Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz placed on paid leave due to MLB investigation
Cleveland Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz was placed on leave Thursday amid an MLB investigation, the team announced.

Ortiz, 26, will go on paid leave through the All-Star break, per Zack Meisel of The Athletic.

The news comes just hours before Ortiz was expected to take the mound against the Chicago Cubs. With Ortiz on leave, the Guardians will turn to Joey Cantillo to start Thursday's game.
After a promising season in 2024, in which Ortiz posted a 3.32 ERA over 37 appearances with the Pittsburgh Pirates, he was traded to the Guardians in December. He opened the season in Cleveland's rotation, and has a 4.36 ERA over 88 2/3 innings.
In 16 starts, Ortiz has a 4-9 record. His nine losses lead the American League.
The news comes in the midst of a disappointing season for the Guardians. Despite entering the year with playoff aspirations, the team has a 40-44 record, and sits in third place in the American League Central.

Mercury Star Satou Sabally Sends Brutally Honest Message to WNBA Amid Tension
Mercury Star Satou Sabally Sends Brutally Honest Message to WNBA Amid Tension originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Less than 24 hours after the WNBA celebrated the league's biggest expansion yet, one of The W's brightest stars called out the decision makers loud and clear. Advertisement Phoenix Mercury forward Satou Sabally didn't hold back when she spoke to reporters Tuesday. The WNBPA rep straight up called the league's latest CBA proposal a 'slap in the face,' per Front Office Sports. Sabally's frustration came as the league announced three new teams: Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia, that will push the WNBA to a record 18 franchises by 2030. 'I love to see the league growing,' Sabally said. 'But how cool would it also be to have a little bit of expansion on the rosters? Let's focus on the teams that have everything set up right now.' Phoenix Mercury forward Satou Sabally passes the ball against the New York Liberty© Joe Camporeale-Imagn Images The ongoing conversation comes as the WNBA is negotiating a new CBA with players as the current agreement expires in Oct. Players want more roster spots and improved pay before the league spreads itself thinner. Advertisement According to Colin Salao of Front Office Sports, the league sent its first proposal to the union last week. The insider's source revealed the pitch didn't fully address the players' concerns. The money flowing into the league is more lucrative than ever. Expansion teams paid a reported $250 million per franchise. The NBA and WNBA secured a new media rights deal worth as much as $3 billion. Still, players feel their share hasn't grown fast enough. Indiana Fever players Sophie Cunningham and Sydney Colson made it clear last week. 'It's time for a CBA that reflects our true value,' Cunningham said, per Sports Illustrated. Advertisement Even Caitlin Clark chimed in Tuesday on Instagram Live. 'We get more for [the Commissioner's Cup] than you do if you're a [WNBA champion]," Clark said candidly. "Makes no sense. Someone tell Cathy [Engelbert] to help us out.' The clock is ticking on a new deal, and Sabally is making sure everyone's watching. Kay Adams' first pitch at Cubs game wasn't even close to what she wanted
FanDuel TV host Kay Adams said she wanted 'accuracy' when she threw out the first pitch at Wrigley Field before the Cubs-Guardians game Wednesday. However, it didn't go as planned for the host of the 'Up & Adams' show. Adams threw the ball near the first base line, and Chicago's mascot, Clark the Cub, had to run after it. Advertisement The Chicago native, who sported a Henry Rowengartner jersey from the Cubs-centric movie 'Rookie of the Year,' hugged Clark afterwards. She was a good sport about it and joked with some fans on X. Advertisement 3 Kay Adams threw out the first pitch at the July 2 Cubs game. Advertisement In a separate video, Adams explained that she was initially scheduled to throw the first pitch at Tuesday's Cubs game, but she missed it after getting a call to fly to Kansas City and interview Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. 'The Cubs being truly incredible were like, 'You know what, you can do it Wednesday,'' Adams said in the video ahead of Wednesday's game. 'I was scratched last night. A little elbow soreness. I don't know what my ERA is. 3 Kay Adams is pictured at the 2024 ESPY Awards held at the Dolby Theatre. Variety via Getty Images 'I have no power. I have withered to bone. I just want accuracy. I'm going to stand in front of the mound.' Advertisement When it comes to bad first pitches, Adams isn't in a club of her own. Last month, former Titans offensive lineman Taylor Lewan went viral for his awful first pitch at a Cardinals game. Lewan threw the ball near the first base on-deck circle where several people jumped out of the way. 'Juuuuuust a bit outside,' the Titans X account wrote at the time, referencing Uecker's call from the movie 'Major League.' 'My own team,' Lewan replied with a sad face emoji. The southpaw, who called it 'the worst day of my athletic career,' vowed to redeem himself. 50 Cent still gets trolled for his visit to Citi Field, where he couldn't help but laugh at his terrible first pitch attempt for the Mets in 2014.
