Film policy will ensure gender equality, says minister
Culture Minister Saji Cherian said the state policy will ensure complete safety and gender equality for men and women working at shooting locations, and addresss the issues of junior artists' regarding wages, working hours and basic facilities.
'Since cinema is a form of employment, labour laws are applicable to everyone in the industry. The government will ensure job security for all in the film field. It will roll out e-ticketing in theatres this year, and has allocated Rs 5 crore for implementation,' Cherian said while presenting his report.
He said the policy will not just address cinema, but also include television. 'A reworked version of the POSH Act for the film industry was released as a booklet during the conclave. We have taken two or three meaningful steps to secure a better future for Malayalam cinema. There is still a long way to go,' he said.
The film policy will ensure independent films are screened at least once in government theatres. The state will explore ways to offer subsidies to such films. Permissions for film shoots will be streamlined via a single-window clearance system.

Urvashi Rautela Questions National Award Jury For Ullozhukku: 'It's Not A Pension...'
Last Updated: At 56, Urvashi won Best Supporting Actress at the 71st National Film Awards for Ullozhukku but questioned the jury's decision, urging transparency as she played a central role. At 56, veteran actor Urvashi clinched the Best Supporting Actress award at the 71st National Film Awards for her performance as Leelamma in Ullozhukku, directed by Christo Tomy. While the honour adds another feather to her cap, Urvashi has publicly questioned the jury's decision-making process, specifically why she was recognised as a supporting actor despite playing a central role in the film alongside Parvathy Thiruvothu. In an interview with Manorama News, Urvashi didn't shy away from expressing her concerns. 'Is there any standard scale for acting? Or is it that after a certain age, this is all you'll get?" she asked pointedly. She went on to say, 'This is not pension money to be silently accepted. How are these decisions made? What criteria is followed?" The actress recalled a similar experience from 2006 when she won the Best Supporting Actress award for Achuvinte Amma, a film in which she also played the lead role. 'There were politics even then," she said, noting that she has always chosen meaningful roles over lobbying. Urvashi added that both she and Parvathy had been submitted in the Best Actress category for Ullozhukku, further questioning the jury's final verdict. 'These awards should make the recipient proud instead of being handed over with no explanation," she said. The actor has also urged Union Minister Suresh Gopi to look into the selection process and support greater transparency, especially for Malayalam cinema. Ullozhukku is a 2024 Malayalam drama film written and directed by Christo Tomy. Featuring powerhouse performers Urvashi and Parvathy Thiruvothu in lead roles, the film also includes Arjun Radhakrishnan, Alencier Ley Lopez, Prashanth Murali, and Jaya Kurup in pivotal supporting parts. Recognised for its compelling storytelling, Ullozhukku was officially selected for the International Competition: Fiction category at the 2nd Eikhoigi Imphal International Film Festival, held in 2025. While Ullozhukku won Best Malayalam Film, 2018 was awarded Best Production Design and Pookkaalam bagged Best Editing at this year's National Awards. Vijayaraghavan took home Best Supporting Actor. However, notable omissions like Prithviraj Sukumaran's performance in Aadujeevitham – The Goat Life led to growing discontent. Even Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan criticised the jury's decision to honour The Kerala Story. Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. The film, starring newcomers Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, is continuing its dream run at the box office. Despite new releases like Ajay Devgn's Son of Sardaar 2 and Triptii Dimri and Sidhant Chaturvedi's Dhadak 2, the film shows no signs of slowing down. Saiyaara continued the upward trend and earned Rs 8 crore on its seventeenth day, according to early figures by industry tracker Sacnilk. This takes the film's total domestic collection to an impressive Rs 299.75 crore. The romantic drama clocked an overall Hindi occupancy of 39.10 percent on Sunday, August 3. Saiyaara's Plot and Cast The romantic film revolves around a bold, determined and struggling musician (played by Ahaan) and a fiercely passionate journalist and a gifted composer (played by Aneet). Saiyaara follows the emotional journey of the two and how their love is tested by life's challenges in the signature Mohit Suri style. Based on the 2004 Korean classic A Moment to Remember, Mohit Suri's film explores themes of loss, selflessness and enduring love. Penned by Rohan Shankar and Sankalp Sadanah, Saiyaara also features strong supporting performances by Geeta Agrawal Sharma, Sid Makkar, Shaad Randhawa, Rajesh Kumar and Varun Badola. The film also marks the maiden collaboration between filmmaker Mohit Suri and iconic production house Yash Raj Films.
