Our Galaxy Z Fold 7 opens perfectly flat, but shoppers are reporting issue with demo units

A number of shoppers are reporting that Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 demo units in retail stores aren't opening completely flat. The discussion started on Reddit (spotted by Android Central), where a user posted a photo showing a Fold 7 with a noticeable bend (see below), far from the flat profile they expected to see.
'While the phones in store probably get abused a fair bit, considering how little they have been available to try out in store, this worries me a bit,' the Reddit user noted.
A few others have joined the thread, claiming they've also noticed the same issue at retail locations like Best Buy. But not everyone's had the same experience, with a couple of people also chiming in to say they've noticed no issues on the demo units they've seen.
Personally, I've used two different Galaxy Z Fold 7 units since launch, and both open completely flat. When placed on a table, there's only a negligible visible gap where the tiny hinge slightly protrudes from the frame, but no curvature like what's seen in the Reddit photo. None of my colleagues have seen any signs of the screen failing to unfold fully flat, either.
For some context, when Samsung introduced its 'zero-gap' hinge on the Galaxy Z Fold 5, it said that the fully open angle typically falls between 178.5 and 181.5 degrees. That might still apply to the Fold 7, although we'll need to confirm with the company.
The Fold 7 comes with a new, thinner, and lighter Armor FlexHinge, which, in my experience, has visibly reduced creasing. Samsung also claims it strengthens durability by distributing stress more evenly, though we don't know its official durability rating yet. For comparison, the Fold 6 is rated for over 200,000 open/close cycles.
At this point, it's unclear why some retail Fold 7 units aren't folding flat. They might just be worn out from overuse on display, or they may be defective. It's also possible that the people reporting the issue didn't fully unfold the device. It definitely doesn't look like a widespread problem at this point. We'll contact Samsung for clarification and update this article if we hear back.

AI Mode on mobile gets a live video search option, which is accessible through Google Lens. On desktop, AI Mode gets file support and a Canvas option for taking notes while researching. Google's AI Mode is gradually expanding beyond Search and recently made its way to other apps used to look up information on your phone, including Google Lens and Circle to Search. In doing so, it is also bridging the gap between Gemini and AI Mode by adding similar features to search experiences. And today, Google is officially expanding on AI Mode's capabilities, bringing features to improve output and enable collaboration. Firstly, Google is bringing a vital Gemini capability to AI Mode, where you can share a live video for more context and detailed responses. Like Gemini Live's video capabilities, you will also be able to interact with AI Mode in real-time and even interrupt it while it's speaking. Google And owing to similarities, it is called Search Live and will be accessible through Google Lens. For a few months, Search Live has been available as part of the Labs experiments in Search and will soon have a broader reach. Big upgrades to AI Mode on desktop For other new features coming to AI Mode, Google is focusing on the desktop version. AI Mode is gaining better document support on desktop, so you can upload files, including PDFs, and ask very specific questions about topics with the help of AI Mode. Google proposes this as another method students can employ to learn about topics better. Besides uploading files from your computer, you will also be able to access files directly from your Drive. Next, while picture uploads were previously limited to AI Mode on mobile, the functionality is now expanding to the desktop version as well. Google doesn't mention if it will expand video capabilities to desktop, so we will have to wait until the updated AI Mode rolls out to eligible users. Besides better input options, AI Mode gets other Gemini features, including Canvas. Similar to its utility in Gemini, Canvas appears in a dedicated panel on the side, where it can be used as a separate space where you can generate responses, take responses, and then select specific parts to edit or enhance them. Google Google says Canvas, combined with the file upload functionality we discussed above, will be a valuable aid to students or working professionals for preparing for tests or working on assignments and reports. Lastly, Google will soon make it easier to access Lens on Chrome's desktop version with a new feature in the address bar. It will add a new button, allowing you to 'Ask Google about this page.' You will also be able to expand your search directly from the webpage using a dedicated sidebar for AI Mode as seen below: Google While improved Lens utility isn't close to full-fledged agentic browsing, it signals Chrome's expected shift towards assisted web browsing in the coming months or years. These features will slowly start rolling out to users in the US. Search Live is coming this week and will be available to folks who were using it as an experimental feature in AI Mode. File uploads will be available in the coming months, while Canvas will be added to AI Mode as a Labs experiment over the next few weeks. Apple likely to launch foldable iPhone in September 2026, predicts JPMorgan
Apple could be set to release an entirely new iPhone design as part of its lineup in the second half of next year, according to JPMorgan. "With the upgrades to the iPhone 17 series to be released this fall expected to be fairly limited, investor focus has already turned to the 2026 fall launches with Apple expected to launch its first foldable iPhone as part of the iPhone 18 lineup in September 2026, featuring a book-style fold similar to Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold series," analyst Samik Chatterjee wrote on Tuesday. The new foldable iPhone is expected to feature a 7.8-inch inner display as well as a 5.5-inch outer display, the analyst said. Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7, by comparison, has an 8-inch inner screen and a 6.5-inch outer screen. Not only that, the foldable iPhone 18 may feature a crease-free inner display, seeing that the industry anticipates Samsung will introduce similar technology with its Galaxy Z Fold 8 in 2026. Chatterjee predicts that the foldable iPhone will cost $1,999 and could create a $65 billion revenue opportunity for Apple, leading to a high-single-digit earnings accretion in the medium term. He also projects that the foldable iPhone will sell low-teens million units in fiscal 2027 and increase to mid-40s by fiscal 2029. Other analysts like TF International Securities' Ming-Chi Kuo have also forecast that the iPhone maker will make a folding iPhone next year . He expects it to have "premium pricing." With Apple's anticipated entrance into the foldable iPhone space, JPMorgan's Chatterjee named electronic connector manufacturer Amphenol and specialty glass company Corning as beneficiaries, saying that their resulting gains would be "primarily driven by high content in foldable phones rather than the volume associated with it."
