The 5 Things You Must Do Before The Recession Hits

Officially, an economic downturn is not a recession until there are two consecutive quarters of GDP shrinkage. We're halfway there.
That's how I started my previous column (5/2/25) and, given the history of U.S. economics, there's no reason to change that outlook. Indeed, there have been 50 recessions in American history, dating back to the Articles of Confederation, some mild to the point of being hardly perceptible, some devastating like the Great Recession of 2008-09 and the Covid Recession of 2020.
Recessions are natural and actually necessary. Economies expand and contract just like your heart and lungs do. The realistic question is not whether we'll have one, but when we'll have it, how severe it ill be, and what we'll be doing about it.
Some, I included, see it in the works already, as I indicate above. Others see the onset ahead, perhaps starting in Q3. But nobody doubts its impending arrival.
As I've said hundreds of times over my 28 years as an independent career coach and job market observer (including 22 years as a columnist, one step taken in advance is longer than 10 steps taken to catch up. In other words, don't wait another minute. Don't think it won't happen to you. Don't underestimate a thing. Don't expect things to work themselves out. The time for your next move is right now, no matter what your current situation is.
In baseball, the truly great players – the elites – can do all five things exceptionally well. They can hit, hit with power, run, field, and throw. They are Mays, Aaron, Mantle, Clemente, Robinson, Hodges, Henderson, Jeter, Judge, Ohtani.
In the job market, here are your five tools and what you must do:
This is the way the world sees you before they meet you, so these documents need to be absolutely top notch. When was the last time you updated them? If it's longer than six months ago, that's your bad. A lot has happened in the last year. Do you remember it all? As for seeing before meeting, Philipppa Long, a friend and retired HR executive, estimates that 95 or 96 percent of all candidates have been vetted on LinkedIn before they ever knew they were being considered. 'Your profiles may have replaced your résumé as your most important document,' says Long. Hard to argue.
The reason most candidates don't move to the next round of interviews – or to the job offer – is not that they lack interview skills; it's that they don't have good strategies – or any strategies at all, for that matter. Armed with three or four tried-and-true strategies, you'll go places. Neglect this and you better get used to your current job.
'Getting a job' is not a strategy. It's a goal or, if you don't have timelines, only a dream. And 'Sending out as many résumés as possible' is not only not a strategy; it'd a colossal waste of time. Focus, target, aim. Use a rifle, not a shotgun.
Let's unpack this. Too many people have no career plan – and never did. They're just going from one job to the next, whatever that will be. Others may have put together a plan upon graduating school or sometime since but are still working that plan. Well, if you haven't been watching the nature, pace, and scope of change over the last 20 years, now would be a good time to start. But build a flexible plan, because it's OK to have to change your plan; it's just not OK not to have one.
Contrary to popular belief, career networking is not something you should do just when you need a job. That's knee-jerk, transactional, and useless. Marty Latman, a well-known northern New Jersey-based networking guru, has always stressed, as he calls it, his 'A.B.C. approach' to the networking function: 'Always Be Connecting.' In other words, be proactive about regularly staying in touch with key people in your network. As well, advises Latman, 'Don't limit yourself to your keyboard and online networking sites. Get out to conferences, meetings, industry and occupational events, alumni gatherings, and such.' Nothing is better than a handshake, eye-to-eye contact, and a cup of coffee.

It was later revealed that Wells Fargo opened up roughly 3.5 million accounts that were not wanted or needed by customers. Advertisement In order to push Wells to fix itself, the Federal Reserve took the unusual step of placing Wells Fargo in a program where the bank could grow no larger than it was in 2018. No bank had previously been placed into such a program, known as an asset cap. The Fed required Wells to fix it culture and redo its entire risk and compliance departments in order to address its problems. Since taking over in 2019, Scharf's goal has been to convince the Federal Reserve that Wells Fargo had fixed its toxic banking practices. With the asset cap removed, the bank can now pursue more deposits, new accounts and take on additional investment banking businesses by holding additional securities on its balance sheet.

Fox News Channel beat all broadcast networks in a key metric last week as CNN had its lowest-rated week of the year. Fox News averaged 2.7 million viewers during primetime on weekdays from May 26-30, compared to 2.4 million for NBC, 2.4 million for CBS and 2.3 million for ABC. While Fox News prevailed against the trio of broadcast networks, it also obliterated CNN. Fox News averaged 1.5 million total day viewers from May 26 through June 1, compared to a dismal 308,000 for CNN. During primetime, Fox News averaged 2.3 million viewers while CNN settled for only 374,000. It was much of the same among the advertiser-coveted demographic of adults aged 25-54, as Fox News delivered 175,000 total day demo viewers and 240,000 during primetime, compared to 49,000 total day and 61,000 primetime demo viewers for CNN. CNN finished with its worst week of the year across both primetime and total day as Fox News had its highest cable news share since inauguration week. Along the way, the top 100 cable news telecasts for the week all aired on Fox News. "The Five" averaged 3.7 million total viewers and 409,000 in the critical demo to lead cable news in both categories. "Special Report with Bret Baier," "The Ingraham Angle," "Jesse Watters Primetime," "Hannity," "FOX News @ Night," "Gutfeld!," "Outnumbered," "The Will Cain Show," "America's Newsroom," "America Reports" and Harris Faulkner's "The Faulkner Focus" all had strong weeks, too, to help Fox News crush CNN. Allina Health doctors, PAs hold first-ever union picket, ask for better work-life balance in new contract

Six hundred Allina doctors, physician assistants and nurse practitioners who work in primary care are asking for a new contract with more work-life balance. They gathered in the pouring rain Tuesday morning for a first-of-its-kind protest. "We are here together as a result of many years of fighting, fighting for primary care and fighting to make things better," workers chanted. While nurses have walked the picket line for years, these picketers are doctors, PA's and nurse practitioners who are admittedly higher compensated. "We all get paid really well, its not about that. It's about having better support for our patients and support in our community and that we want a fair treatment in our contract and protections for everybody," said Dr. Chris Filetti, a pediatrician with Allina Health. WCCO The workers are asking for paid sick leave, instead of having to use vacation time. They're also asking for four hours a week to finish paperwork, instead of doing it in their off time. Additionally, they're asking for more medical assistants and nurses for support. "As a provider I hear story after story about providers who have to cut back from practice because of poor work-life balance," said Filetti. Allina's leaders say they are listening despite the unsettled contract, telling WCCO in a statement: "We continue to negotiate in good faith to reach responsible agreements that maintain competitive pay and benefits for our providers while ensuring that we can sustain our caring mission during these extremely uncertain economic times. It is important to get it right. We remain committed to reaching fair agreements that ensure we can maintain access to the high-quality care people depend on."
