Italian orienteering athlete Mattia Debertolis died after being found unresponsive during competition at the World Games in Chengdu, organisers said.
The 29-year-old was discovered unconscious during an orienteering event on August 8 and died four days later, said a joint statement from World Games organisers and the International Orienteering Federation (IOF).
The World Games is a multi-sport event held every four years for disciplines not included in the Olympics.
"Despite receiving immediate expert medical care at one of China's leading medical institutions, he passed away," the statement said.
It did not provide details on the cause of death.
Debertolis, from Primiero in eastern Italy, was taking part in the final of the men's middle-distance, the first medal event of the Games.
Footage from the World Games' social media accounts showed athletes running through crop fields and villages on a largely rural course.
The winner, Switzerland's Riccardo Rancan, completed the course in 45 minutes and 22 seconds.
Debertolis was listed as "Did Not Finish" in official results, along with 11 other athletes. (AFP)

Top seeds Sabalenka and Sinner through to last eight
Top seeds Sabalenka and Sinner through to last eight Jannik Sinner goes full stretch to try and get to a shot by Adrian Mannarino at the Cincinnati Open. Photo: Reuters World number one Aryna Sabalenka cruised into the Cincinnati Open quarter-finals with a 6-1 7-5 victory over Jessica Bouzas Maneiro while men's top seed Jannik Sinner beat Adrian Mannarino following a lengthy rain delay. Fresh off a thrilling third-round battle with Emma Raducanu, women's reigning champion Sabalenka had an easier ride against Spaniard Bouzas Maneiro, earning her tour-leading 50th win in one hour and 20 minutes. The Belarusian will next meet 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina in a final-worthy showdown, as the ninth-seeded Kazakh rallied from a set down to beat Australian Open winner Madison Keys 6-7(3) 6-4 6-2. Earlier, six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek reached the quarters with a 6-4 6-4 victory over Sorana Cirstea, with the third-seeded Pole extending her perfect record against the Romanian to 5-0. In the men's draw, defending champion Sinner kept his title defence on track, beating Frenchman Mannarino 6-4 7-6(4) after an almost three-hour rain interruption. The Italian four-time Grand Slam champion struggled to find his rhythm, failing to serve out at 6-5 but sealing the tiebreak with back-to-back aces for his 24th consecutive hard-court victory. Spanish second seed Carlos Alcaraz booked his 18th Masters 1000 quarter-final by beating Italian Luca Nardi 6-1 6-4. The five-times major winner, into the last eight in Cincinnati for the third time, has now won 36 of his last 38 matches. Alcaraz will next face Russian ninth seed Andrey Rublev, who beat Argentine Francisco Comesana 6-2 6-3. (Reuters)

Anti-scalping measures imposed for National Games
Anti-scalping measures imposed for National Games Timothy Chui believes many people are happy to pay a few hundred dollars to attend National Games competitions at Kai Tak Stadium. File photo: RTHK People who purchase tickets for the National Games must carry and produce their proof of identity when entering the venue, according to a travel agent which has been given exclusive rights to sell physical tickets in Hong Kong. China Travel Service, or CTS, says the move is to prevent scalping, although the tickets can be transferred once by having them registered to another person. Tickets for the quadrennial event, to be held in November across the Greater Bay Area, will go on sale from August 28. SAR residents can visit one of CTS' 11 outlets in Hong Kong, or purchase tickets online at several official platforms. On an RTHK programme on Thursday, general manager Yeung Sai-hing said the company has set up a customer service hotline, and staff training was now under way. "Among the 11 outlets, we will extend the opening hours for three of them, located on Hong Kong Island, in Kowloon and the New Territories respectively, until 9pm," he said. "I believe in the early stage, especially when sales begin on the 28th, more people will come to buy the tickets." He was confident sales will go smoothly, saying the agency had previously handled similar major events such as the Olympics. Those who wish to transfer their tickets must do so at a CTS outlet no less than seven working days prior to the event, Yeung added, by bringing a copy of the recipient's identification document. The company is also designing bundled ticket packages with the sector to promote tourism in Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and Macau. Meanwhile, Hong Kong Tourism Association executive director Timothy Chui told the same programme that he believes National Games events staged in the SAR will be popular for both tourists and locals. "I think many tourists or residents have never been to Kai Tak Sports Park," he said. Using rugby sevens as an example, Chui believed many people who follow the competition will buy tickets, while some also wished to check out the venue and the surrounding environment. "Because usually if we buy a concert ticket to get into [Kai Tak Stadium], it would cost more than HK$1,000, but now they only need to pay a few hundred. I believe there will be residents or even tourists who are willing to pay this amount of money to enjoy the National Games."
