Chattanooga tops Loyola Chicago 80-73, will play UC Irvine in NIT championship game

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Trey Bonham scored 23 points and Honor Huff hit a big 3-pointer late to lead Chattanooga to an 80-73 victory over Loyola Chicago in an NIT semifinal at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Tuesday night.
The Mocs (28-9) will play UC Irvine in the championship game on Thursday. The Anteaters (32-6) set a school record for wins in a season after beating North Texas 69-67 in an earlier semifinal.
Chattanooga trailed 38-34 at the half but rallied to take a 67-57 lead on a Collin Mulholland layup with 7:33 remaining.
Loyola Chicago whittled away until Des Watson hit a 3-pointer to get the Ramblers within 74-73 with 2:37 left. Huff answered with a 3-pointer and the Mocs closed with a 6-0 run for the victory.
Huff and Bash Wieland both scored 12 for Chattanooga. Makai Richards scored 10 off the bench on 5-for-5 shooting.
Jayden Dawson had 19 points and six assists to pace the Ramblers (25-12). Miles Rubin had 14 points and Watson added 10 points and six rebounds. Jalen DeLoach scored 13 off the bench. He hit all four of his shots from the floor and all five of his free throws.

Niemann broke out of a logjam at the top with birdies on Nos. 14-17 and parred the par-4 18th to finish at 15-under 198 at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club. The 26-year-old Niemann also won this year in Australia, Singapore and Mexico. He has six career LIV victories after winning twice on the PGA Tour. 'Pretty cool to be in this place, in this position right now,' Niemann said. 'I'm pretty thankful.' McDowell shot 66, and second-round leader Lahiri had a 68. Bryson DeChambeau, preparing for his U.S. Open title defense at Oakmont, had a 65 to tie for fourth with Phil Mickelson (65) and Bubba Watson (67) at 13 under. Jon Rahm was 10 under after a 68. DeChambeau and Lahiri led the Crushers to their second straight team title and record eighth overall, with Paul Casey and Charles Howell III completing the lineup. 'We're a beast of a team,' DeChambeau said, Mickelson holed a backward chip off a steep slope in heavy greenside rough for a birdie late in his round. 'One of my better ones,' Mickelson said. Maxwell's grand slam highlights Arkansas super regional win eliminating defending champ Vols 11-4
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) — Logan Maxwell had three hits, including a game-breaking grand slam, and Arkansas defeated defending national champion Tennessee 11-4 on Sunday to sweep the best-of-three Fayetteville Super Regional and advance to the College World Series for the 12th time. The Razorbacks had a 3-1 lead with two outs in the fourth inning when Maxwell hit a 1-2 pitch over the left-field wall. That was more than enough for third-seeded Arkansas to advance to Omaha, Nebraska. Arkansas (47-13) will face the winner of the Baton Rouge Super Regional between LSU and West Virginia. Tennessee (46-18), the No. 14 overall seed, only had two hits when they lost to their SEC rivals 4-3 on Saturday. The Vols almost became just the third team from their conference to finish a super regional with fewer than 10 total hits. With two hits in the eighth and two in the ninth, including a two-run home run by pinch hitter Jay Abernathy, they finished with eight. Charles Davalan had a two-run homer in the third for Arkansas. Tennessee got one back in the bottom of the inning, but Maxwell's big bash broke it open in the fourth. Tennessee pitchers walked four batters, all in the seventh inning, including two with the bases loaded to fall behind 10-1.

Pete Alonso closing in on Mets home run record
DENVER (AP) — When he re-signed with the New York Mets last winter, Pete Alonso saw an opportunity to become the team's career leader in home runs and multihomer games. He checked one record off his list Sunday with a pair of two-run shots in a 13-5 victory over the Colorado Rockies — and the burly first baseman is closing in on the other. Alonso's 23rd multihomer game broke a tie with Darryl Strawberry for the most in Mets history. The four-time All-Star and two-time Home Run Derby champion now has 243 career homers, passing David Wright (242) for second place on the franchise list — nine behind Strawberry. 'Honestly, it's just one of those things where I can't really be too involved in it,' Alonso said. 'For me, I just want to win. Whatever happens, capitalize on certain pitches in the zone, then I'll get my chance to do so by helping my team win. That's always been the focus.' Alonso hit two of New York's season-high six homers to help complete a 5-2 trip. He has six home runs and two multihomer games in June after going deep just four times in 27 games in May. He went 5 for 14 during the weekend series and has raised his batting average from .288 to .301 over the last eight games. 'There's a lot to like about his bat right now,' manager Carlos Mendoza said. 'Just dominating pitches in the strike zone. That's who he is. We know that the power's always been there, but now we're looking at a really good hitter.' Alonso wasn't the only Mets player with a banner day. Juan Soto had three hits and walked three times to reach base in all six plate appearances. He became the first New York player to accomplish that feat since Alonso on Aug. 15, 2019, at Atlanta. 'It's not easy to do at the big league level,' Mendoza said. 'You get six times at the plate and you find a way to get on base. Finally getting results, but I feel the at-bat quality has been there.'
