This year, Ganesh Chaturthi begins on August 27 and will culminate on Anantha Chaturdashi. Also known as Vinayak Chaturthi or Vinayak Chavithi, the festival marks the worship of Lord Ganesha as the god of new beginnings and remover of obstacles. Devotees across India and abroad celebrate his wisdom and intelligence with decorated homes and pandals, prayers, music, and vibrant processions.
'This festival is deeply rooted in social, national, freedom, self-respect, and linguistic pride. It continues in the same spirit today. It is a matter of pride and honour for Maharashtra," Shelar had told the Assembly.
He emphasised that the Government of Maharashtra is committed to preserving and promoting the cultural significance and global presence of this festival. Shelar also highlighted that certain individuals, for various reasons, have attempted to challenge the traditional public celebration of Ganeshotsav in different courts.
However, the Mahayuti government–under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Dada Pawar–has acted swiftly to overcome all such restrictions and legal hurdles.

'Behave Or Face Fines': This South Korean Island Has Issued A Conduct Guide For Tourists

Jeju police issued guidelines warning foreign visitors to behave or risk fines after a surge in complaints. Police on South Korea's resort island of Jeju issued guidelines warning foreign visitors to behave or risk fines- for the first time- after a surge in complaints from residents about misbehaviour. The move comes as the island, famed for its beaches, volcanic scenery and hiking trails, experiences a sharp rebound in international tourism. Local police said the guide- printed in Chinese, English and Korean- is the first of its kind in the country and is being rolled out during the peak summer season. Authorities said the decision followed reports of foreign visitors littering, smoking in prohibited areas and even allowing children to defecate in public. The booklet lists 'minor offences" punishable by fines, including jaywalking, urinating or defecating in public, drunk and disorderly conduct, dining and dashing, using fake IDs and trespassing. 'We aim to prevent misunderstandings due to language and cultural differences and improve foreigners' understanding of Korean culture and laws," Jeju Police Agency chief Kim Su-young said as per BBC. Jeju has attracted more than seven million visitors so far this year, according to local media. In 2024, foreign tourists injected a record 9.26 trillion won into the island's economy, with nearly 70% arriving from China. The new guidelines reflect a broader push across Asia to manage overtourism and its impact on local communities. Last year, a Japanese town erected a barrier blocking a famous roadside view of Mount Fuji after large crowds flocked to take selfies. view comments First Published: August 20, 2025, 19:56 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Last Updated: Shri Sadashiva Bane (55) is a resident of Kempatti Village in Raybag taluk of Belgaum district in Karnataka. In today's fast-paced world, where finding time to spend with your parents and family could be challenging for many, the story of a modern-day Shravan Kumar has come under the spotlight. Shri Sadashiva Bane (55), a resident of Kempatti Village in Raybag taluk of Belgaum district in Karnataka, carried his mother, Sattevva Laxman Bane, aged 100 years, on his shoulders and walked 220 km to fulfil her wish to offer prayers at Pandharpur's Vitthal Temple. It is a major pilgrimage site in Maharashtra, dedicated to Lord Vitthal, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, and his consort Rukmini. Sadashiva Bane Carries Mother On His Shoulder For 220 Kms As per Sadashiv, a long-time devotee of Pandharpur Vitthal, has been walking to the temple for the past 15 years. However, he always dreamed about taking his mother on his shoulders and carrying her to Vitthal's darshan via the traditional dindi padayatra. Well, it looks like his long-time wish just came true. The story of this Modern-day Shravan Kumar was also published in a local newspaper. Recently, an X user shared a picture of the story. He wrote, 'A 55-year-old son carries his 100-year-old mother on his shoulders and does a Padayatra of 220 kms to Pandrapura Vittala darshana. Shri Sadashiva Bane had a long desire to carry his mother on his shoulder to Pandrapura. He took 9 days to go from Kempapatti Grama to Pandarpura." Man Takes Mother On 66,000 Kms Pilgrimage In a similar case, earlier, a man named Dakshinmurthy Krishna Kumar took his 73-year-old mother to a 'Matru Seva Sankalp Yatra' – a travel expedition to fulfil her bucket list on a 2001 model scooter. Krishna Kumar, 44, and his mother began their journey on January 16, 2018, and after 5 years, the mother-son duo travelled 66,000 kms and have been to almost all the major religious cities across the country, along with countries like Nepal, Bhutan, Manyamar, etc. Speaking to The Times of India, Krishna Kumar said, 'I've been on this 'Matru Seva Sankalp Yatra' since January 16, 2018, for one simple reason: my mother had been confined to four walls and a roof for her whole life, and I wanted to show her the world." view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
