Everton remain in talks with Villarreal over Thierno Barry, hopeful of reaching a deal

New York Times6 hours ago

Talks are ongoing between Everton and Villarreal over a move for Thierno Barry.
The Athletic reported in the Transfer DealSheet on June 4 that Barry, 22, was being tracked by Everton, as the club look to bring in a new striker this summer to compete with Beto.
The two clubs are yet to reach an agreement for the French striker, but Everton are hopeful of completing a deal. The Premier League club, however, are not believed to be the only side in the running for Barry.

Everton's pursuit of Barry is complicated by his participation at the Under-21 European Championship with France, plus a release clause set at €40million (£34.1m).
The club would prefer to negotiate with Villarreal rather than trigger that clause. A bid in excess of €30m (£25.5m) is likely to be needed to tempt the La Liga club into selling.
Everton struggled for goals in 2024-25, with their league tally of 42 the lowest of any of the 17 clubs to avoid relegation.
Barry joined Villarreal on a five-year deal from Swiss club Basel last summer and scored 11 goals across 37 appearances in his debut campaign in Spain.
He spent his youth career across several French clubs before making his breakthrough at Belgian side Beveren in 2022-23, scoring 20 goals in all competitions.
The France youth international moved to Basel in 2023, where he scored 20 times in 41 appearances before joining Villarreal last summer.
Meanwhile, Kenny Tete is yet to make a final decision on where he will play his football next season.
The Dutchman, whose deal with Fulham runs out at the end of the month, has an offer on the table from Everton, who have made progress in talks.
An offer from Fulham also remains on the table though and the prospect of remaining at Craven Cottage has not been discounted by Tete and his camp.
Analysis by Thom Harris
Barry is tall, quick, and relentless in his running. Only one player across Europe's top seven leagues — Benfica's Vangelis Pavlidis — has made more runs in behind per 30 minutes of team possession in 2024-25, illustrating Barry's eagerness to attack whenever his team has the ball.
Barry is strong in the air too — only two La Liga forwards have taken more headed shots than him since he joined from Basel last summer — but there is an element of chaos to the 22-year-old's all-action game. He often opts for power over accuracy in front of goal, even taking to social media to apologise to playmaker Alex Baena after a 2-1 win over Real Valladolid for not converting all of the chances he slid his way.

When he gets it right, however, Barry is difficult to stop. This thumping volley away at Getafe highlights his ability to hold up the ball, as he scraps with full-back Juan Iglesias and barges past two more in midfield before instantly looking to stretch the defensive line. He gets on the end of Ayoze Perez's chipped pass and smashes home first time.
Por la jugada. Por la asistencia. Por el remate. Lo de @Barry29Thierno es un golazo 😮‍💨#GetafeVillarreal | #LaLigaHighlights pic.twitter.com/tlLoHD8sPM

Barry's tally of 11 goals in his first La Liga season is strong, the quantity and the variety of chances falling his way a direct result of his head-on approach.

Tottenham Hotspur Are Big Admirers Of This Crystal Palace Playmaker: Should Frank Go For Him? In a recent newsletter with Give Me Sport, respected journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are big admirers of Crystal Palace playmaker Eberechi Eze. Romano said, 'Tottenham love Eze, he's on the list for sure. But no final decision has been made yet.' Eze's Impressive Numbers At Selhurst Park Last Season The English talent enjoyed a decent run of form at the London club and managed to produce a string of impressive displays for them in the final third. Eze played in 43 matches for the Eagles last season, scoring 14 times and earning 11 assists in multiple competitions. Advertisement The 25-year-old was a decent performer in the opponent's half based on his average 3.48 shots per 90 minutes in the Premier League. However, he only kept 27% of his attempts on target. Eze distributed the ball relatively well after completing 74.2% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via Eze's current deal at Crystal Palace will expire in the summer of 2027 which could make it tough for Spurs to recruit him on the cheap this off-season. (Photo by) Should Tottenham Hotspur Boss Thomas Frank Go For Eze? Eze has got the pace to make some dangerous runs with the ball in the final third. He can shoot the ball with venom from long range and has got the eye to play some decisive passes on the offensive end of the field. Advertisement The English sensation can contribute by scoring his fair share of goals up top. However, he needs to work on improving his passing accuracy in and around the opponent's penalty area. Eze is primarily an attacking midfielder but can also fill in as a left-winger if asked to do so. We can expect Eze to add more firepower to Tottenham Hotspur boss Thomas Frank's frontline. He has what it takes to secure a regular first-team spot at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next season. At 26, Eze has his best years ahead of him which makes him a good choice for Spurs to pursue this summer. He has already proven his worth in the Premier League and won't take much time to adjust to life at the North London club. All in all, Frank should focus on going all out to acquire Eze's services ahead of the new campaign.

