Paddy Tally vacates Derry post after one season at the helm

Paddy Tally's tenure as Derry manager has come to an end after only eight months in charge. The Tyrone native took charge for the 2025 season after Mickey Harte left his position and while they failed to win a game over the course of the campaign, they did at least show improvement in the All-Ireland round-robin stage as they pushed Armagh, Galway and Dublin hard. It is believed that Tally's backroom team was set to be freshened up ahead of the 2026 campaign, but now the county will require another new manager. A statement from Derry GAA thanked Tally for his contribution, when saying: "Paddy brought integrity and energy to the role along with a deep commitment to the players and the county. His efforts to develop the squad, build a strong team environment, and guide a group of emerging players into senior football are greatly appreciated." Equally, the now former Oak Leaf boss expressed his gratitude to those who assisted him during his time in charge. Tally said: "I want to thank my management, backroom and medical team and most importantly the players for their commitment and dedication over the past season. Thank you to Derry county baord and the staff in Owenbeg and Celtic Park for their hospitality and support. I wish the Derry senior footballers the best for the future." The Derry board added that an announcement on a replacement Derry manager will be made in due course.

Paddy Tally's stint as Derry senior football manager ends after one season

Paddy Tally's spell as Derry manager has come to an end after only eight months. Derry's troubled search for a successor to Mickey Harte last year eventually led to Tally's appointment in mid-November for what was to be a three-year term. However, after a difficult season in which Derry failed to win a single game, seeing them relegated from Division One of the National League and exit the championship at the group stages of the All-Ireland series, Tally's tenure has come to a premature end, as first reported in The Irish News. The Tyrone native was not helped by injuries to key players throughout the season and Derry appeared to have rediscovered form in the latter stages of the championship. READ MORE But Tally will not be at the helm in 2026 with Derry now beginning yet another process to find what will be a fifth senior football manager since 2023. Rory Gallagher stepped down before the Ulster final in May 2023 and was replaced on an interim basis by Ciarán Meenagh until the end of that season. Harte was handed the reins for the 2024 campaign but lasted just one year, with Tally succeeding his fellow Tyrone man ahead of the 2025 season. A return for Gallagher to the role could not be ruled out as he was the preferred option of some Derry players last year.

Paddy Tally set to leave Derry post after just one season at the helm

Paddy Tally appears to be on the brink of leaving his position as Derry senior football manager after just one season, according to reports. The Galbally native took over from fellow Tyrone man Mickey Harte last November, following Harte's own departure after only a year at the helm. Tally's appointment was the result of an extensive search by the Derry county board, with ex-manager Rory Gallagher consistently linked to the role after Tyrone quickly appointed the highly sought-after Malachy O'Rourke. Under Tally, Derry failed to win a single game, with nine defeats and two draws, but the Oak Leafers did appear to be on an upward trajectory at the end of the season. Having been relegated from Division One in the spring along with the Red Hands, Derry suffered an Ulster preliminary round defeat to Donegal and were subsequently drawn in the so-called Group of Death in the All-Ireland series. They fared well against 2024 All-Ireland champions Armagh before drawing with Galway in Celtic Park. However, a battling two-point loss to Dublin in Newry ultimately proved to be Tally's final game in charge. Although there was no suggestion that Tally was heading for the exit in the immediate aftermath of the Dublin defeat, it is understood he was keen to revamp his backroom team for 2026. That now won't be the case as Derry begin the search for what will be their third manager in as many seasons. It took them four months to appoint Tally and the sudden nature of his departure might suggest that another candidate is already lined up. Along with Gallagher, other names who were linked to the role last year were current Armagh coach and former Derry star Conleith Gilligan and his former Ballinderry teammate and Cargin boss Ronan Devlin, although the former has also been linked to the managerial vacancy in Antrim.
