Majhi urges Mamata to refrain from referring Digha temple as ‘Jagannath dham'
Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, on Tuesday, wrote a letter to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressing concern over the naming of the recently inaugurated Jagannath temple at seaside town of Digha in the neighbouring State as 'Jagannath dham'. He requested the West Bengal government to refrain from referring Digha Jagannath temple as Jagannath dham.
'The Odisha government expresses its deep concern over naming of the recently established Jagannath temple at Digha, West Bengal, as 'Jagannath dham,' wrote Majhi. He also said that it is well-known that Shree Jagannath dham in Puri is one of the sacred 'Char Dhams' of Hinduism and it holds unparalleled religious, spiritual, and cultural significance, not just for the people of Odisha, but for millions of devotees across India and the world.
'The name Jagannath dham holds a unique and sacrosanct identity linked to Puri, and its usage in reference to any other temple or location hurts sentiment and emotion of millions of pilgrims, devotees, and the general public, besides diluting the distinct heritage of Shree Jagannath dham, Puri,' the Odisha Chief Minister noted.
While appreciating the devotion towards Lord Jagannath across regions in the country and outside, Majhi, however, asserted that the use of the term 'Jagannath dham' in official and promotional contexts for the Digha temple is likely to cause confusion among devotees, dilute the historical identity of Puri as the original and revered abode of the Lord, and hurt the religious sentiments of the people of Odisha.
'In view of this, I request the West Bengal government to reconsider the usage of the name 'Jagannath dham' in relation to the Jagannath temple recently established at Digha and refrain from using the term 'Jagannath dham' in its official naming, communication, and promotional materials. I sincerely hope that the West Bengal government will uphold the spirit of inter-State respect and cultural sensitivity in this matter and take necessary steps to address our concerns,' urged Majhi.
Earlier, the King of Puri, Gajapati Dibyasingha Deb, the 'Adya-sevak' or First Servitor of Lord Jagannath, on Monday, asserted that as per the sacred scriptures like Skanda Purana, Brahma Purana, Padma Purana, etc, it is only Puri which can be called as 'Shree Jagannatha dham' and not any other place or temple because it is Puri, which is the eternal Holy Abode of the Supreme Lord -- Shree Purushottama-Jagannatha.
Majhi urged the Digha Jagannath temple authorities to desist from referring to the Digha temple as 'Jagannath dham' and honour the age-old traditions and heritage of Moola-peetha Shreemandira at Puri.

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday said 'dhams' are set up on the basis of religious faith of people and not on the arrogance or ego of any person or government. Majhi was replying to a question here on the fate of his letter to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on the row over naming a temple at Digha as 'Jagannath Dham'. Without taking Banerjee's name, Majhi said, 'As dhams were established hundreds of years ago based on the faith of people, it cannot be changed by any person or a government. Adi Shankaracharya had set up four 'dhams' for Hindus and Puri's Jagannath Dham is one of them.' 'Yes, I had written a letter (requesting Banerjee to refrain from referring the Jagannath temple in Digha as 'dham') to the West Bengal Chief Minister. But she has not given a reply, but issued a statement which is not acceptable. The matter, which is based on the faith of millions of people, should be respected,' Majhi said. He said Adi Shankaracharya had established four 'dhams' in different regions of India on the religious point of view for the protection of the Hindu religion. 'Her (Banerjee) statement reflects arrogance and ego. People will give a befitting reply to the person,' Majhi said. Majhi, however, did not give any indication of the Odisha government taking legal recourse over the 'Jagannath Dham' row. Earlier, Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan had said that the Odisha government may be forced to take the matter to court if Banerjee did not withdraw the word 'dham' from the Digha Jagannath Temple.

