McNulty wins closing time trial to clinch Tour of Poland title

Gulf Today2 days ago
American Brandon McNulty won the closing time trial on Sunday to take overall victory in the Tour of Poland.
McNulty, twice the US time trial champion, completed the hilly 12.5 km time trial around the Wieliczka salt mine in southern Poland 12 seconds faster than Italian Lorenzo Milesi of Movistar.
McNulty, who rides for Tadej Pogacar's UAE Team Emirates-XRG, succeeds Jonas Vingegaard who won the seven-day race last year.
Monegasque rider Victor Langellotti of Ineos, who took the overall lead on Saturday when he edged McNulty on the final climb, was 46 seconds back and ended up fifth overall.
Another Italian, Antonio Tiberi of Bahrain Victorious, finished fourth on Sunday to climb to second overall.
'The way the course was today it was really and all-out effort on the climb and then just a matter of holding on on the descent and flat run-in,' said McNulty.
'At the split I knew I was ahead but you can never be comfortable until the finish line. I'm super happy. It's my first World Tour win in a GC.
'I didn't have the perfect start to the season, I had some illness and this is my first win of the year. Today was nice to get a win for Baroncini, who crashed out earlier in the week. We've had him in our minds since he left and we wish for him the best in his recovery,' he added.
The week began dramatically when Filippo Baroncini was involved in a heavy crash on Stage 1, forcing his withdrawal from the race. The Italian suffered multiple injuries and is currently safely back in Italy where he is expected to undergo surgery for his facial injuries and begin his recovery.
The victory of McNulty marks a successful week of stage racing for the Emirati squad, with Isaac Del Toro having claimed the overall GC at the Vuelta a Burgos in Spain on Saturday.
The result was a reward for a consistent week of racing by the Mexican, who overcame a flat tyre on stage 5 to produce a valiant ride to second over the line on Lagunas de Neila.
Once he had crossed the line on the race's final summit finish, the 21-year-old turned around and watched the clock tick by as his overall win was confirmed.
The win tally for the team continues the grow, with 72 victories on the board so far this season.

Sabalenka edges Raducanu at Cincinnati Open, Sinner passes Diallo test

World number one Aryna Sabalenka kept her Cincinnati Open title defence alive by claiming a 7-6(3) 4-6 7-6(5) victory over Emma Raducanu in a marathon third-round clash on Monday, while men's top seed Jannik Sinner overcame Canadian Gabriel Diallo. Fresh off their third-round clash at Wimbledon last month, Sabalenka and Raducanu produced another epic contest, featuring a 13-deuce game in the third set, before the 27-year-old Belarusian sealed victory in three hours and nine minutes. Sabalenka relied on her trademark powerful serve to hold firm in the key moments, winning two tiebreaks to take her tally to 18 for the season, the most by any women's singles player in the professional era. Despite the defeat, Raducanu seems to be finding her best form just in time for this month's U.S. Open at Flushing Meadows, where she triumphed in 2021. The 22-year-old Briton outscored Sabalenka in total points won, 125-123. "I'm really happy to see her healthy. I can see she's improving," Sabalenka said of Raducanu. "Happy to get through this match. I really hope tomorrow I have a day off." Sabalenka next faces Spaniard Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in the last 16. Men's defending champion Sinner reached the last 16 with a 6-2 7-6(6) victory over Diallo, stretching his winning streak on hardcourts to 23 matches. The 23-year-old four-times Grand Slam champion, whose clash with Diallo was delayed by a fire alarm before the players continued through the noise, next faces Frenchman Adrian Mannarino. "I feel like today was a very difficult day at the office," Sinner said. "He was serving very well, especially in the second set. Against big servers you always have to find the right balance at the back of the court. "Today I struggled a bit at times. But still very happy. I need these tough matches ... Getting used to very difficult situations. I'm very happy this happened before a Grand Slam. "I'm happy about today. Can I do things better? Yes. But not every day is the same. So I'm very, very happy." POWER OUTAGE Earlier, fourth seed Taylor Fritz defeated Italian Lorenzo Sonego 7-6(4) 7-5 after a power outage caused a one-hour delay. The 27-year-old American did not face a break point and capitalised on his lone break opportunity before serving out the match, sealing the win in two hours and eight minutes. Former champion Madison Keys booked her place in the last 16 with a 6-4 6-0 win over Japan's Aoi Ito, edging a tight first set before storming through the second in just 20 minutes. Next up for the Australian Open champion is Kazakh ninth seed Elena Rybakina, who recovered from a first-set wobble to battle to a 4-6 6-3 7-5 win over Belgian Elise Mertens. "In the first set I struggled a lot. I think I never did so many double faults. Something for me to learn. Happy in the end I managed to find my game. Thank you so much guys for staying so late," the 2022 Wimbledon champion said after beating Mertens. Anna Kalinskaya stunned American fifth seed and Wimbledon runner-up Amanda Anisimova 7-5 6-4 for her third win against a top-10 opponent in the season. Kalinskaya will face fellow Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova in the next round. American 13th seed Tommy Paul was knocked out by 37-year-old Mannarino, who came back from a set down to win 5-7 6-3 6-4. Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech had earlier collapsed mid-match in sweltering conditions before being forced to retire against Canadian 23rd seed Felix Auger-Aliassime, who was leading 7-6(4) 4-2.

Barcelona send warning to Spanish League title rivals with 5-0 Gamper romp

Barcelona wrapped up their preparations for the new Spanish League season with a 5-0 home win over Italian side Como to take home Joan Gamper Trophy. The club have again faced a challenging summer, with ongoing financial issues affecting player registration in the first-team squad and renovation work on Camp Nou. As a result, Sunday's traditional Joan Gamper game was played at the nearby Johan Cruyff Stadium, which has a capacity of 6,000, reports Xinhua. Those in attendance saw a first-half display from Hansi Flick's team that showed their sharpness in front of goal. Fermin Lopez opened the scoring in the 21st minute with a low shot into the bottom corner. He added a second in the 36th minute, firing into the top corner after receiving a pull-back inside the penalty area. Marcus Rashford was involved in setting up Raphinha for Barcelona's third two minutes later, battling into the area and sliding the ball across for the Brazilian to finish from close range. Raphinha then capitalised on a defensive error to win the ball in the Como area and set up Lamine Yamal for a simple tap-in two minutes before halftime. Yamal scored his second three minutes into the second half, placing a first-time shot across goal to finish off a counterattack. The fifth goal completed the scoring, with both teams making changes in the second half as the match lost intensity. Barcelona now turn their attention to the start of the league campaign. Lopez was the standout player in Barca's 5-0 win over Como in the 60th edition of the Joan Gamper Trophy. He scored both the two opening goals, one with each foot, and was the obvious choice to be named Estrella ('Star') of the game, as voted by FC Barcelona website users. Indo-Asian News Service
