Social historian and cultural anthropologist Badri Narayan Tiwari takes over as TISS V-C
In an order issued on Wednesday, Ministry of Education, Government of India, stated, 'From the date of his assumption of the charge, Professor Badri Narayan will serve as V-C of TISS for a tenure of five years or until further orders, whichever is earlier.'
The government order was followed by an order by the GB Pant Social Science Institute, relieving him of the charge as its director and the TISS issuing a notification that he has assumed charge.
Tiwari, a social historian and cultural anthropologist, will be the first vice-chancellor appointed as per the new regulations that took effect after TISS came under the purview of the Central Government. Previously, the institute was headed by the director picked by a governing body appointed by the Tata Trust, the sponsoring organisation. The governing body established a selection committee that included a nominee from the University Grants Commission (UGC).
In September 2023, Prof Shalini Bharat stepped down from the post of vice-chancellor after completing her term of five years. Professor Manoj Kumar Tiwari, Director of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Mumbai, was then given additional charge as the TISS vice-chancellor.
UGC rules stipulate that deemed-to-be universities receiving over 50 per cent of their funding from the Government will have their heads appointed by the Central Government.
An executive council has replaced the governing council at TISS, with the government-appointed vice-chancellor serving as its chairperson. The Tata Trust is no longer the primary authority in vice-chancellor appointments.
As per the changes, the Ministry of Education appointed Professor Dhirendra Pal Singh as chancellor of the TISS in April 2024 for five years.
Educated at the University of Allahabad, Prof Badri Narayan Tiwari earned his MA and PhD in modern history. He was formerly associated with Jawaharlal Nehru University's Centre for the Study of Discrimination and Exclusion. His research spans social history, cultural anthropology and Dalit studies.
As per information shared by the TISS, Professor Tiwari's interests lie in democracy and development, popular culture, social and anthropological history, Dalit and subaltern issues and the relationship between power and culture. Besides having written a number of articles both in English and Hindi, he has recently authored 'Republic of Hindutva: How the Sangh Is Reshaping Indian Democracy'.
Some of his other books are — Fractured Tales: Invisibles in Indian Democracy', The Making of the Dalit Public in North India: Uttar Pradesh 1950-present; Women Heroes and Dalit Assertion in North India, Fascinating Hindutva – Saffron Politics and Dalit Mobilisation.
An eminent Hindi poet, Professor Tiwari is the recipient of the Sahitya academy award 2022 for his notable poetry collection 'Tumdi ke Shabd'. He is also recipient of Kanhaiya Lal Sethia Award for Poetry 2025 by Jaipur Literature Festival Committee for his contribution to Hindi poetry.

Commitment to truth, authenticity vital as fighting fake news becomes a daily battle: Nirmala Lakshman
At a time when countering fake news has become a daily battle, commitment to truth and authenticity is the most cardinal virtue of journalism that needs to be practised, Nirmala Lakshman, Chairperson, The Hindu Group Publishing Private Ltd., said here on Saturday. Ms. Lakshman, who is the author of The Tamils: A Portrait Of A Community, was in conversation with Col. David Devasahayam, chairman and managing director of the Radiant Group of Companies, on the topic 'Re-imagining Tamil social fabric today' at the Radiant Wellness Conclave. To a question on social wellness and women, she said, 'Over the years, because of legislation, movements, and protests, there has been progress in terms of gender equality. But we have not really scratched the surface. Social and economic disadvantages still keep women in a much lower focus, both from the national point of view and from their own social wellness aspect. We have a long way to go.' She expressed concern over caste-based killings and violence against members of the Dalit community. On inclusivity and acceptance in Tamil Nadu, she said rural India was well exposed to the outside world. Several families honoured heroes they revered by naming children after them, such as Lenin and Stalin. 'It is a particularly wonderful Tamil characteristic to look at the world outside. It is not just about Tamil Nadu or Tamilians, contrary to the notion that Tamils are insular,' she added. Nine aspects of wellness In his keynote address, Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor spoke on nine aspects of wellness such as physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, social, environmental, occupational, financial and cultural. He expressed concern over the prevalence of obesity and diabetes, particularly among urban youth, and highlighted the negative correlation between screen time and mental health. In a conversation with journalist Barkha Dutt on 'Planetary care in crisis', Pasumai Thaayagam Foundation president Sowmiya Anbumani said though Tamil Nadu got enough rainfall, the State was unable to tap its potential due to inadequate storage facilities. She stressed the need to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and move towards alternative energy sources. During the conclave, veteran actor Shabana Azmi was honoured with the Radiant Lifetime Achievement Award for her contribution to Indian and international cinema.

Zelensky To FLEE Ukraine Before Trump-Putin Alaska Meet, New Leader Named? Russian Ally's Big Claim
AI-GENERATED ENGLISH TRANSLATIONBelarusian President Alexander Lukashenko stated that Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky will be able to escape in the event of joint mobilisation of the Russian and Belarusian armies, unlike his people, during his interview with the US journalist Simon Shuster on Friday. "Do not force us to mobilise. That's 150 million people. If that happens, that's the end. Then it does not look like war in Ukraine any longer. I see Volodya Zelensky's behaviour. I don't believe he's such a heroic brave man. He has somewhere to escape. But where will the Ukrainians run if we mobilise?" Lukashenko said. Read More

Dalit forum condemns attack on YouTubers
Mangaluru: The Karnataka Dalit Horata Samiti condemned the attack on YouTubers and a reporter from a private Kannada news channel in Dharmasthala recently. Samiti district leader SP Anand told reporters on Saturday, that while the Dakshina Kannada police arrested one person in connection with the incident, around 50-60 individuals were involved in the attack. "All those responsible must be arrested and booked under stringent laws," he demanded. Anand pointed out that one of the injured, cameraman Abhishek, belongs to the Dalit community. "The FIR should also include provisions of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, along with sections related to robbery," he said. The Samiti plans to petition the DK superintendent of police and home minister on the matter. According to Anand, the miscreants alleged that false propaganda was being spread on social media about Dharmasthala's sacred place. "We too respect Dharmasthala and are not against it. We only want the police to identify those who orchestrated the attacks," he said. He welcomed the Special Investigation Team's probe into the alleged mass burial case in Dharmasthala and urged it to bring out the truth. "It is an attack on the democratic process, which is aimed at uncovering the truth," he said. Samiti leader Anil Kumar alleged that the assault was a deliberate conspiracy to suppress facts. "All wrongdoers must be punished. Law is equal for all in this country," he asserted. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