State police see progress across units
1 2 Bhubaneswar: As the Mohan Majhi govt marks its first year in office on Thursday, the Odisha police has seen significant progress across several areas, including staff recruitment, equipment upgrades, technological improvements, training enhancement, digital forensics and counter-insurgency operations throughout the year, according to a booklet, titled '1 year many milestones' compiled by the information and public relations (I&PR) department. As per the govt booklet, at least 8,271 new posts were sanctioned in the home department to further strengthen the law and order situation in the state. According to police sources, of those 8,271 posts, at least 4176 are meant exclusively for the state police force across various police ranks. "Besides 2,500 new positions in the home guard division has been created. Additionally, 2,000 positions were established in the traffic division to handle urban traffic management across the state," the booklet read. The govt's priority to fortify the state police force was reaffirmed by the chief minister during inauguration of a new office building of the DCP here on Tuesday. "Our govt has accorded focus to strengthen Odisha police, which succeeded in maintaining law and order in the last one year. To improve the operational capabilities of police personnel, we have provided them with new vehicles and investigation kits. The current fiscal saw a further increase of 26.6%, reaching Rs 7,063 crore. Considering the state's expanding industrial activities and security requirements at various industrial centres, Majhi recently announced the formation of an additional Odisha Industrial Security Force battalion. To strengthen anti-Maoist operations, Majhi announced in Jan a substantial increase in the monthly 'risk allowance' for Special Operations Group (SOG) personnel, elevating it from Rs 8,000 to Rs 25,000. The SOG, established within Odisha Police in 2004, specialises in counter-terrorism and extremist operations. "Three new Odisha special security battalions have been raised to support anti-Maoist operations," a senior police officer said. Amid Indo-Pak tensions, govt enhanced Odisha police's readiness by establishing an anti-terrorism unit and acquiring two bulletproof armoured vehicles with light machine guns mounted on their roofs. The state police acquired advanced drones for the first time to enhance coastal security operations and counter potential maritime threats. "The govt has sanctioned about Rs 150 crore to strengthen the coastal security wing. At least 350 retired navy personnel have been engaged for coastal security. A command and control centre will soon be set up, adding teeth to our coastal security wing," the police officer said. Cybercrime investigation received priority attention during the past year. The govt announced 20 new cyber police stations while upgrading 14 existing ones. The police force underwent substantial modernisation during the last one year. Police stations received investigation equipment including laptops, smartphones, and hard disks to enhance investigative capabilities. For the first time about Rs 50 crore budget was allocated for officers' investigation expenses. "Each police station received new vehicles and motorcycles to ensure swift emergency response. Recently, 247 forensic officer positions were created to enhance the criminal justice system, in accordance with forensic evidence requirements outlined in the newly implemented criminal legislation," the senior police officer said.

A special food festival highlighting Odia cuisine is being organised with 40 stalls managed by Subhadra Shakti women's groups. "We successfully transformed our promises into reality within a year," Majhi said during the inauguration. "Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's guidance, we achieved significant milestones across various sectors," he added. Majhi highlighted key achievements, including the implementation of the farmer welfare schemes, which increased annual farm household income by Rs 30,000, and the steps to create employment opportunities for 12.90 lakh youngsters through the Utkarsh Odisha 2025 initiative, which attracted investment intents of close to Rs 17 lakh crore. "Other notable accomplishments include the implementation of the Ayushman Bharat healthcare scheme, raising the govt recruitment age limit to 42 years and reserving 11.25% of seats in higher education for SEBC category students. The govt also provided over 27,000 govt jobs during this period," he said. "We launched a decisive war against corruption," Majhi emphasised, noting that strict action was taken against corrupt officials at all levels. Speaking separately at an intellectuals' meet, Majhi highlighted his govt's achievements during its first year in office, emphasising the administration's commitment to public feedback and cultural preservation. He stressed that public opinion remains central to the govt's decision-making process. The administration announced ambitious plans to install statues of 21 prominent personalities across the state. Additionally, the govt will develop memorial museums, lecture centres and children's parks at the birthplaces of these historical figures. "We aim to transform 100-150 villages associated with these personalities into model villages," Majhi added.
