Evading detection as a member of the banned RSS during Emergency, Modi travelled in disguises - in one instance as a "swamiji" to visit a jail to speak to incarcerated activists. He was there for nearly an hour, according to the book, released at an event to mark 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' by home minister Amit Shah.
In the book, RSS volunteer Hasmukh Patel talked about Modi's keen mind for innovative outreaches, noting that he suggested placing anti-Emergency literature in barber shops where people from different walks of life gathered, and with religious leaders as followers came to listen to them.
"He not only ensured regular publication of anti-Emergency literature, but also took on the perilous responsibility of distributing it throughout Gujarat.

New Delhi: As Opposition parties sharpened their attack on the government over the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill — branding it 'unconstitutional" with "potential for misuse against political opponents", Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy on Thursday asserted that the government was determined to pass the legislation and 'make it an Act.' The Opposition has alleged that the ruling BJP intends to misuse central agencies, frame non-BJP Chief Ministers, send them to jail, and destabilise elected state governments. However, the Union government has defended the Bill, arguing that it aims to 'elevate declining moral standards' and uphold integrity in politics. The amendment empowers Governors of states and Lieutenant Governors of Union Territories to sack a Chief Minister or minister if they remain in jail for 30 days, even without conviction. Speaking to IANS, G Kishan Reddy said, 'The Bill presented will now go to the Joint Parliamentary Committee. We will make this Bill into an Act after seeking suggestions from wise people across the country, including constitutional experts, legal experts, and political leaders. Yesterday, Amit Shah presented it in the Lok Sabha, and today, he will place it before the Rajya Sabha. "However, I want to ask the Congress — what is your problem? You govern only three states. The Prime Minister is ours; we are in power in many states. If anyone should worry, it should be us. Yet, guided by ethics, we have brought this Bill.' Recalling the past, Reddy pointed to the Congress' handling of the Lalu Prasad Yadav case. 'When Lalu Yadav was facing resignation as Bihar CM, the Congress passed an Ordinance to save him. At that time, Rahul Gandhi tore it up in public. Now we will pass this Bill and make it an Act. We are committed to bringing ethics and maintaining integrity in politics,' he said. On Wednesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced three pivotal Bills in the Lok Sabha, including the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025. The proposed legislation mandates the removal of Prime Ministers, Chief Ministers, and Union Ministers if arrested and detained for 30 consecutive days on charges carrying a punishment of five years or more, even without conviction. Alongside this, the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025 and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025 were also tabled. All three were referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee following a voice vote. The Constitution Amendment Bill specifically seeks to amend Articles 75, 164, and 239AA of the Constitution, creating a clear legal mechanism for removal. As per its provisions, the President will remove the Prime Minister, Governors will remove state Chief Ministers, and Lieutenant Governors will remove Chief Ministers of Union Territories. If no resignation or removal order is issued by the 31st day of custody, the office will automatically fall vacant on the 31st day. However, reappointment will be permitted once the leader is released. The Lok Sabha was adjourned soon after the Bills were referred to the committee, with heated exchanges continuing across the political spectrum.

Ahead of Bengal visit, PM Modi says Centre committed to development of Kolkata
Kolkata: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to inaugurate three new metro services in Kolkata on Friday and take a metro ride from Jessore Road Metro station to Jai Hind Bimanbandar (Airport) Metro station. The Prime Minister is also scheduled to attend a government programme in this regard, along with a public meeting in Dum Dum Central Jail Ground. Taking to his X account, PM Modi on Thursday said, "It is always a delight to be among the people of Kolkata, a city whose development we are greatly committed to. Tomorrow's programmes in the city are mainly focussed on connectivity. The metro services, which will be flagged off, include Noapara–Jai Hind Bimanbandar, Sealdah–Esplanade and Beleghata–Hemanta Mukhopadhyay routes. Connectivity to and from the airport as well as the IT hub areas will be enhanced." PM Modi also said that public anger against the Trinamool Congress-led Bengal government is increasing with each passing day. "I am eager to be among @BJP4Bengal Karyakartas at a rally in Kolkata. With each passing day, public anger against the TMC is increasing. West Bengal is eagerly looking towards the BJP with hope because of our development agenda," he said in an X post. This will be the second time the Prime Minister will take a metro ride in Kolkata. In March 2024, PM Modi had inaugurated the country's first underwater metro in Kolkata and took the first ride under Hooghly river. On Friday, PM Modi will inaugurate and lay the foundation of projects worth Rs 5,200 crore, including three new stretches of the Kolkata Metro, and an elevated corridor in adjacent Howrah. According to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office, Prime Minister Modi will visit the Jessore Road Metro Station, where he will flag off the Noapara-Jai Hind Bimanbandar metro service from Jessore Road. In addition, through video conferencing, he will also flag off the Sealdah-Esplanade metro service and the Beleghata-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay metro service. He will also undertake a metro ride from Jessore Road Metro Station to Jai Hind Bimanbandar and back. At the public event, the Prime Minister will inaugurate these metro sections and a newly constructed subway at Howrah Metro Station. The Noapara-Jai Hind Bimanbandar metro service will significantly improve the access to the airport. The Sealdah-Esplanade metro will reduce the travel time between the two points from nearly 40 minutes to only 11 minutes. The Beleghata-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay metro section will play a crucial role in enhancing connectivity with the IT hub. These metro routes will connect some of Kolkata's busiest areas, bring a reduction in travel time, and strengthen multimodal connectivity, benefiting lakhs of daily commuters. In a major boost to road infrastructure in the region, the Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone of 7.2-km-long six-lane elevated Kona Expressway worth more than Rs 1,200 crore. It will enhance connectivity between Howrah, surrounding rural areas and Kolkata, saving hours of travel time and giving significant boost to trade, commerce, and tourism in the region. He will also address the gathering on the occasion.

Rajya Sabha approves motion for reference of 3 bills to Joint Committee
Synopsis Amidst disruptions, the Rajya Sabha approved a motion to send three bills to a Joint Committee for review. These bills propose amendments to the Constitution of India, the Government of Union Territories Act, 1963, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019. The Joint Committee, comprising members from both houses, is expected to submit its report during the Winter Session. ANI The Rajya Sabha on Thursday approved a motion for reference of three bills, including for the removal of prime minister, chief ministers and ministers arrested on serious criminal charges for 30 days, to a Joint Committee. The 'Motion for reference of Bills to Joint Committee' was moved by Home Minister Amit Shah amid din in the House. The three bills pertain to amendment of Constitution of India; the Government of Union Territories Act, 1963; and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019. The motion regarding nomination of 10 members to serve on the Joint Committee to scrutinise the bills was approved by the Upper House amid din. Shah had introduced the three bills in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. The Lower House had also passed a resolution to refer the bills to a Joint Committee of Parliament comprising 21 members from the Lok Sabha and 10 from the Rajya Sabha. The committee has been mandated to submit its report to the House in the Winter Session, which is likely to be convened in third week of November.
