Ahead of the launch, hospital operations have already begun at both sites, setting the groundwork for future academic and healthcare services.
Since taking office on July 4, 2021, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has focused heavily on strengthening the state's medical infrastructure. During his tenure, two government medical colleges have already been made operational, Almora Medical College in 2021 and Haridwar Medical College in 2024.
These institutions have added 200 MBBS seats, raising the total number of first-year medical seats in the state to 625.
Prior to these additions, government medical colleges were already functioning in Srinagar, Dehradun, and Haldwani. The government now aims to expedite the construction of the upcoming colleges in Pithoragarh and Rudrapur. According to Dr. Ashutosh Sayana, director of medical education, hospitals at both locations are already operational, and work is underway to ensure adequate staffing and infrastructure to support the upcoming medical colleges.
Progress on AIIMS Satellite and Cancer Hospital
In a major boost to tertiary healthcare, an AIIMS satellite center in Kichha was also approved during Dhami's tenure and work on it is progressing rapidly. The state has also launched its first air ambulance service through AIIMS Rishikesh, catering to emergency medical needs. Additionally, a 300-bed cancer hospital in Harrawala, Dehradun, has been completed.

Under the scheme, eligible cardholders receive free treatment up to ₹5 lakh per year for critical illnesses like heart disease, kidney disorders, cancer, and diabetes. So far, around 60 lakh Ayushman cards have been issued in the state. Beneficiaries can avail of treatment in over 30,000 reputed government and private hospitals across India.
Highlighting the government's commitment, chief minister Dhami said, 'In hilly areas, people had to travel to big cities even for minor ailments. Our aim is to create a strong healthcare network at the district and tehsil levels. New medical colleges will ensure better treatment for people and open new career opportunities for youth in the medical field.'
With a clear focus on decentralizing healthcare and expanding medical education, the Dhami government is making notable strides in transforming Uttarakhand's health landscape.

Tripura's heath-care system 'completely collapsed' under BJP government, alleges Congress
Criticising the Bharatiya Janata Party-led (BJP) government in Tripura, the Opposition Congress alleged the State's health-care system has "completely collapsed" even as Chief Minister Manik Saha is himself a doctor. Congress spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty on Saturday (August 17, 2025) alleged that instead of delivering quality health care, the State has witnessed corruption and medical negligence, leading to deaths. Major attack on Independence Day thwarted in Tripura as police arrest 2 with explosives 'Reports from both government and independent agencies have 'punctured' the much-publicised claim of a health revolution,' he claimed. 'According to a recent report by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Tripura ranked first among northeastern States in malaria and chikungunya cases in 2024-25, despite having only 44 lakh population as compared to Assam's over three crore,' Mr. Chakraborty said. Tripura CM claims incumbent BJP-led coalition government provided nearly 20,000 regular jobs 'In 2023 alone, the State recorded 22,412 malaria cases, nearly half of the Northeast's total, while chikungunya cases rose from 1,557 in 2023 to 2,452 in December 2024,' he said. Mr. Chakraborty said the report further revealed a disturbing rise in HIV cases. Between January and November 2024, 1,237 people were found to be positive out of 12,660 people tested. Alleging that corruption has been rampant in medical recruitments, he claimed that candidates scoring as low as 14-15 marks out of 100 were appointed as medical officers by the government. "The State Government is more interested in creating flashy showcases than real reforms," Mr. Chakraborty alleged, urging the Chief Minister to take concrete measures to strengthen the health-care system.

Govt to set up 1.1k Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, 166 ready
New Delhi: Delhi govt intends to set up 1,100 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, of which 166 are ready. Alongside, five major hospital expansions will be completed this month, adding 1,300 new beds, new OPDs and advanced medical equipment to the city's healthcare infrastructure. Chief minister Rekha Gupta said Delhi's hospitals were being integrated into the Hospital Information Management System (HIMS), which would allow patients to book appointments online, access digital health records and receive unique health IDs. CM said that medicine procurement would now be centralised to ensure transparency and efficiency. She said these initiatives would form the foundation for a stronger, more inclusive healthcare system in the city. Govt officials said seven ongoing hospital projects in the capital would be redeveloped as super-specialty ICU centres, each dedicated to treating specific critical conditions such as cancer, high-risk deliveries and organ transplants. However, progress had remained dodgy in most of these projects. Gupta claimed that the real asset of Delhi was its health and criticised the previous govt for what she described as "depriving Delhi residents of the benefits of the Ayushman scheme". Her govt, she said, implemented the central scheme on the very first day after taking oath. So far, 4.5 lakh people have enrolled in the scheme and started receiving treatment. Under the Vaya Vandan Yojana, 2.2 lakh citizens above the age of 70 years have been provided free treatment of up to Rs 10 lakh each, she said. To address the shortage of medical equipment in hospitals, 150 dialysis machines, 20 CT scan machines and 12 MRI machines have been newly installed, she said. "Also, medical superintendents have been appointed in 28 hospitals and 1,500 nurses have been given permanent appointments," CM says. She said Delhi govt's resolve was that every citizen of Delhi should be healthy, safe, and empowered. "The foundation we have laid in healthcare, sports and youth welfare will strengthen generations to come," she said. While seven ICU-bedded hospitals are being built in Shalimar Bagh, Kirari, Sultanpuri, Sarita Vihar, Raghubir Nagar and in the existing premises of Chacha Nehru Bal Chikitsalaya in Geeta Colony and GTB Hospital in Dilshad Garden, four other multi-specialty general hospitals are coming up in Jwalapuri, Madipur, Hastsal and Siraspur. These 11 new health facilities were taken up for construction in 2020 and 2021 after the Covid-19 outbreak. While the construction of four general hospitals started between Sept and Nov 2020, the seven ICU health facilities were sanctioned in Sept 2021.
