1 Tondo blast victim set for surgery; 3 others in ICU — DOH
According to a statement Tuesday, the six victims are recuperating at the Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center (JRRMMC) following the explosion.
Three of the victims had undergone surgery and are now recovering at the surgical intensive care unit, while another victim is set for surgery due to facial injuries.
DOH also shared that the youngest victim was a 14-year-old, who received traumatic brain injury with multiple fractures on the legs, arms, and gashes on the head and torso.
Meanwhile, two other victims have been discharged after being treated for minor injuries.
The six victims are recipients of the zero-balance billing in DOH hospitals recently enacted by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. following his fourth State of the Nation Address.
According to an earlier report from Unang Balita, the explosion occurred on Sunday afternoon at Tayuman and Dagupan Streets in Barangay 234.
The blast left the victims bloody and injured on the sidewalk, including the 14-year-old victim who was declared in critical condition.
Barangay authorities reported that the victims were scavengers working on the sidewalk when the explosion occurred.

House: Probe on flood control projects will be fair
The House of Representatives probe on the government's flood control projects will be fair and loyal to the public's interest, House spokesperson Atty. Princess Abante said Wednesday. Abante made the response when asked if the House had the standing to conduct the probe on flood control projects, given that Senator Panfilo Lacson earlier said that around 80 lawmakers are contractors in anomalous government projects, including those involving flood-control. The senator, however, did not provide names of the lawmakers supposedly doubling as contractors of failed and 'ghost' flood projects. 'The number he mentioned, of now, there are more than 300 members of the House with varied political positions and opinions. That is the beauty of the House of Representatives. So yes, I believe that the House can be credible in their investigation,' Abante told reporters. 'Everybody here is encouraged to participate in the hearings and will await for the next hearings to be held. The House will be consistent that it will be faithful to its mandate under the law and to the people," Abante added. Likewise, Abante said that she has no information on lawmakers doubling as contractors as Lacson did not name them to begin with. 'I don't have information on supposed contractors since Senator Lacson did not expound on it,' Abante said. Bicol Saro party-list Rep. Terry Ridon, Chairman of the House Committee on Public Accounts which will investigate the flood control projects, earlier said that Lacson should provide the names. 'In the spirit of transparency and fairness, Senator Lacson should name the House members who are allegedly undertaking government contracts during their term of office,' Ridon, a lawyer, said. 'Direct or indirect financial interest in any contract granted by any government agency is constitutionally prohibited and punishable by existing graft laws,' Ridon added. President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr., during his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA) last July 28, issued a stern warning on government personnel who steal public funds, such as those for flood control projects, even going as far saying 'Mahiya naman kayo.' Senior couple's P6K pension stolen in QC
An unidentified woman was caught in a CCTV footage stealing a P6,000 pension from a senior citizen couple in Barangay Commonwealth, Quezon City. According to a report of GMA Integrated News' James Agustin on Unang Balita Wednesday, the suspect approached the couple in front of a printing shop and offered them a supposed rice assistance from a congressman. The suspect asked the couple to write their names and address on a small piece of paper. While the couple was busy writing, the suspect was seen in the CCTV footage taking the wallet inside the bag of the elderly woman. The suspect asked for a photocopy of their ID cards and fled. When the elderly woman checked her bag, her wallet was no longer there. 'Bigla lang silang lumapit at nagsabi na hindi na kayo magbili ng bigas kasi may nagpamigay na kongresista ng bigas. Tag-limang kilo. Malaki na yun dahil dalawa kami ni mister,' the victim said. (She suddenly came and said that you don't need to buy rice because a congressman was giving away rice. Five kilos each. That was a lot because we are two.) 'Pinasulat niya ako ng address at pangalan ko sa maliit lang na papel. 7 leptospirosis patients die in San Lazaro Hospital
The San Lazaro Hospital in Manila has recorded seven deaths due to leptospirosis in the first five days of August. According to Maki Pulido's Tuesday report on '24 Oras,' among the fatalities is a 16-year-old teenager who died due to acute renal or kidney failure. A doctor at San Lazaro noted that all seven fatalities waded through the floods caused by the continuous downpour brought by the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) and tropical cyclones. 'Napapansin namin na ang severity ng mga sakit ngayon medyo aggressive. Sa tingin namin na within two to seven days, nagkakaroon sila ng komplikasyon sa sa kidney, liver, respiratory system, o lungs. Nakikita namin na hindi na sila nakakaihi o hirap silang huminga. Kailangan namin i-ventilator,' said Dr. David Suplico, San Lazaro Hospital medical center chief. ('We've noticed that currently, the severity of illnesses is quite aggressive. We think that within two to seven days, patients are having complications in the kidneys, liver, respiratory system, or lungs. We've observed that they can no longer urinate or are having difficulty breathing. We need to put them on a ventilator.) As of August 5, 45 leptospirosis patients are confined at the San Lazaro Hospital, of which 15 are minors. Suplico noted that each case can already be considered a complicated case, as the patients' kidneys, lungs, and liver are affected. According to San Lazaro Hospital's data, most of the leptospirosis patients are from Metro Manila, Cavite, and Laguna, with most of them being from Manila. 'Usually, nakikita namin ito sa mga pasyente na riders na lumusong sa baha na may paltos ang mga paa at sila ay mga na-confine sa aming ospital,' Suplico said. (We usually observed that patients confined in our hospital are motorcycle riders who waded through floodwaters with blisters on their feet.) Four of the confined leptospirosis patients are in the intensive care unit. This included the husband of Marlyn Benitez, who, despite wanting to get prophylaxis, cannot do so because they cannot go to the health center due to the flood. Meanwhile, the Amang Rodriguez Memorial Medical Center in Marikina City logged 44 leptospirosis cases as of August 5, most of which are from the city. The Department of Health has recorded more than 500 leptospirosis cases in July 2025. However, there is still no data on how many have contracted leptospirosis due to the successive weather disturbances. Dr. Imelda Mateo of Amang Rodriguez Memorial Medical Center reminded the public to wear boots when braving the flood or to take prophylaxis.
