'Can't Sail Today On Yesterday's Wind': Erik Ten Hag Urges Patience Amid Bayer Leverkusen Rebuild
Bayer Leverkusen manager Erik Ten Hag, who took over the reins of the Bundesliga side following the departure of former gaffer Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid, eyes a steady rebuild at the German outfit with long-term success the main agenda.
Ten Hag, who was sacked from his previous role as the head coach of Premier League side Manchester United, called for time as he begins his rehabilitation process of the team that has been picked apart with the departures of star names including Florian Wirtz, Granit Xhaka, Jonathan Tah, Jeremie Frimpong and Lukas Hradecky over the summer.
Leverkusen clinched the 2023/24 Bundesliga title unbeaten under the stewardship of Alonso, but Ten Hag, reiterated the fact that no side can afford to rest on its previous laurels.
'You can't sail today on the wind from yesterday," the 55-year-old said.
'No one is Harry Potter, building a team so quickly and being successful at the same time. That's not how top-level football works," he explained.
Ten Hag opened his tenue at the head of the side with a 4-0 win over Grossaspach in the German Cup fixture between the sides despite some early jitters.
'You can see that not all the processes are working yet. It takes time," the Dutchman added.
Leverkusen have managed to rope in the likes of Jarell Quansah, Malik Tillman and Ernest Poku in order to strengthen their side ahead of the season, with a few more incoming transfers lined up before the window slams shut.
German icon Jurgen Klinsmann backed the Dutchman to deliver results at the helm of the club; however, he called for a more moderate expectation to start off with.
'Leverkusen have to redefine their goals, because you cannot expect them to win the championship now," the legendary striker added.
'The goal will be getting to a Champions League spot and maybe winning the German Cup, and doing well in Europe as well," he added.
'Erik absolutely has the knowledge, the charisma and the capabilities to do really well," Klinsmann said.

Leeds sign Noah Okafor from AC Milan as Premier League spending hits record £2.37bn
New Delhi: English football club Leeds United have bolstered their squad with the signing of Switzerland striker Noah Okafor from AC Milan in an £18m deal, taking the overall Premier League spending this summer to a record-breaking £2.37bn. The 25-year-old forward has signed a four-year contract at Elland Road and becomes Leeds' ninth new addition of the window, following their return to the Premier League after clinching promotion from the Championship. 'As a kid, I dreamed of playing in the Premier League. That's why for me it was quite an easy decision,' said Okafor after completing the move. 'My football suits the Premier League, so this is like a dream come true. I can't wait to step on the field. I heard that the Premier League is the best league in the world. It's so intense. I have loads of friends who played there. I'm really, really excited.' Okafor began his career at Basel, where he scored 25 goals in 71 Swiss league appearances, before moving to RB Salzburg and later joining AC Milan in 2023. In Milan, he found regular starts hard to come by, scoring seven goals in 54 games, with most of his appearances coming from the bench. His most recent Serie A strike came on the opening day of last season, before he spent the second half of the campaign on loan at Napoli, featuring in four cameo appearances. Okafor's arrival at Elland Road contributes to the highest-ever Premier League summer spending total, surpassing the previous record of £2.36bn set in 2023, according to Six clubs have already smashed their individual transfer records this summer. Brentford secured Burkina Faso forward Dango Ouattara from Bournemouth in a deal worth up to £42.5m, while Bournemouth invested £34.6m in French centre-back Bafodé Diakité. Burnley and Sunderland splashed £25m and £26m respectively for French midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu and Senegal's Habib Diarra, with the latter's deal potentially reaching £30m with add-ons. Nottingham Forest also broke their record twice, signing Switzerland winger Dan Ndoye from Bologna before completing a £37.5m move for Omari Hutchison from Ipswich. The biggest deal of the summer so far was by Liverpool, who made headlines by signing German star Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for £100m plus £16m in add-ons. Should those add-ons be triggered, Wirtz's move will set a new British transfer record, eclipsing the £107m Chelsea paid Benfica for Enzo Fernandez in 2023. With ten days still remaining in the transfer window, the £2.37bn figure is expected to climb even higher,

Heena takes sole lead in WPGT
Last Updated: Bengaluru, Aug 21 (PTI) Rookie Heena Kang dropped a crucial double bogey right at the end of the round but still managed to keep her nose ahead by one stroke in the 11th leg of the Hero Women's Pro Golf Tour here on Thursday. Heena shot a second straight round of even par 72 and was one shot clear of Jasmine Shekar (75-70). Amateur Lavanya Gupta added a second-round score of 72 after a 74 in the first round and was third, while three players — Agrima Manral (78-70), Ananya Datar (75-73) and amateur Mannat Brar (72-76) — are all at 4-over 148. Heena, who had a share of the first-round lead with 72, birdied the third but gave up that shot on the Par-4 seventh and turned in even par. Back-to-back birdies on the 11th and 12th took her to 2-under, followed by a bogey-birdie on the 15th and the 16th to stay at 2-under. A closing double set her back to even par, but she was still in the lead. Jasmine had four birdies against two bogeys to shoot the day's equal best of 2-under 70. There were two other cards of 70 from Agrima Manral and Ridhima Dilawari, who improved from 82 in the first round to 70 in the second. No Sanju Samson & Rinku Singh! Rahane Predicts India's Playing XI For Asia Cup
Last Updated: India will open their Asia Cup 2025 campaign on September 10 against UAE in Dubai and then take on arch-rivals Pakistan at the same venue on September 14. Senior India batter Ajinkya Rahane has predicted India's playing XI for the 2025 edition of the Asia Cup, which is set to be played in T20I format this year. The Asia Cup matches are set to take place in Dubai and Abu Dhabi from September 9 to 28 between eight teams. The Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI's senior men's selection committee announced India's 15-member squad for the Asia Cup on Tuesday, August 19, and included Shubman Gill as vice-captain. The right-handed batter from Punjab last played a T20I match for India on July 30, 2024, against Sri Lanka. Gill's inclusion in the squad as vice-captain is an indication that he will feature in the playing XI. Rahane, who has also played 20 T20Is for India, also feels the same and said even though he would like to see Sanju Samson as one of the openers, he is sure that the Indian Test captain will open with Abhishek Sharma, who is the world No. 1 T20I batter at present times. 'Shubman is back in the team; I'm sure he is most likely to open with Abhishek Sharma. Personally, I would like to see Sanju Samson in the team because he has done really well. Very confident guy, very good team man. I feel that is a very important thing," Rahane said on his YouTube channel. 'Sanju is a great team man, but that's a very good problem to have for the team management. In my opinion, probably Sanju Samson will sit out, though as I said, I would like him to play and be in the playing XI. But Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma will open the innings for the team," he added. In the team picked for the Asia Cup 2025, Jasprit Bumrah is also included along with left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh and spinner Kuldeep Yadav. Rahane is excited to see Bumrah and Arshdeep operating together for the Indian team. 'I'm really excited to see Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh bowling together in this Asia Cup. We don't want to talk too much about Jasprit Bumrah. We all know how dangerous he is. Arshdeep Singh, a very confident guy, swings the ball both ways. He can bowl straight and wide yorkers as well," said Rahane. 'The 11th player will depend on the wicket because we are playing in Dubai. Depending on the wicket and conditions, either Varun Chakaravarthy or Harshit Rana," he added. Ajinkya Rahane's playing XI for India in the Asia Cup 2025: Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav (C), Hardik Pandya, Jitesh Sharma (WK), Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy/Harshit Rana. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
