Chattanooga tops Loyola Chicago 80-73, will play UC Irvine in NIT championship game

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Trey Bonham scored 23 points and Honor Huff hit a big 3-pointer late to lead Chattanooga to an 80-73 victory over Loyola Chicago in an NIT semifinal at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Tuesday night.
The Mocs (28-9) will play UC Irvine in the championship game on Thursday. The Anteaters (32-6) set a school record for wins in a season after beating North Texas 69-67 in an earlier semifinal.
Chattanooga trailed 38-34 at the half but rallied to take a 67-57 lead on a Collin Mulholland layup with 7:33 remaining.
Loyola Chicago whittled away until Des Watson hit a 3-pointer to get the Ramblers within 74-73 with 2:37 left. Huff answered with a 3-pointer and the Mocs closed with a 6-0 run for the victory.
Huff and Bash Wieland both scored 12 for Chattanooga. Makai Richards scored 10 off the bench on 5-for-5 shooting.
Jayden Dawson had 19 points and six assists to pace the Ramblers (25-12). Miles Rubin had 14 points and Watson added 10 points and six rebounds. Jalen DeLoach scored 13 off the bench. He hit all four of his shots from the floor and all five of his free throws.

After a long and busy season for college athletics, the football season arrives with a host of tantalizing angles. A look at some of the big games among the top teams, what's at stake and the hurdles that must be cleared on the way to the national championship. When does college football start? A handful of games kick off the season Aug. 23, with the most intriguing a Big 12 matchup between No. 22 Iowa State and No. 17 Kansas State that will take place in Dublin, Ireland. Iowa State played in the conference title game last year. The following weekend has some doozies: No. 9 LSU faces No. 4 Clemson, No. 6 Notre Dame visits No. 10 Miami and defending champion No. 3 Ohio State hosts No. 1 Texas. Before the College Football Playoff expanded to 12 teams last year, a game like that might have been make or break. Now, teams have second chances and can afford three (maybe four) losses and still get in. Who are the favorites? The AP Top 25 and the coaches poll both list Texas as the preseason No. 1 team and the Longhorns are currently the favorite (plus-450, or 9-2 odds) to win the national championship, according to BetMGM Sportsbook. Ohio State is right behind them (plus-525), followed by No. 5 Georgia and No. 2 Penn State (both 7-1) and then Clemson and No. 7 Oregon (both 9-1). Key games to watch Preseason No. 7 Oregon visits No. 2 Penn State on Sept. 27 in a rematch of last season's Big Ten title game. Penn State also has a game against Ohio State on Nov. 1. .... Speaking of the Buckeyes, the national title helped them get over their fourth straight loss to preseason No. 14 Michigan. That rematch is in its usual spot, Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 29 at the Big House. ... TCU at North Carolina (Bill Belichick's coaching debut) on Sept. 1 ... Oklahoma vs. Texas on Oct. 11 ... The 12-team playoff The College Football Playoff remains at 12 teams this year with one significant tweak: Unlike last year, conference champions will not be guaranteed a bye in the first round. But the best five conference champions are still guaranteed spots in the tournament. Seeds 5-8 will host first-round games against 9-12 on Dec. 19 (one game) and Dec. 20 (three games). The quarterfinals will be at the Cotton Bowl on Dec. 1, then at the Orange, Rose and Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1. The semifinals will be Jan. 8 at the Fiesta Bowl and Jan. 9 at the Peach Bowl. The title game will take place at Hard Rock Stadium outside of Miami on Jan. 19. Heisman watch Keep in mind that last year's winner, Travis Hunter, didn't show up in the watch list in this very space last year. Amorim unhappy that 'clear' foul went unpunished for Arsenal's winning goal against Man United
MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim believed Arsenal's winning goal in the teams' Premier League match at Old Trafford on Sunday should have been disallowed for a 'clear' foul in the buildup. United goalkeeper Altay Bayındır was put off by Arsenal defender William Saliba as an inswinging corner was delivered by Declan Rice in the 13th minute. As Saliba backed into Bayındır, the goalie flapped at the ball and only managed to knock it across the line toward Riccardo Calafiori, who nodded in from close range. That ultimately secured a 1-0 win for Arsenal and Amorim was disappointed the goal was allowed to stand. 'I think it's clear,' Amorim said. 'Players are touching the goalkeeper without the idea of going for the ball. That is not allowed.' The Portuguese coach added: 'It's protecting the attacking guy and saying that we want (more) goals. But when you are touching the goalkeeper in that way, I think it's hard.' United captain Bruno Fernandes said that in a meeting arranged ahead of the season, the Premier League said referees will call for more fouls if players are blocking opponents at set pieces and not looking at the ball. 'But we know they are just saying that,' Fernandes said. 'Altay was saying the moment he goes to punch the ball, he gets a touch. But obviously we know in the Premier League, they don't give much in those type of situations.' ___

Astros' Yordan Alvarez to start rehab assignment at Double-A Corpus Christi on Tuesday
In a major potential shakeup for fantasy bullpens, Eric Samulski advises fantasy managers to proactively target a pair of Astros relievers in the wake of Josh Hader's reported shoulder discomfort. HOUSTON (AP) Houston Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez will begin a rehabilitation assignment at Double-A Corpus Christi on Tuesday, moving him closer to a return after sitting out for more than three months. 'It's really good news,' manager Joe Espada said. 'The fact that he's feeling better and we're getting to a point where we can see him back is awesome.' Alvarez has been out since May 3 with a small fracture in his right hand that was initially diagnosed as a muscle strain. Alvarez was in Houston on Sunday before the team's series finale against Baltimore after returning from the Astros' spring training facility in Florida, giving Espada a chance to talk with him. 'He is feeling better,' Espada said. 'Good enough to start a rehabilitation assignment.' Espada said Alvarez would need 'a few games before joining our club' but when pressed about exactly how many games or at-bats the left-hander would need, he declined to give further details. 'We're going to start with Tuesday and then we'll go from there,' he said. Espada said Alvarez would serve as the team's designated hitter Tuesday. The return of Alvarez would be a major boost to the Astros as the postseason approaches after he led the team in batting average (.308), home runs (35) and RBIs (86) last season. Houston entered Sunday leading the AL West with a 1 1/2-game lead over the Mariners. The 28-year-old Alvarez hit .210 with three homers and 18 RBIs in 29 games this season before his injury.
