Google to discontinue Play gift cards and prepaid balance in Malaysia from June 15

Google will no longer offer Google Play gift cards and prepaid balance to users in Malaysia, effective June 15.
"You have until January 31 2026 to use any existing Play gift cards or prepaid Play balance, as they will expire and become unusable after this date," the company said in an announcement on Google Play.
Users with unredeemed gift cards are also urged to spend the value by purchasing apps, games, movies or e-books on the Google Play store.
If the remaining Play balance is not enough to cover the full cost of the item purchase, users can combine it with other payment methods such as via debit/credit card payment or e-wallet.
To check remaining Play balance and the amount that will expire, users can go to account, tap 'Payments and subscriptions' then tap 'Payment method'.
Google Play gift cards were first introduced in Malaysia in 2018, available in denominations of RM50, RM100, and RM200. Users can find these cards at selected convenience stores.
Prior to Malaysia, the company earlier announced that it has stopped offering Google Play gift cards in other countries including Thailand (since 2021) and Japan (since 2023). As of Feb 1, Play gift card balance have expired for users in Singapore.

Investment firm says scammers are misusing its identity
PETALING JAYA: Investment company Tower Capital Asia (TCA) has assured the public that it has no association with recent cases of scams and fake investment schemes. The Singapore-based company said its name and branding have been misused by certain unauthorised parties to carry out scams and solicit fraudulent investments. It said the matter came to its attention after a report in The Star that TCA's identity had been used for a nonexistent investment scheme in which a Sibu accountant lost RM50,000 recently. ALSO READ: Sibu accountant loses RM50,000 to online investment scam 'Our corporate identity has been misused in connection with a fraudulent investment scheme and a scam website. 'We wish to state unequivocally that TCA has no association with this website or the individuals operating it. 'Any use of our name, logo, or corporate materials in such contexts is unauthorised and misleading,' it said in a press release issued on June 6. TCA said its investigations have identified that the allegedly fake website was also used to falsely solicit personal information and investments from targets. The company urged the public and investors to verify the authenticity of any entity claiming to be affiliated with it.

Phase 2 of flood mitigation plan to benefit over 100,000 households in Miri

MIRI (June 10): The Miri River Flood Mitigation Plan Phase 2, to be tendered by the end of this year, will benefit over 100,000 households in low-lying and flood-prone areas here, said Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin. Lee, who is also minister-in-charge of the Divisional Disaster Management Committee, said the RM50 million project has completed its design stage, and the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) has submitted it for siting approval. 'Once the siting approval is obtained, DID will call for tender. Hopefully, by the end of the year, the tender can be awarded. We hope that the project can be completed within 24 months,' he told reporters after being briefed on the project by DID divisional engineer Daniel Chen here yesterday. Lee noted that Phase 2 of the project covers the Sungai Dalam catchment area, which includes Pujut Tanjong Batu, Sungai Dalam, Canada Hill, Miri Hospital, Taman Lopeng Jaya, Riam Institute of Technology, Chung San School, Miri Airport, Taman Tunku, SMK Taman Tunku and Kampung Lusut. It also encompasses the Assar Commercial Centre at Jalan Bypass Miri, Eastwood Valley Golf Club, Melia Residence and Richmond Park. 'The project primarily aims to address the issue of flooding in these areas. Taman Tunku, for instance, experienced flash floods in 2011, 2014, 2017 and 2019. Meanwhile, Pujut Tanjong Batu was hit by floods in 2014, 2018, 2019, 2021 and most recently in 2025,' said Lee. He added that during the earlier briefing, he had told DID that construction should begin in the most severely affected areas, and Riam, Pujut Padang Kerbau, Canada Hill and Taman Lopeng Baru have been identified as the main priority zones. 'This project will benefit over 100,000 households. We also hope it will at least minimise the risk of recurrent flooding in these flood-prone areas.' On a related matter, Lee said he had also requested DID to pay special attention to new development areas, ensuring that any drainage systems implemented are able to accommodate future growth. He noted that some of the current flooding problems stemmed from undersized drainage systems that were approved 10 or 20 years ago, prior to the development of surrounding areas.
