Tejasvi Surya's ‘slow claps' for BBMP after its claim of pothole-free roads during TCS World 10K run
Bangalore South MP Tejasvi Surya Tuesday doubled down on his criticism of the civic infrastructure in the city, a day after the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) claimed pothole-free roads during the TCS World 10K run.
In a post on X, Surya said, 'Ok, BBMP, now that you have said, we will believe that Bengaluru roads have no potholes. They are the best roads. And, you are simply the best. Slow claps.'
Surya had earlier expressed displeasure over the condition of Bengaluru roads after taking part in the TCS 10k run Sunday. The 10-km stretch started from RSI Club on M G Road and concluded at Manekshaw Parade Ground on Cubbon Road, via Dickenson Road, Raj Bhavan, and K R Circle.
In an open letter to Deputy Chief Minister and Benglauru Development Minister D K Shivakumar and former BBMP chief commissioner Tushar Giri Nath, Surya said Sunday, 'While it was a matter of great pride to see close to 40 thousand people, including some of the world's best athletes, senior citizens, participate in the event, it was equally disappointing to witness the state of our city's roads and public infrastructure – right in the heart of the CBD. The Central Business District (CBD) roads, which are supposed to be the best roads in the city, was in an absolutely pathetic state – like the roads in the rest of the city.'
'Many runners look forward to this event for years. They train, travel and participate with excitement. What we offered them was an obstacle race instead of a world-class experience,' he said in his post.
He complained that not a single stretch of the route was free of potholes and claimed that many runners stumbled and sprained their ankles during the run.
Responding to Surya's claims, the BBMP Monday issued a clarification saying that the organisers of the run had said there were no issues with the roads. It also noted that Abhishek Pal, who broke all previous records by completing the marathon in a time of 29 minutes and 12 seconds, attributed the success to the 'good condition' of the roads.
The BBMP's executive engineer, East Division, submitted a report to the civic agency, dismissing Surya's claims as 'unfounded'.
'I was aware in advance of the 10,000-meter marathon event organized by TCS on the aforementioned date. Accordingly, I personally inspected the entire race route starting from April 21, accompanied by Claudius Saldanha, the organizer of the World's Premier 10K Run. During this inspection, minor road joints, surface cracks, and potholes along the course were identified and scheduled for repair. For your reference, I am attaching geo-stamped photographs taken during the inspection.'
The engineer added, 'Additionally, white-topping works in progress on Maingard Road, Shivajinagar, were concealed using green shade nets. Adequate lighting and other necessary safety measures were also being implemented to ensure public safety and prevent inconvenience. In view of the above, I would like to respectfully clarify that the concerns raised regarding the condition of the roads and the safety of the race appear to be unfounded.'
Meanwhile, Shivakumar, who flagged off the event, has not issued any statement on the matter.
According to the BBMP's 2024 performance report, the Pothole Fix app, launched by the civic agency, received approximately 20,235 complaints of potholes. The BBMP claims to have fixed 11,309 potholes, while 1,449 remain unaddressed. It, however, reported that 6,249 complaints about potholes were found to be false.

Bengaluru stampede: Open invitation without preparation is criminal negligence, says MP Tejasvi Surya
Bengaluru: Bangalore South MP Tejasvi Surya criticized the decision to hold an open invitation event at Chinnaswamy Stadium without logistical preparation as "criminal negligence" that culminated in the loss of 11 innocent lives. Drawing a comparison with the 2011 World Cup victory celebrations in Mumbai, Surya said despite the participation of over 15 lakh people there, no such tragedy occurred. That was because of better crowd management and planning in Mumbai, he pointed out. Surya lashed out at what he described as an "egotistical and irresponsible" attempt by the state's top leadership, including CM Siddaramiah and DCM DK Shivakumar, to get involved in RCB celebrations and "bask in undeserved glory". He alleged that despite being fully aware of the massive crowd that would gather for the event, the govt failed to make adequate safety arrangements. "It is not cricketers or fans who are to blame. The state govt, particularly the CM and DCM, orchestrated a scenario that led to this tragic stampede," Surya said. He urged the RCB franchise to show solidarity with its fanbase. "Even though there is no legal obligation, morally and humanely, the franchise should come forward to support and compensate the victims' families," Surya said.

