Meet the drag queens saving the planet, one show at a time

Let's face it: the planet is pretty much on fire. From rising sea temperatures and dying coral reefs to rapid deforestation and all manner of pollution, humanity's effects on nature have been devastating to say the least. With so much destruction happening to our natural world, it can seem nearly impossible to effect any meaningful change. But that hasn't stopped Queens for a Cause. Established in 2023, Queens for a Cause is a Tokyo-based, queer-run organisation that puts on several drag shows throughout the year featuring local and international talent. Each themed show is dedicated to a specific environmental cause, toward which QFAC donates a portion of its earnings. Whether it's saving pollinators, protecting polar ice caps or cleaning up our oceans and beaches, QFAC donates to a wide variety of organisations that dedicate themselves to helping the planet. The collective is the brainchild of Polaris, a Jill-of-all-trades with a backstory as intriguing as the drag shows she produces. The American flight attendant spent her youth working on a farm in Connecticut before studying dance in New York. While in the Big Apple, she landed internships working in the fashion closet at Allure and the accessories closet at Vogue, among other places. The travel bug eventually brought her to Japan in 2013, where she would remain for over a decade working with special needs children. As for her experience with drag, Polaris had dabbled during her time in NYC, but it wasn't until after the pandemic that she considered producing her own shows in Tokyo. Wanting to make her events stand out, she had the novel idea of combining drag with another of her many interests: environmental activism. To help bring her vision to life, Polaris recruited her close friend, veteran performer and experienced event producer Stefani St Slut. Within just a few months, Queens for a Cause was born. The group's debut show – entitled 'Global Crisis' – premiered November 2023 and raised over ¥60,000 for the Environmental Defense Fund. Since then, the group has raised over ¥1 million for nine different local and international organisations. Each show now brings in around 60-70 attendees, and numbers only continue to grow as the performers find new ways to keep audience members entertained, all while enlightening them on global issues. 'When someone like [drag performer] Meringue can tell a story about love and death while portraying a fig wasp and teaching about the importance of pollinators, you know you have something special', says Polaris regarding the popularity of the unique performances. 'The queer community is specially equipped to deal with injustice, as we experience it all our lives and it's woven into the fabric of our history,' she continues. 'Drag and simply being queer is activism in and of itself, so I think when you connect that sensibility with a cause that really affects all people, not just the gays, it creates an even bigger sense of import and connectedness. I wanted to harness the gay community's power into a direction that wasn't just about us, but about our global community as a whole.' Polaris's vision has certainly paid off. Queens for a Cause has recently attracted the attention of a big-name global NGO as a new collaborator, whose name will be revealed during the group's upcoming two-year anniversary on November 15 at Gyoen Rosso 198. The show's theme is 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle' and will welcome a dozen drag performers to strut their stuff on the stage.

This beautiful Chicago bakery was just shortlisted at the 2025 Restaurant & Bar Design Awards

We're not saying bigger is better. But in the case of Umaga Bakehouse, it doesn't hurt. At nearly 4,000 square feet, it's one of the largest Filipino bakeries in the U.S., and Aida Napoles of AGN Design turned that space into a sun-dappled, modern refuge for sweet-toothed Chicagoans. Think warm earth tones, bronze tile accents, floor-to-ceiling windows and a bespoke S-shaped wooden table that curves through the space, doubling as seating and display. Umaga has earned buzz for its Filipino staples, from fluffy ensaymada to hot pandesal, ube-infused treats and even halo-halo. Now, Napoles' work has been named to the shortlist for the 2025 Restaurant & Bar Design Awards. The Restaurant & Bar Design Awards, founded in 2008 in the U.K., sees over 14,000 entries from 100 countries judged by big names from the worlds of interior design, architecture and gastronomy. Umaga's inclusion sends a clear signal that Chicago's design-forward hospitality game is earning some serious international cred. "We're beyond thrilled to share that Umaga Bakehouse has been shortlisted for the 2025 Restaurant & Bar Design Awards in the Americas – Café category!" the Umaga team wrote on the bakeshop's Instagram page. "Endless thanks to Aida @design_agn for creating a space truly worthy of celebrating Filipino culture. Also another huge thanks to @dylan_martin_furniture for the incredible millwork and his exceptional craftsmanship. @jcoursework for sharing your beautiful artistry with us that truly honors our Filipino roots and allows everyone to be connected and proud of our heritage. We're honored to stand alongside so many incredible projects and can't wait for the awards ceremony this October in Dubai." The Restaurant & Bar Design Awards feature five categories each for the Americas, Asia, Australia & the Pacific, Europe and the Middle East & Africa, as well as 14 global categories that are not region specific. Those five categories are Cafe, Hotel, In Another Space (hospitality spaces located in anything from airports to cinemas), Standalone and Surface Interiors, which celebrates "how surfaces such as walls, ceilings and floors come together in creating a food and beverage space." Of course, reaching the shortlist is just the first step. The awards ceremony will be held later this fall in Dubai, so eyes from Miami to Manila will be watching to see if Umaga Bakehouse can take home the award. That would be a really sweet treat!

The "Oscars of fine wine" is coming to Miami this fall

Miami has never been shy about excess. So where better for the Golden Vines, the world's most exclusive three-day celebration of fine wine and rare spirits, to make its American debut? Exactly how exclusive are we talking? Tickets are $15,000 per person for the November 7–9 event. Often called "the Oscars of the fine wine world," the Golden Vines isn't just another vino festival. Think Michelin-starred dining in historic venues, intimate masterclasses with the world's most legendary producers and enough rare pours to make a seasoned sommelier's head spin. Things kick off Friday with a suite of themed sessions, including 'Iconic Women in Wine' and 'South American All Stars.' The day ends in a gala at the Alfred I. DuPont Building, where dinner is served with once-in-a-lifetime bottles like Krug, Ridge Vineyards and Graham's Port, plus a Sotheby's live auction benefiting the Gérard Basset Foundation, dedicated to funding education and mentoring programs for young people in hospitality. Saturday will take indulgence to new heights, starting with sponsor-hosted lunches that will feature producers like Château Lafite Rothschild and Dom Pérignon, with the evening dedicated to the Golden Vines Awards Gala at the Faena Forum. There, chef Kyle Connaughton (the three-Michelin-starred SingleThread) will present a mouth-watering menu paired with astonishing vintages, including Dom Pérignon 2008 Plénitude 2. The grand finale on Sunday is when that $15,000 ticket price really starts to make sense. Guests can choose from a menu of decadent adventures: Would you like to spend the afternoon sipping Champagne alongside Aaron Paul's caviar brand? Or perhaps you'd be happier boarding a private jet to the Exumas for a lunch from Chef Masayuki Komatsu of Ogawa Restaurant in Miami? You can always stay closer to home with an afternoon of rare watches and a lunch of white truffles and primo vino with Italian winery Masseto at master watchmaker F.P. Journe, or a meal with Artemis Domaines, Château Latour, and the largest collection of supercars in the U.S. Those $15,000 tickets (80-percent of which is tax-deductible, FYI) also include VIP concierge service from Knightsbridge Circle, plus a bespoke Golden Vines suitcase to take home. Rare vintages amid Michele-starred meals, caviar, a private jet to the Bahamas and a suitcase? That $15,000 is looking more and more doable.
