Prosecutors seek trial for PSG's Achraf Hakimi over rape allegations
The Nanterre prosecutor's office confirmed to AFP that they had formally asked the investigating judge to refer the case to a criminal court. 'It is now up to the investigating magistrate to make a decision within the framework of his order,' the office stated.
Hakimi, 26, played a pivotal role in PSG's Champions League victory earlier this year, scoring in the final against Inter Milan. He was charged in March 2023 after a 24-year-old woman accused him of rape.
The accuser alleged that Hakimi arranged for her transport to his home in Boulogne-Billancourt while his family was away. She later reported the incident to police, claiming non-consensual advances. Though she initially declined to file a formal complaint, prosecutors proceeded with charges.
Hakimi's lawyer, Fanny Colin, called the prosecution's request 'incomprehensible and senseless,' maintaining his innocence and suggesting an 'attempted extortion.' The accuser's lawyer, Rachel-Flore Pardo, dismissed these claims, stating her client felt 'immense relief' at the development.
Born in Spain to Moroccan parents, Hakimi rose through Real Madrid's academy before stints at Borussia Dortmund and Inter Milan. He joined PSG in 2021 and starred in Morocco's historic 2022 World Cup run. - AFP

"I actually apologise to the players. A little while ago, I bit one of their heads off, and my son had had a bad day. I can normally separate the two things, but it does impact me when he's had a bad day. "I know that I've a short enough shelf life and need to be more present at home. I haven't been home for two months. "As much as I just think they're a great group of young men. There's other things that I need to make sure I tick off." In victory as in defeat, Schmidt is not given to hyperbolic comments about his team and he merely said that he had been impressed by how they bounced back after losing the second test, and the series, to a late try in Melbourne last week. He also gave a little insight into the thoroughness of his preparations after Saturday's match was suspended for 40 minutes due to a lightning warning in the area. That the Wallabies came out firing after the delay while the Lions were a bit flat was clearly no accident. "We had been warned that there might be lightning, so we had a little bit of a plan," Schmidt said. "We wanted to make sure that players kept moving. So we had different guys rotating onto the bikes. "We had four balls in the changing room that we've just thrown around just so they could stay connected, and the rest of the time it was really just trying to get us organised for the restart of the game. Newcastle sign goalkeeper Ramsdale on loan from Southampton
LONDON: Newcastle United have signed former Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale from Southampton on a season-long loan, the Premier League club said today. THE United States set a new world record in sealing a dominant victory in the mixed 4x100m freestyle relay at the world championships on Saturday. The US team took gold in Singapore in 3min 18.48sec, beating Australia's previous leading time of 3:18.83 set in 2023. The 'neutral athletes' team from Russia finished second in 3:19.68, with France third in 3:21.35.
