New Delhi, Aug 8 (PTI) Aadhaar face authentication has jumped over threefold to an all-time high of 19.36 crore transactions in July 2025, according to an official statement issued on Friday.
The solution has seen a consistent month-on-month growth.
Aadhaar face authentication witnessed a 22 per cent month-on-month rise in July.
'Aadhaar Face Authentication recorded an all-time high with 19.36 crore transactions in July 2025, as against 5.77 crore such transactions during the same period in the previous fiscal," the statement said.
Aadhaar Face Authentication has come under criticism from the civil rights body Internet Freedom Foundation (IFF).
IFF has expressed apprehension that Aadhaar Face Authentication may deprive people of their rights under government schemes in case there are technical glitches.
The official statement said the growth indicates its growing adoption, usage and utility for availing and providing services.
'July also recorded the highest-ever face authentication transactions in a single day – over 1.22 crore (on 1 July 2025); the previous high was recorded on 1 March 2025, when over 1.07 crore such transactions were executed," it added.
'Aadhaar face authentication has also been integrated with the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP). It is facilitating eligible beneficiaries to get their social security benefits in a secure and contactless method. Since July, 13.66 lakh beneficiaries have authenticated themselves using face authentication," according to the statement.
Aadhaar face authentication has been adopted in all 850 medical colleges and institutions under the National Medical Commission (NMC) for marking attendance.
'Aadhaar-based authentication has been playing the role of a facilitator for effective welfare delivery, and voluntarily availing various services offered by service providers. It is a catalyst for ease of living for millions of people," the statement said.
According to official data, 39.56 crore e-KYC transactions were carried out in July. PTI PRS PRS TRB BAL BAL

Karnataka high court rejects I-T appeal against Sony India Software Centre

Bengaluru: Karnataka high court has dismissed an appeal filed by the income tax (I-T) department against Sony India Software Centre Pvt Ltd, Bengaluru, in a case involving tax treatment of free assets and foreign consultancy payments. The appeal challenged a June 12, 2024 order of the I-T commissioner (appeals), Bengaluru, which had partly allowed the company's challenge to its assessment for the financial year 2016-17 (assessment year 2017-18). That order was later upheld by the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT), Bengaluru, on Dec 13, 2024. At the centre of the dispute were two additions made by the assessing officer. The first, of more than Rs 1.4 crore, concerned assets received by the company from its overseas associated enterprises without cost. The second, a disallowance of nearly Rs 9.6 lakh, related to payments made to Singapore-based JL Services and Consultancy for employee workshops, allegedly without deduction of tax at source (TDS). The assessing officer increased this to Rs 44.8 crore by adding the value of the assets and disallowing the consultancy fee. The company argued that the assets were prototypes supplied solely for testing and were not income under Section 28(iv) of the Income Tax Act. It also maintained that the payments to the Singapore firm were for independent personal services and were exempt from TDS under the India–Singapore Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA). The CIT(A) accepted both arguments. It ruled that the fixed asset addition was unwarranted as the assets were covered under an Advance Pricing Agreement and depreciation had been factored in. The I-T department contended that the workshops did involve technical services and that TDS should have been deducted under Section 195. A division bench of Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru and Justice CM Joshi rejected this view, noting there was no dispute that the free assets were returned and that the workshops were general training sessions for staff, without transfer of technical know-how. Finding no grounds to interfere, the court upheld the earlier orders and dismissed the appeal. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Tariffing India won't stop Putin: House Foreign Affairs Committee

New York/Washington, Aug 15 (PTI) Imposing tariffs on India will not stop Russian President Vladimir Putin or address Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the House Foreign Affairs Committee Democrats said on Friday. The committee's post on X came in response to a statement by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent that if 'things don't go well" between US President Donald Trump and Putin at their Alaska summit meeting, then secondary sanctions on India for purchasing Russian oil could go up. 'Tariffing India won't stop Putin. If Trump really wanted to address Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine, maybe punish Putin and give Ukraine the military aid it needs. Everything else is smoke and mirrors," the House Foreign Affairs Committee Democrats said. Bessent, in an interview to Bloomberg on Wednesday, said, 'I think everyone has been frustrated with President Putin. We expected that he would come to the table in a more fulsome way. It looks like he may be ready to negotiate." 'And we put secondary tariffs on the Indians for buying Russian oil. And I could see, if things don't go well, then sanctions or secondary tariffs could go up," he added. When asked about China, the main purchaser of Russian crude, Bessent had said he is 'not going to get ahead of the president, but the president is the best at creating leverage for himself and he will make it clear to President Putin that all options are on the table". On whether sanctions can go up or loosened, Bessent had said, 'Sanctions can go up, they can be loosened. They can have a definitive life. They can go on indefinitely." He had added that even as Trump is meeting with Putin, the Europeans 'need to join us" and need to be willing to 'put on these secondary sanctions". Bessent recalled that at the G7 meeting in Canada this year, he asked the leaders at the table whether they are willing to put a 200 per cent secondary tariff on China. 'And you know what, everybody wanted to see what kind of shoes they were wearing," he said. Trump imposed tariffs totalling 50 per cent on India, including 25 per cent for Delhi's purchases of Russian oil that will come into effect from August 27. Responding to the tariffs, the Ministry of External Affairs has said that the targeting of India is unjustified and unreasonable. 'Like any major economy, India will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security," it said.