Bengaluru South MP and BJP leader Tejasvi Surya took a sharp sarcastic dig at Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, days after 11 people died in a stampede near Chinnaswamy Stadium during the RCB victory celebration on June 4. Also Read - Chaos in Bengaluru Metro: Viral video shows fans jumping gates amid stampede frenzy. Watch Surya posted a photo of DK Shivakumar holding the IPL trophy inside Vidhana Soudha during the felicitation ceremony and took to X to mock the ruling Congress leaders. In a scathing post, Surya wrote, 'We, RCB fans, are indebted to CM Siddaramaiah and DCM DK Shivakumar for winning us the IPL after 18 years. They displayed incredible cricketing and leadership skills on the field and brought our club this long elusive glory.' Taking the sarcasm further, Surya added, 'We are also very upset about Virat Kohli, other players and the RCB Management for poor arrangement of the security measures at the program organised to honour CM & DK and their families for winning us the trophy. Good that RCB Management is arrested and police commissioner is suspended. They are primarily responsible for security in Bengaluru. Anyways, CM and DKS can now go back to Chinnaswamy Stadium to start practising for their next IPL season.' While the Congress government has maintained that the police and organisers are to blame, the BJP has alleged that the event was turned into a political spectacle without proper planning. Following the tragedy, the Karnataka government suspended several senior police officers, including Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda. Senior IPS officer Seemant Kumar Singh has now taken charge as the city's new commissioner. Defending the suspensions, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said, 'Prima facie, those who have not fulfilled their responsibility properly have been suspended.' He also accused the BJP and JD(S) of politicising the incident instead of expressing genuine concern for the victims. Meanwhile, the Bengaluru police have arrested Nikhil Sosale, the marketing head of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), in connection with the mishandling of crowd arrangements during the event.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Rs 8,600-crore franchise, offers Rs 10 lakh to each of the dead fans
Bengaluru: Conspicuous by their absence as the tragedy that killed 11 passionate fans unfolded in the city was Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) senior management. An anodyne press release with the usual "we are deeply anguished… our heartfelt condolences" was put out late Wednesday night. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Nobody — not the head of the franchise or owner of the franchise (United Spirits) or its parent Diageo — had anything to say to the stunned fanbase that had suffered such horrific deaths, injuries and trauma. This, from a team that has repeatedly acknowledged the power and support of its fanbase and called it its '12th man'. As per the Forbes report of 2022, RCB's valuation is over a billion dollars (Rs 8,600 crore at current exchange rates). On Wednesday, along with Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), it offered each of the deceased fans Rs 5 lakh. It's unclear whether it was a joint offering or otherwise. Seeing the mood shift on Thursday, it upped the figure to Rs 10 lakh or $11,627 as per Thursday's exchange rates. The current valuation of RCB will be much higher than the 2022 figure and will go up even more given Tuesday's victory. It had revenues of Rs 635 crore in FY 2023-24 and made a profit of Rs 222 crore. Netizens were furious over the paltry compensation announced by RCB and KSCA, with many demanding that each of the families be given at least Rs 1 crore. Bangalore South MP Tejasvi Surya emphasised that RCB management should "show commitment to their fans and generously support the families of those who came to cheer for them". Most IPL franchise owners are well-known in the country and are the very visible face of their teams. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now After Vijay Mallya's exit from the country and the company, being owned by a corporate, perhaps, never suited the RCB franchise better than on Wednesday when they could hide behind corporate anonymity. A few RCB players like Bengaluru boy Mayank Agarwal have expressed sincere condolences. This is not to say that the players and staff are not affected by the tragedy. Just that many expensive manhours must have been billed by RCB's PR and brand management teams to advise them to practically say nothing and do nothing till the dust is settled. However, now with FIRs being filed against both RCB and KSCA and govt ordering arrests of senior officials of both entities, the tide has turned. A comical scene unfolded on TV cameras Thursday morning. A reporter is seen chasing a bunch of men saying, "Who is a KSCA official?" and the guy in front of the group points to one behind and says, "He's the one." The guy doing the pointing was the head of RCB, who people failed to recognise!
