Footy star makes grovelling apology after slamming his coach on social media in move that could cost him his future at the club
Broncos forward Martin Taupau has publicly apologised to Michael Maguire and the club's leadership group after endorsing a social media post criticising the coach's intense training style.
But it might have come too late, as the veteran prop is now facing the prospect of having played his final game in Broncos colours.
Taupau drew backlash from teammates and staff after liking a post by former Wests Tigers player Elijah Taylor, who labelled Maguire's training methods physically draining and emotionally excessive.
The post, made on Instagram, claimed Maguire's approach left players exhausted before games and disrupted home life.
Taylor, who played under Maguire at the Tigers, opened up on the hardline training regimes that the coach brought to their preparation for games.
'Two, training methods. 95 per cent of the time on the field it's full contact ... and the hardest pre-season I ever did was with Michael Maguire,' he said.
'Three, time efficiency. Let's have a meeting for a meeting for a meeting.
'I'd get home from training and the kids don't know who I am anymore. [I was] hardly home.'
The criticism came amid pressure on Maguire following Brisbane's poor form, with four losses in their past five matches.
Taylor said Maguire's sessions were mostly full contact and described his pre-season as the 'hardest ever' in his career.
He added that game-day fatigue was common and called for the coach to rethink his methods to turn the Broncos' season around.
Taupau's endorsement of the post reportedly went down poorly with senior players.
He responded by posting a public apology on Thursday night.
'Today I liked a video by Elijah Taylor talking about Michael Maguire's coaching methods,' Taupau wrote.
'I regret this as it was not my intention to endorse the video. I removed the like immediately after.'
He went on to praise Maguire, saying, 'I am thoroughly enjoying being coached by Michael Maguire and will continue to do whatever I can to help the Broncos win a premiership in 2025.'
Despite the apology, Taupau has been summoned to front the club's senior leadership group, including Adam Reynolds, Pat Carrigan, Payne Haas, Ben Hunt and Kotoni Staggs.
The group will decide if further action is required ahead of Sunday's clash with the Dragons.
While sacking him is seen as unlikely, Taupau is off-contract at the end of 2025 and will not be offered a new deal.
That decision appears to have been made before this incident, with sources suggesting the club is pursuing full cultural buy-in under Maguire's leadership.
The 35-year-old joined the Broncos from Manly in 2023 and has played 33 games for the club.
This year, he has featured just once, coming off the bench in a round 6 loss to the Roosters.
He reportedly struggled with the pre-season intensity, nearly collapsing during running drills in 30-degree heat on the first day under Maguire.
Brisbane insiders say the mood has shifted, with concerns about being 'over-trained' contributing to inconsistent performances.
Maguire, who won a premiership with South Sydney in 2014, has long been known for his rigorous style.
His time at Souths and later at the Wests Tigers ended amid reports of player burnout and internal tension.
Players like Chris Grevsmuhl and Elijah Taylor have previously spoken out about Maguire's extreme standards.
Still, Maguire has his supporters within the Broncos squad.
Payne Haas, who played under Maguire in State of Origin, rubbished suggestions the coach had lost the dressing room.
'I think it's bollocks,' Haas said bluntly when asked about a possible revolt.
'We have got his back. Everyone has got belief in this group and what he does with us.'
'We support him 100 per cent.'
Maguire recently took players on a Sydney Harbour cruise as a bonding session, a move that also drew criticism.

