#SHOWBIZ: Amira Othman: No 'when you getting married' questions anymore

KUALA LUMPUR: Popular singer and actress Amira Othman, 32, said that nobody had asked her about marriage during Hari Raya, despite riding high with her latest single Bila Nak Kahwin.
In an interview with Harian Metro yesterday, Amira who hails from Johor Baru and was an Akademi Fantasia Season 10 finalist said that instead, her relatives and fans praised her for delivering a catchy, new tune with a good message.
"I didn't expect this song to do so well, and I am very grateful to composers and lyricists Omar K and Iqie Hugh for choosing me for it," said Amira, who has been "teased" by certain netizens about her friendship with popular singer-actor Fattah Amin.
"Bila Nak Kahwin is a song with a timeless message and all of us have been asked this question during Hari Raya, when we were still single and available," said Amira.
"The true message behind the song is that one's life partner or soulmate is determined by God, and people can only speculate and plan."
Asked if this year would be her last Hari Raya as a single person, Amira said that she was "hoping for the best".

Model Ameera Khan faces backlash for reaping Bumi privileges after admitting her non-Malay ancestry

ONLY in Malaysia does a person's ethnicity receive such close scrutiny. It is not enough to proclaim loyalty and patriotism to one's motherland; it must also be accompanied by declarations identifying with a certain race. The most recent example of this had to do with model and influencer Ameera Khan who had the temerity to insist that she isn't Malay. She was merely clarifying that her mother is of Arab ancestry while her father is of Pakistani descent with the family settling in Kelantan. Ameera went on t9 disclose that – as a matter of convenience – she usually replies that she is Malay when queried about her ethnicity during casual encounters. However, she took the opportunity to clarify the matter in a live Instagram session recently by pointing out that both her parents are NOT Malay. She is proud of her roots and can even speak Kelantanese dialect but some had taken great umbrage at her denial of Malay ancestry. #kualalumpur #rap 'Saya bukan tak nak mengaku berbangsa Melayu, memang ibu dan ayah saya tidak mempunyai darah Melayu. Jadi nak mengaku Melayu buat apa?' – Ameera Khanhttps:// — Harian Metro (@hmetromy) June 9, 2025 As reported by Harian Metro, the 25-year-old celebrity asked why must she claim to be Malay when her ancestry clearly is not. There has been mixed reaction online as netizens proffer their two sen's on the young model's declaration of identity. There were netizens who just plainly did not like her rejection of being labelled 'Malay'. One even went as far as equating Ameera to PATI (illegal foreigner) just because she did not identify herself as a Malay. Quite a few pointed out that there should be clear guidelines by the National Registration Department (NRD) to ensure that people like Ameera do NOT qualify for Bumiputera status/privileges. One extended the question to Ameera's elder sibling – Neelofa – who is in currently enrolled in MRSM (MARA Junior Science College) which is supposedly reserved for Bumiputera. It must be noted that Under Article 160 of the Federal Constitution of Malaysia, a person is considered Malay if they profess the religion of Islam, habitually speak the Malay language and conform to Malay customs. Additionally, they must either be born, born of parents (one of whom was born or domiciled in Malaysia) or be the child of those parents. However, more than few queried why a person need to lie about their heritage or ancestry? Why claim to be something they are clearly not? One netizen sided Ameera by asserting that the forceful claiming of a person's ancestry and heritage as Malay when it isn't is shameful. As one commenter observed, this is what it has boiled down to – citizens who feel they are 'ori' and 'pure' Malays have become disgruntled simply because there are Malaysian Muslims who identify as non-Malays. Few things to note about this storm-in-a-teacup. Firstly, this is not a 'rejection' or 'denial' of Malay ancestry. It is a mere statement of fact that Ameera Khan does not have Malay blood and her surname is a major clue on this issue. Secondly, though Ameera may claim she does not, in fact, have Malay blood running through her veins, she is actually entitled to call herself that as defined by Article 160 of the Federal Constitution. Thirdly, isn't there more important news to occupy Harian Metro's column inches, wondered on commenter' – June 11, 2025 Main image credit: mStar/Instagram

Elderly woman prioritises solitude with cats

Compiled by JUSTIN ZACKN, and R. ARAVINTHAN AT the age of 85, Sepiah Ibrahim lives alone in Kemaman, Terengganu, with only cats for company despite her frail state. She is barely mobile and relies on others for help with her medication, Kosmo! reported. Her nephew Mohamad Sulaiman, who refers to her as 'Mek Su', said his aunt had been dealing with mental health issues since the loss of her baby decades ago. 'Her husband left her not long after,' said Mohamad, 68. He said Mek Su had a motorcycle accident during her younger days which caused her nerve injuries. However, she refuses to move in with other relatives. 'What I can do now is to send her food, clean her house and send her to collect her medication from Kemaman Hospital,' he said. > Malaysian singer and actress Elizabeth Tan (pic) was moved when she found out that a stranger had prayed for her well-being at a mosque, Harian Metro reported. 'I feel appreciated. I'm lucky. I feel loved,' she said. Apparently, she found out about it from a social media posting that the man had prayed that she would become a mother soon. Tan, 31, married a businessman in 2021. Known also as Lizzy, Tan won the Best Supporting Actress award at the Malaysian Film Festival last year for her role in the movie Sheriff: Narko Integriti. #SHOWBIZ: Afieq Shazwan: It's not me, but 'we' are indeed the same age

KUALA LUMPUR: Singer-actor Afieq Shazwan has found himself embroiled in controversy after his name was linked to a celebrity sexual assault case involving a 17-year-old girl. Afieq, whose full name is Mohammad Shafieq Shazwan Zamros, 27, said he was inundated with calls and messages from the media and acquaintances keen to know more about the matter. "Some people said I was that individual, even mentioning the dramas I'd acted in. Plus, I was linked because I'm 27 and have a birth date very close to the individual involved, as we're the same age," he explained. "But, honestly, I don't know anything about it, and it's certainly not me. It's not that I want to avoid making a statement, but I'm incredibly busy with work. "I've just returned from Sabah and Kuching, Sarawak, and my weekend schedule is absolutely packed." He added, "I'm also busy with activities with my mother, cooking and buying kitchen items, as I'm about to perform the haj again. However, I can understand why my name would be mentioned." Afieq told Harian Metro. According to Afieq, he remained calm and initially declined to comment, concerned about offending anyone and protecting his fellow artistes. When asked about his surprise at celebrity names being connected to the case, Afieq expressed his shock but refused to dwell on it, not wanting to be slandered. "I don't want these sexual assault allegations to become slander. It's just that from what I've read in the comments, I understand why people are pointing fingers, perhaps trying to guess," he said. The 'Lelaki Di Telefon' singer and 'Rampas Cintaku' actor emphasised the importance for all celebrities, as public figures, to uphold their conduct. "For my fellow artistes, we should all try to conduct ourselves as best as possible for our careers and, at the same time, protect our reputation as youth icons," he said. "Many people are interested in our work, our songs, our drama series, and to protect that good name, we should look after ourselves. "We don't want incidents like this (sexual harassment) to occur because we're afraid it will escalate," he said. Harian Metro previously reported that a well-known male actor and singer was arrested by the police after being accused of sexually assaulting a teenage girl at a hotel in Selangor. The 17-year-old victim reportedly met the artiste at a café where she worked. After several meetings, the suspect then took the victim to meet him at a hotel. Senior Assistant Commissioner Siti Kamsiah Hassan, Principal Assistant Director of the Sexual, Women and Children Division (D11) of the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department, confirmed the matter. The case is being investigated under Section 14 (a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 (Act 792).
