SONA 2025: Marcos urges healthier lifestyles, 'car-free' Sundays

GMA Network28-07-2025
President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. on Monday expressed concern over the growing number of overweight Filipino adults, calling for a nationwide shift to healthier, more active lifestyles through accessible community-based fitness initiatives.
Speaking before Congress during his fourth 2025 State of the Nation Address (SONA), Marcos said, "Nakikita natin ang sobrang pagtaas ng timbang ng ating mga kababayang edad dalawampu at pataas. Kaya sikapin nating maging mas aktibo ang ating pamumuhay araw-araw."
(We are seeing an excessive rise in the weight of our countrymen aged 20 and above. That's why we must strive to live more active lifestyles every day.)
In May last year, the Department of Science and Technology - Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) reported a significant increase in overweight and obesity prevalence among Filipino adolescents, from 11.6% in 2018 to 13% in 2021.
Obesity is not an issue facing the Philippines alone. According to research published in The Lancet, rates of obesity and overweight are spiraling due to a "monumental societal failure" to tackle the problem. More than half of adults and almost a third of children and young people set to be affected by 2050, the study found.
Marcos encouraged local government units (LGUs) to organize sports activities such as local leagues, fun runs, and group fitness events like Zumba and aerobics.
He also urged cities and municipalities to open public parks and plazas, and make them inviting spaces for physical activity.
"Ipalaganap natin ang pagsasagawa ng mga palaro at mga paliga, mga fun runs at fun walks, pati na mga pa-aerobics at pa-Zumba," he said.
(Let's encourage organizing sports fests and tournaments, fun runs and fun walks, and even aerobics and Zumba sessions.)
"Para sa mga LGU (local government units), buksan at gawing maaliwalas ang mga park at mga plaza, kung saan makakapag-ensayo ang ating mga mamamayan, bata man o matanda," he added.
(To our LGUs, open and brighten up our parks and plazas so people of all ages can use them to exercise.)
Walkable cities
Marcos also promoted the expansion of "Car-Free Sundays" across the country, citing its current implementation in cities such as Metro Manila, Baguio, Cebu, Iloilo, and Davao.
The vision for these weekly initiatives converts major roads into walkable, bike-friendly spaces, encouraging outdoor movement and reducing pollution.
"Magpatupad tayo ng mga 'Car-Free Sundays', tulad ng ginagawa sa ilang lungsod dito sa Metro Manila, sa Baguio, Cebu, Iloilo, at Davao," he said.
(Let's implement Car-Free Sundays, like what's already being done in some cities in Metro Manila, Baguio, Cebu, Iloilo, and Davao.)
PSC facilities
As additional support, Marcos said the Philippine Sports Commission will now open its facilities to the public for free.
"Simula ngayon, bubuksan ng Philippine Sports Commission sa publiko ang kanilang mga track and field oval sa Pasig, Maynila, at Baguio, upang makapag-jogging na kayo nang libre," he said.
(Starting today, the Philippine Sports Commission will open its track and field ovals in Pasig, Manila, and Baguio to the public for free jogging.)
The President's push for public fitness is part of a broader strategy to combat preventable health conditions and strengthen the country's overall well-being, following recent efforts to improve nutrition among children and access to free medical services. — VDV, GMA Integrated News

1 Tondo blast victim set for surgery; 3 others in ICU — DOH

The six victims of an explosion in Tondo, Manila are currently undergoing medical treatment due to the severity of their injuries. According to a statement Tuesday, the six victims are recuperating at the Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center (JRRMMC) following the explosion. Three of the victims had undergone surgery and are now recovering at the surgical intensive care unit, while another victim is set for surgery due to facial injuries. DOH also shared that the youngest victim was a 14-year-old, who received traumatic brain injury with multiple fractures on the legs, arms, and gashes on the head and torso. Meanwhile, two other victims have been discharged after being treated for minor injuries. The six victims are recipients of the zero-balance billing in DOH hospitals recently enacted by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. following his fourth State of the Nation Address. According to an earlier report from Unang Balita, the explosion occurred on Sunday afternoon at Tayuman and Dagupan Streets in Barangay 234. The blast left the victims bloody and injured on the sidewalk, including the 14-year-old victim who was declared in critical condition. Barangay authorities reported that the victims were scavengers working on the sidewalk when the explosion occurred. Police said the explosion was caused by a compressor the victims were attempting to salvage for parts. — Jiselle Anne Casucian/RF, GMA Integrated News

ASF early detection kits launched by DOST

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) on Tuesday unveiled three early detection kits for African Swine Fever (ASF). The DOST said that the launch was made in an effort to reaffirm their fight against ASF and protection for the Philippine swine industry. Two of the technologies revealed in the launch were the TUSLOB® Rapid DNA Extraction Kit and the VIPtec® ASFV Real-time PCR Detection Kit, both to be used for fast and field-deployable ASF detection. Through the kits, farmers will now be able to extract accurate DNA from the blood of potentially infected pigs in a user-friendly manner on-site. The TUSLOB® Rapid DNA Extraction Kit is equipment-free. Meanwhile, DOST's Filipino-made Mobile Biocontainment Laboratory helps bring diagnosis straight to the outbreak site. Since 2019, ASF has affected 76 out of 82 Philippine provinces, bringing up pork imports to 53.2% in the second quarter of 2025 to fill up gaps in the pork supply. —Jiselle Anne Casucian/ VAL, GMA Integrated News

Marcos: Small cities, municipalities priority in patient transport vehicles distribution

President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. said Friday that the government would prioritize giving patient transport vehicles (PTVs) to smaller cities and municipalities in support of their health projects. Marcos made the remark during the distribution of patient transport vehicles in Dipolog City. ''At inuna namin – hindi namin muna pinarioritize (prioritize) 'yung malalaking lungsod, the big cities because usually mayroon na silang mga facilities. Hindi urgent. Iyong mga maliliit ang inuna namin. Inumpisahan natin fourth, fifth, sixth class na municipality. Then slowly we'll work our way back,'' Marcos said. (We did not prioritize the big cities because they usually have the facilities. It's not urgent. We prioritize the small ones. We started with the fourth, fifth, and sixth class municipalities. Then slowly we'll work our way back.) According to the President, the government, through the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, has already distributed 1,067 PTVs since June 2022. He said this would continue as his administration intends to provide ambulances to all local government units by the end of the year. The PCSO allocated P1 billion in 2025 to procure 395 more PTVs for requesting local government units and national government agencies. A total of 106 PTVs will be distributed to various cities and municipalities across the provinces of Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay, Lanao del Sur and Isabela City in Basilan —VAL, GMA Integrated News