Jockey, 50, who got knocked out in fight HE started hit with massive ban after admitting ‘anger management' issues
A LEGENDARY jockey who got knocked out in a fight HE started has been hit with a massive ban. Multiple Group 1-winning rider Noel Callow was rushed to hospital with injuries following an explosive weighing room bust-up with rival rider Kyle Wilson-Taylor. 2 2 Callow, 50, bumped into Wilson-Taylor, 25, at the scales and chased him back into the jockeys' quarters. An investigation ruled Callow made 'aggressive contact' with Wilson-Taylor from behind before the pair fell to the ground. Wilson-Taylor was then said to have mounted Callow and delivered two blows to the head at Doomben racecourse in Australia. Callow, who was concussed in the scrap, was quickly taken to hospital and immediately stood down from racing. Bosses have now given him a huge three-month ban, which will be reduced to two once he completes an anger management course. Callow, who has won more than £22million in his career, admitted in a written note to stewards he had issues with his temper. He also has to provide evidence he has been to see a sports psychologist before being allowed to race again. In a brilliant blow-by-blow account of how the fight went down, the stewards' report read: "Following the running of race six at Doomben on Wednesday 28 May 2025, both Mr Wilson-Taylor and Mr Callow presented to steward Simon Fletcher to weigh in for their respective rides in race six. "Mr Wilson-Taylor proceeded to the scales to weigh in with Mr Callow positioned behind him awaiting his turn to weigh in. "Mr Callow then positioned himself in close proximity to Mr Wilson-Taylor that then resulted in Mr Wilson-Taylor making contact with Mr Callow in order to exit the scales. "Mr Wilson-Taylor has then made the comment 'I'm not scared of you' to Mr Callow. "Mr Callow then proceeded to weigh in as Mr Wilson-Taylor then proceeded into the male jockeys' room. "Upon completing being weighed in, Mr Callow has then proceeded to run into the male jockeys' room in pursuit of Mr Wilson-Taylor. "Mr Callow has then made aggressive contact to Mr Wilson-Taylor from behind resulting in a physical altercation ensuing between Mr Callow and Mr Wilson-Taylor resulting in both Mr Callow and Mr Wilson-Taylor falling to the ground. "Shortly after falling onto the ground Mr Wilson-Taylor has then struck Mr Callow twice to the head whilst positioned on top of Mr Callow before other riders, along with steward Mr Fletcher, have then been able to separate Mr Callow and Mr Wilson-Taylor. "As quickly as the exchange escalated, it de-escalated and was finished. It might have taken 15 or 20 seconds. "This was not an incident thought out and planned beforehand. It was a momentary loss of temper, and any penalty should reflect that. "There was initiation of the altercation by Callow but that must be weighed against his subsequent restraint, his co-operation during the inquiry, early guilty plea, and steps taken toward rehabilitation. "The conduct was out of character with Callow's conduct over recent times and is unlikely to be repeated. "He has shown insight by taking steps in seeking assistance with anger management. "He has apologised in writing by his letter dated 31 May 2025." Commercial content notice: Taking one of the offers featured in this article may result in a payment to The Sun. Top Channel Nine star gets a VERY surprising job with NRL team that has raised serious concerns
A Channel 9 superstar's proposed deal to join up with the Perth Bears has raised alarm bells among some NRL chiefs over the potential for a conflict. James Bracey is now a front-runner to be the latest television personality to hold a position of power within an NRL club, with the broadcaster set to join up as a board member with the Perth Bears. Bracey, 40, is a massive Bears fan and is, according to The Daily Telegraph, expected to take up one of seven spots available on the newly incorporated NRL club's board. But there is a small hitch. There is some concern from the NRL that his board-level involvement with the club could prove to be a conflict of interest, the outlet claims. Following the announcement that the Bears would finally enter the league in the 2027 premiership season, the NRL has been working through issues relating to the involvement of members of the media in the club. That is particularly in relation to Seven West Media, whose publication, The West Australian, has notably been critical of the move in the past. NRL great Andrew Voss fumed at a recent front page from the outlet after the Bears were confirmed as the 18th side to enter the NRL. The front page showed a picture of a bear snarling, with the headline: 'The Bad News Bears'. A subheading read: 'Rugby mad Roger Cook forces WA taxpayers to pay Sydney NRL rejects $65m to play in Perth'. The story itself blasted the move, criticised financial projections and picked holes in the plan to situate a new NRL side in Perth. It claimed that revenue predictions were wrong, adding that the ARLC claimed the team would bring in $52million, but further investigations show that figure to be more in the region of $28. Voss branded it 'clickbait'. That came after Anthony De Ceglie, who is the former editor-in-chief at The West Australian, was appointed as the Bears chief executive. Seven were instructed, according to The Daily Telegraph, not to include De Ceglie in their broadcast coverage of Mal Meninga's appointment. The outlet adds that Bracey's inclusion could put a strain on tensions between Seven Chiefs and the NRL. 'I would love to be a part of [the Bears],' Bracey told 100 per cent footy in May. 'I've been there with the pom poms since I was a kid. But he remained coy on what role he could take with the new footy club.