Real Madrid Yet To Contact 21-Goal Striker With Bargain Release Clause

Ante Budimir scored 21 goals in La Liga this season. While Real Madrid is busy in action at the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, the club continues to prepare for the 2025/26 campaign under new coach Xabi Alonso, and one of the additions that the sporting management could look to make to the roster looks likely to be in attack. Earlier this summer, El Chiringuito claimed that Osasuna forward Ante Budimir is one of five options being considered by Real Madrid, who are looking to add strength in depth in the final third. The departure of veteran Joselu meant that superstar Kylian Mbappé was virtually the only natural center-forward in the squad during his debut season. Budimir is thought to appeal, in part due to a low-cost release clause which is available for part of the summer transfer window, but Los Blancos have not consolidated their interest as of yet. 'There have been questions about Budimir, obviously,' the club's sporting director Braulio Vázquez told Cadena SER, 'but Real Madrid has not called'. What is Ante Budimir's release clause? According to the report from Cadena SER, Budimir's usual release clause of €20 million ($23.3 million) is reduced to only €8 million ($9.32 million) for European-based clubs during a part of the summer transfer window. At 33 years of age, Budimir is not a young target who would offer much resale value, but he does have a proven track record in Spain, with 78 goals in 204 games for Mallorca and Osasuna since moving to the Iberian peninsula from Italian side Crotone in early 2019. The Croatian made his debut for his national team a year after moving to Spain, in 2020, and has scored six goals in 32 appearances alongside his international side's captain, Real Madrid legend Luka Modrić. In 2024/25, only Kylian Mbappé and Robert Lewandowski, of FC Barcelona, scored more goals than Budimir, who recorded 21 goals in La Liga, 10 fewer than Mbappé and six fewer than Lewandowski. He was also ever-present for Osasuna, who narrowly missed out on qualification for European competition, as he played a part in all 38 league matches, starting 34 of them. Real Madrid's plans may have been altered somewhat by the selection choices of new coach Xabi Alonso, who has opted to give ample game time to 21-year-old attacked Gonzalo García as a striker in his first two matches. Alonso started him in the absence of Kylian Mbappé, who has suffered with illness while in the United States, and rewarded the youngster for his goal against Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal by keeping his place against Mexican side Pachuca. 'He's a striker who can be a reference point,' Alonso said as he reflected on García, who may provide a homegrown solution to the lack of options available to the new coach in his squad. García made only four first-team appearances before the Club World Cup this season, scoring a late winner against Leganés in the Copa del Rey, but did score an impressive return of 25 goals in 36 games while playing for Raúl González's Castilla side, Real Madrid's second string, in the third tier of Spanish soccer, Primera RFEF.

'A sensible signing' - Arsenal agree Norgaard deal

Arsenal have agreed a deal with Brentford to sign midfielder Christian Norgaard. Sources have indicated the Gunners have been discussing a fee worth in the region of an initial £10m, with a possible £5m in performance-related add-ons. Advertisement The move for Norgaard comes just a week before Thomas Partey's Arsenal contract expires. Ghana international Partey, 32, has been in talks over a new deal to stay at Emirates Stadium, but no agreement has been reached. BBC Sport understands Sevilla's French midfielder Lucien Agoume, 23, also featured prominently on Arsenal's list of potential targets to replace Partey. Crucially, however, it is understood manager Mikel Arteta identified Norgaard as the midfielder he wanted because he preferred a Premier League-ready player. Club-to-club discussions over the Denmark international have accelerated in the last 24 hours and a deal is now in place. Advertisement The 31-year-old, who joined Brentford from Fiorentina in 2019, will now undergo a medical before completing his move. Norgaard wasn't a long-term Arsenal target, but entered the club's radar as they sought experience in midfield ahead of Partey's potential departure. Norgaard became a key player for the Bees and captain under Thomas Frank, who left to become manager of Tottenham earlier in June. Arsenal are also set to complete the signing of Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga this week by paying his £5m release clause and are close to finalising the £51m signing of Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi. What would Norgaard bring to the Emirates? Matthew Hobbs, BBC Sport Advertisement Norgaard was linked with a reunion with former manager Thomas Frank at Tottenham earlier this summer and his record shows why he is highly regarded by the top teams. The 31-year-old has just completed his sixth successive season at the Gtech Community Stadium, including all four of the Bees' Premier League campaigns. Since his top-flight debut in 2021, Norgaard has made 201 interceptions – the most of any Premier League player during this period – while he also ranks second overall for recoveries (844) and third for tackles won (189). Not necessarily renowned for goalscoring, six goals in all competitions in 2024-25 was also the best return of his entire 14-year professional career. Advertisement While Norgaard offers his own well of experience, it would not be a like-for-like replacement for Partey should he depart. The Ghanaian offers more dynamism carrying the ball in central areas, whereas the Dane is more of a traditional six, screening for danger in front of Brentford's defence. As a result, Partey's average carrying stats comfortably surpass those of Norgaard, who is more prolific at breaking up opposition attacks. 'He can be great addition for Arsenal' Edu Rubio, former West Ham, Crystal Palace and Wolves coach Norgaard is a modern defensive-anchor player. There's no doubt he can rival Partey, or offer more options to Arteta - offering him more depth in his squad. Christian can break up play, intercept, tackle, block and win aerial duels. He can let Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice do their thing while he protects their backs. Advertisement He can also recycle the ball and play forwards effectively. In a league where there are so many transitions, a player who senses danger and has a great ability to regain the ball can be a must-have in your team. His physicality, and the fact it's been tested at the Premier League, also makes him a very sensible signing. He can be a great addition to Arsenal. He would also fit perfectly with Zubimendi, if he signed. They can even play together if Arteta opts for two holding players and one 10, instead of one anchor and two number eights. Zubimendi is more of a passer and creator. Christian is more a break-up play midfielder who can regain possession, secure possession and stop the opposition from easily breaking into the final third. I feel Arteta is making sure he will have enough strength in the midfield area to compete in all four competitions. 'The glue that holds the side together' Ian Westbrook, Brentford fan writer Advertisement Norgaard has played a vital role in almost six years at the club, making nearly 200 appearances in all competitions and being named captain in the summer of 2023. His importance to the side can be shown by the fact we failed to win any of the four Premier League games he missed last season, and had two victories in the seven in which he was absent during the last campaign. He is the glue that holds the side together in his defensive midfield role, protecting the defence, winning tackles and setting up attacks. This season he has also become a more regular goalscorer - with his six in all competitions (five in the Premier League) nearly half of his entire total of 13 for the club. We are a much weaker team without him.
