Swamiji to sardarji: When PM Modi disguised himself to evade arrest during Emergency

Time of India6 hours ago

NEW DELHI: Covert activities, innovative tactics and code words for secret meetings like 'Chandan ka Karyakram' - the unconventional methods used by a young RSS pracharak, and now PM, during Emergency had left many surprised, even authorities.
'The Emergency Diaries - Years that Forged a Leader', published by BlueKraft, chronicles Modi's role after speaking to several people associated with him at that time.
Evading detection as a member of the banned RSS during Emergency, Modi travelled in disguises - in one instance as a "swamiji" to visit a jail to speak to incarcerated activists. He was there for nearly an hour, according to the book, released at an event to mark 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' by home minister Amit Shah.
In the book, RSS volunteer Hasmukh Patel talked about Modi's keen mind for innovative outreaches, noting that he suggested placing anti-Emergency literature in barber shops where people from different walks of life gathered, and with religious leaders as followers came to listen to them.
"He not only ensured regular publication of anti-Emergency literature, but also took on the perilous responsibility of distributing it throughout Gujarat.

His 'sardarji' disguise was so convincing even his close acquaintances failed to recognise him," the book said.
Long-time RSS volunteer Nagar Bhai Chavda said Sangh members often organised meetings and called them 'Chandan ka Karyakram'. Modi introduced them to these terms, he said, adding that the young pracharak carefully selected houses where they met. For example, during Emergency, Modi would only stay in houses with two or more exits.

Congress Fury Over BJP's "Indira Gandhi Equals Hitler" Emergency Shocker

New Delhi: Karnataka Congress leader S Manohar, the General Secretary of the party's state unit, has filed a police case against the Bharatiya Janata Party after an outrageous social media post about former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and the Emergency imposed by her government from 1975 to 1977. The BJP's post, shared on X, featured an AI-generated video of Indira Gandhi but with a toothbrush moustache, a style now indelibly associated with Adolf Hitler. The 37-second video begins with the AI-Indira Gandhi stating 'I declare Emergency and take the country under my control'. The AI narrator then proclaims June 25, the day the Emergency notification was issued, as 'the night India lost its voice (and) democracy (was) buried'. "... fear ruled the streets, the press was silenced and leaders were jailed... freedom was stolen and curfews were forced... a nation watched helpless'. 'For 21 months, darkness reigned. This was our warning. Never forget, never again.' The video was posted with the note: "INDIRA DOES NOT EQUAL INDIA, INDIRA EQUALS HITLER". INDIRA = INDIA❌ INDIRA = HITLER ✅ — BJP Karnataka (@BJP4Karnataka) June 26, 2025 The Congress leader's FIR has condemned the BJP's post as disrespectful not only towards Indira Gandhi but also meant to provoke hatred between different religious gourps and communities. Mr Manohar has demanded legal action against the BJP's social media handle. 'Suspended Democracy' The BJP's main X handle posted a similar video, calling the Emergency a "Hitlerian vestige... in a saree." Another AI-generated effort, the 12-second clip showed Mrs Gandhi in a saree at a podium. As the clip plays Mrs Gandhi shadow morphs into that of Hitler and the background turns dark red. Indira's Emergency was no accident — it was Hitlerian vestige of the past, dressed in a saree. #SamvidhanHatyaDiwas — BJP (@BJP4India) June 25, 2025 Every year since the BJP came to power at the centre - riding on the back of a 'Congress-mukt Bharat' plan - the Emergency has been a flashpoint between it and the opposition party, with the BJP maximising its attacks to counter the Congress' criticism about subversion of the Constitution. That the BJP plans on changing the Constitution to remove, among other things, India's secular nature, was a key issue raised by the opposition while campainging for the 2024 Lok Sabha election. Last year Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the BJP's charge. " Dark days of the Emergency remind us of how the Congress subverted basic freedoms and trampled over the Constitution of India, which every Indian respects greatly," the Prime Minister had said on X. "To cling on to power, the Congress disregarded every democratic principle and made the nation a jail... those who imposed Emergency have no right to profess love for the Constitution." This year too Mr Modi and senior BJP leaders, including Home Minister Amit Shah, launched fierce attacks on the Congress. The Emergency that enforced by a "despotic ruler" was one of the darkest chapters in India's history, Mr Shah said, while BJP chief JP Nadda hailed the PM's contributions. The Congress, meanwhile, as it does every year, has pointed out that while the Emergency was a distressing period, the country has moved on and there are issues to be addressed today. "The PM's sudden interest in the Constitution is only to counter our campaign to protect it. Those who never contributed to the freedom struggle or making of the Constitution are now claiming to defend it," party boss Mallikarjun Kharge said.

Andhra Pradesh lacks fiscal discipline, picks debts through NCDs at higher interest rate: Ex-CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy

VIJAYAWADA: Former chief minister and YSRCP supremo YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has charged that the state government's lack of fiscal discipline and disregard for the constitutional framework has pushed the state into big trouble. He said that the APMDC NCDs (bonds) were issued at a coupon (interest) rate as high as 9.30%, which is 2.60% higher than the prevailing SDL rate. In a social media post tagging union finance minister Nirmala Sitaraman and other PMO, Jagan Mohan Reddy alleged that they have learnt that APMDC concluded the second tranche of its NCD (bond) issuance at a coupon (interest) rate of 9.30% and raised Rs. 5,526 crores, taking the aggregate value of the issuance to Rs. 9,000 crores on Wednesday (June, 25). 'The govt went ahead with the issuance of NCDs despite the matter being admitted by the AP High Court and notices served. It is quite apparent that the proceeds of the issuance would be utilized for financing government revenue expenditure,' said Jagan. He explained that the TDP alliance government, granted private parties access to the consolidated fund of the state through RBI direct debit mandate, owing to which, private parties can access the state exchequer and withdraw funds without any requirement of any action from the state government officials. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Perdagangkan CFD Emas dengan Broker Tepercaya IC Markets Mendaftar Undo He said that it was a blatant violation of articles, 203, 204 and 293(1) of the Constitution of India. In a manner unheard of, the govt also mortgaged mineral wealth worth Rs. 1,91,000 crores for NCD (bond) issuances of aggregate value Rs. 9,000 crores. He said that with permission to access state consolidated fund and mortgage of govt property of disproportionately huge value, one would imagine that these bonds are even more secure than the SDLs (State Development Loans) issued by the state government. He alleged that the additional yearly burden on the APMDC is to the tune of Rs. 235 crores, owing to the high interest rate and the term of NCDs is understood to be 10 years. With NCD issuance, the total budget and off-budget borrowings availed and secured in this 13-month period by the TDP alliance govt exceeded 50% of what was borrowed by previous govt over a 5-year period.
