Massive Vehicle Rally in Goa Marks Prelude to Sanatan Rashtra Shankhnad Mahotsav
The procession began near the Sanatan Ashram in Ponda, with vehicles proceeding through key locations including Kavale-Tisk Ponda, Shantinagar Junction, Goa Bagayatdar, Ponda Post Office, and Shree Hanuman Temple, before culminating near the historic fort at Farmagudi. Simultaneously, convoys of vehicles carrying participants entered Goa through border points such as Patradevi in North Goa and Canacona in the South.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation, with saffron flags displayed on two-wheelers, four-wheelers, and buses. Participants chanted slogans including 'Har Har Mahadev', 'Sanatan Dharmacha Vijay Aso' (Victory to Sanatan Dharma), and 'Jayatu Hindu Rashtram' (Victory to the Hindu Nation). Streets along the procession route were adorned with rangoli, and traditional aarti rituals were performed by women at several locations to welcome the procession.
The rally was flagged off with a ceremonial worship of the Dharma Dhwaj (flag of Dharma), conducted by former Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Arun Desai.
Sanatan Sanstha spokesperson Abhay Vartak described the event as a 'spiritual pilgrimage,' drawing a parallel with the annual warkari pilgrimage to Pandharpur. 'On the occasion of the 83rd birth anniversary of Sanatan Sanstha's founder, Dr Jayant Balaji Athavale, thousands of devotees from India and abroad have arrived in Goa. This is more than a rally—it is a demonstration of collective devotion,' Vartak said.
Organisers claimed it was one of the largest such religious gatherings the state has witnessed in recent times. Police and local officials were deployed along the route to ensure order and manage the flow of traffic.
The Sanatan Rashtra Shankhnad Mahotsav, which opens formally on Saturday, is expected to feature a series of discourses, cultural events, and discussions on spiritual and socio-cultural issues. Participants and spiritual leaders from across India are scheduled to attend.

Scientific temper is important to completely claim the Right to Life, said retired Supreme Court Judge Abhay Oka while delivering the Dr Narendra Dabholkar Memorial Lecture in Pune on Sunday. Oka emphasised that Article 21 of the Indian Constitution guaranteed the Right to Life with dignity and prosperity, and that a scientific temper was important to fully claim these rights. Oka said, 'If Article 21 of the Constitution has given us a Right to Life with dignity, what does it mean? It is not just living with respect but also living meaningfully. Reading good literature and good thoughts, artwork, watching a comedy film or a stand-up comedian's show, this makes life prosperous. This is how we fulfill the Right to Life. Therefore, it is important to develop a scientific temper and spirit of enquiry to fully claim the Right to Life with prosperity.' The retired judge also talked about how people use scientific equipment in their daily lives but do not develop a scientific temper: 'In Article 51(a) of the Constitution where scientific temper, humanism and the spirit of inquiry and reform come together…Just using scientific equipment does not mean that people have scientific temper. In a lighter vein, DJs are used in many of our festivals. These hurt the ears and are their levels much above the permitted decibel limits according to the rules. DJ systems are created by science, but just because we are using it we cannot say that we have scientific temper.' At the same event, Retired Supreme Court Judge Hemant Gokhale said, 'We killed Dr Dabhokar, also killed comrade (Govind) Pansare. This is the disposition of Maharashtra today. And the way minority and minority religion people are being harassed, this is against scientific temper…You all must have read that day before in Jamner, a young man was killed because he belonged to a religion. What kind of scientific temper is this?' The lecture was held before the 12th anniversary of the assasination of Dr Narendra Dabholkar on August 20, who was one of India's foremost rationalists and anti-superstition activists. Dabholkar was gunned down in Pune in 2013 while on a walk. Two people were convicted for his murder in 2024 by a special court in Pune while three others, including the mastermind accused, were acquitted due to lack of evidence. All accused had links to extremist Hindu organisation Sanatan Sanstha. MANS and Dabholkar's family have questioned the CBI for not appealing the acquittals in higher courts.

Bandora p'yat denies voter list irregularities at Sanatan Ashram
Ponda: Following Goa Pradesh Congress Committee chief Amit Patkar's allegations of over 119 electors at a single address, which had raised suspicion, the Bandora village panchayat has refuted these allegations. The panchayat claimed that the 119 electors are legally included in the voters' list and are permanent residents of Sanatan Ashram in its Ramnathi ward. Sarpanch Ramchandra Naik said the Sanatan Ashram in Ramnathi has ample accommodation, and many devotees from across India reside permanently in the ashram for sadhana. 'Indian law allows any citizen to reside across India and enrol himself or herself in the voters' list at the particular area,' Naik told reporters at Ponda on Wednesday. He said Patkar should avoid baseless allegations and verify who promoted vote banks in hutments across the state, warning that even Rohingyas might be staying there. 2013 Pune murder: Dabholkar murder convict tells HC there's no evidence against him
MUMBAI: Sharad Kalaskar, 31, who was convicted in May 2024 by a Pune trial court for the 2013 murder of rationalist and anti-superstition activist Dr Narendra Dabholkar, told the Bombay High Court on Thursday that no prima facie case had been established against him during the investigation and that no evidence was led against him at trial. 2013 Pune murder: Dabholkar murder convict tells HC there's no evidence against him Kalaskar has filed an appeal against his conviction and sought bail before a division bench of justice Suman Shyam and justice Shyam Chandak. Appearing on Kalaskar's behalf, advocate Nitin Pradhan argued that the prosecution had failed to produce any evidence linking his client to the Sanatan Sanstha, a Hindu nationalist organisation that has been under scrutiny for its alleged role in the murder. Dr Dabholkar, founder of the Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmoolan Samiti (MANS), was shot dead on the morning of August 20, 2013, during a routine walk in Pune. The killing was allegedly carried out by two men on a motorcycle, later identified as Kalaskar and Sachin Andure—both reportedly affiliated with the Sanstha. While both were convicted earlier this year, the court had also criticised investigative agencies for failing to identify the masterminds behind the plot. Sanatan Sanstha has also been linked to the killings of other prominent rationalists and thinkers, including CPI leader Govind Pansare and scholar MM Kalburgi. In the Dabholkar case, three other accused—Virendrasingh Tawade, Sanjeev Punalkar and Vikram Bhave—were acquitted due to lack of evidence. During Thursday's hearing, Kalaskar's counsel questioned several aspects of the investigation and trial. He submitted that the firearm allegedly used in the crime was recovered in August 2013 at the instance of two other individuals—Vikas Khandelwal and Manish Nagori—but neither the weapon nor the duo were mentioned in the chargesheet or examined during trial. Though the firearm was sent for forensic testing, the prosecution failed to establish any ballistic link between the gun and the pellets recovered from Dr Dabholkar's body, Kalaskar claimed. He also argued that key police officers involved in registering the FIR and conducting the investigation were not examined by the prosecution, and thus could not be cross-examined during trial. Kalaskar further pointed out that several alleged conspirators had been acquitted and that the weapon said to have been used in the shooting was never formally introduced as evidence during the trial. The high court has posted the matter for further hearing on August 21.
