflecting on his RTE Radio One show, he said: 'I suppose most programmes eventually, unless they're current affairs or news programmes, evolve around the person who's presenting them, their strengths and weaknesses and their interests. 'If not, it doesn't work because the person who's presenting it needs to feel strongly about things and be interested in things or else it'll show. "In the early days, it was very much about finding my feet. I'd come from children's television. I was an adult, but probably hadn't really given a lot of thought to a lot of the stuff I should have because I didn't have to. 'Then radio allowed me to, because I had to form my own opinions about things rather than borrow somebody else's. It happened organically and the format of the programme wasn't prescriptive when we started, it allowed us to do everything. 'We found that people were sharing their lives with us and they trusted us. Now, we don't do as much as I'd like to for various reasons. But that was very encouraging,' he told the RTE Guide. But he said the interviews he was most nervous about were the ones with people wanting to share their personal stories. "The ones that I get most nervous about are the ones that you feel you owe the people involved, that you feel you have to do a good job for them. "They're mostly not well-known people who have decided, for whatever reason, to tell you their story. 'Oftentimes, it's a heartbreaking story, and you feel then under pressure not to mess it up." The Kildare native also opened up about his home life with his wife Jenny and their two children, 18-year-old Katie and Tom, who turns 13 next month. Ray and Jenny tied the knot in 2013 and says their relationship and home life works so well because they are first and foremost friends. The radio star added that cutting out alcohol has also helped to create a calm home environment. "Jenny and I are best friends and companions and husband and wife, and we've two healthy children and they're lovely," Ray said. "We're very lucky and we appreciate that. "[Life at home] is very calm. I'd say a huge part of that is because neither Jenny nor I drink. "Not that we were big drinkers, but it has brought a calm into our life that you can only experience when you do it. "Drink for a lot of reasons, even if you don't drink that much, just brings spikes in moods." Ray's daughter Kate is doing her Leaving Cert at the moment and Ray is supporting her through what can be a stressful time. He told the RTÉ Guide: "I was talking to a guy recently and he described having somebody in Leaving Cert as playing that winter Olympic sport [curling], where you push the thing down and then everybody paves the way in front of it. "It's like that and we're happy to do that. We're there for whatever she wants. "I still have nightmares about my Leaving Cert all these years later. Now, I don't share that with Kate." Tom, meanwhile, will officially be a teenager when he celebrates his 13th birthday next month. Ray added: "Kate has been a teenager for five years, so she went off and did her own thing. And we're going to lose Tom soon now because he's hitting 13 next month. "You can just see it - I asked him for a hug the other day on the couch and he wasn't up for it. The same evening his mother asked for a hug but she got one." Ray acknowledges his children's experience of growing up is very different to his one. He told the publication: "I came from a family of nine, and now we have two children. "We lived in a council house, a very small house, so it was completely different. "As a father, you want to give your kids everything, but yet you want to pass on some of your own values, which is probably an impossible task, but you do try." Ray and Jenny have rules at home but wouldn't consider themselves to be strict parents. "You'd have to ask my children. They'd say that we are stricter than their friends' parents. Now look, we're not. "We've encountered strictness. We're not strict. We're very relaxed and we're here for them. "Obviously, there are rules, and all households have them. "But we've often said, we're not laissez-faire and we're not dictatorial. We're somewhere in the middle."

Watchdog warns that Government's fiscal plans 'lack credibility' as spending to overrun again
THE GOVERNMENT'S FISCAL plans 'lack credibility', the Irish Fiscal Advisory Council has warned, as the Department of Public Expenditure has failed to turn over its monthly spending profiles to allow the council to forecast beyond 2026. The council's chairperson Seamus Coffey yesterday briefed reporters on today's Fiscal Assessment Report. The report, with the tagline 'Ireland's outlook: strong today, uncertain tomorrow', warned of the current volatility of Ireland's longtime reliance on corporation tax as uncertainty arises from mooted tariffs from the US and further trade tensions. Coffey highlighted that despite the strength of Ireland's economy and financial surpluses, without these factors, there is a structural deficit of 2.4% of gross national income (previously known as gross national product) – equivalent to €2,500 per worker. The council has been unable to construct a medium-term forecast due to the department's failure to turn over spending profiles, as well as the government's refusal to commit to a fiscal rule. Fiscal rules are permanent constraints on a government's fiscal policy. It is suggested that the failure to turn over spending profiles to the council and the fact that departmental spending ceilings for 2026 and 2027 have not been published is due to potential transfer of functions within the department that is ongoing. The council's report found that the government is overspending in certain areas but emphasised the importance of investing in infrastructure and competitiveness. Employment is at a record high. The growth has been driven by the state and multinationals. Financial services, computer programming and basic pharma products account for roughly 300,000 people in employment in Ireland, the council said. 'Choices must be made. You can't do everything at once,' Coffey said of the government's list of stated priorities. 'In some areas, we can look at maybe where spending could happen that mightn't generate domestic pressures. Advertisement 'When it comes to infrastructure, a lot of it probably has to be supplied domestically. So you look at housing, transport, an issue there is if you spend additional money, where are the resources going to come from to generate the additional output? 'If the unemployment rate is just over 4%, you don't have this big stock of construction staff just sitting there and say, 'Oh, we're spending three billion on extra infrastructure that's going to give us his extra output'. It might just end up having more money chasing fixed resources and just driving up the prices.' Concerns were raised regarding the credibility of budget forecasts, as the department has not accounted for spending overruns in 2024 and 2025. It has also not accounted for the once-off double week Christmas bonus social welfare payment. The predicted overspend is mostly the result of poor budgeting, the council said. Corporation tax is likely to be higher than forecast, the report found. This has been put down to BEPS (anti-base erosion profit shifting) reforms that mean groups with a turnover of over €750m will pay a 15% minimum rate of tax in every jurisdiction in which they operate. Some 30 to 40% of corporation tax paid by US multinational companies in Ireland comes from three companies, the council said its analysis suggests. It did not identify the three firms. Ireland's record export of pharma products earlier this year mean that exports are likely to be above its forecast, even if the level weakens considerably across the remainder of 2025. The Irish Fiscal Advisory Council has issued four key recommendations to the government on the back of its report, the first being for the government to commit to a fiscal rule. It also recommended that the government use budgetary policy to 'reduce the ups and downs of the economic cycle', meaning that it shows restraint when the economy is string, like at present, and being more generous when it is struggling. The council advised that the government set realistic spending forecasts and move towards medium-term budgeting, calling on it to include previous overruns to paint a more accurate and clearer picture of Ireland's current fiscal situation.
