KUCHING (May 28): Sarawak has provided an allocation of RM13.5 billion to all nine Regional Development Agencies in the state with each agency receiving an allocation of RM1.5 billion, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
The State Minister of Finance and New Economy II said of the RM13.5 billion, RM7.5 billion was allocated under Sarawak's annual budget to finance the implementation of 901 development projects under the supervision of the five Regional Development Agencies.
'Among them are the Sri Aman Development Agency (SADA), Betong Division Development Agency (BDDA), Rajang Delta Development Agency (RADDA), Greater Kuching Development Coordinated Agency (GKCDA), and Mid Rajang Regional Development Agency (MiRRDA).
'Of the total, 894 projects are physical projects, while seven are non-physical projects,' he added when delivering his winding-up speech for the ministry at the State Legislative Assembly sitting, today.
He said that as of April 2025, 82 projects or nine per cent had been completed and that the remaining 819 projects or 91 per cent were in various stages of implementation.
In addition, he also said RM6.0 billion has been allocated under Alternative Financing for projects under the supervision of regional development agencies.
'These include the Northern Regional Development Agency (NRDA), the Highland Development Agency (HDA), the Upper Rajang Development Agency (URDA), and the Integrated Samarahan Regional Development Agency (IRSDA).
'To date, a total of RM3.19 billion has been spent with 601 projects completed,' he said.
Uggah said Sarawak had established various Regional Development Agencies to bridge the development gap between urban and rural areas and accelerate infrastructure development throughout Sarawak.
The initiative, he said, was implemented through a bottom-up approach in project planning and implementation.
Regarding the performance of project implementation under Alternative Financing, Uggah said that this year the Sarawak Government had allocated a total of RM8.12 billion for the implementation of 1,571 projects.
'As of April 2025, a total of RM1.11 billion or 14 per cent of the total allocation has been spent,' he said.
He said that of the total, 1,514 projects were categorised as physical projects while 57 projects were non-physical.
'To date, 974 projects or 61 per cent have been completed, while the remaining 597 projects or 39 per cent are in various stages of implementation,' he said.

S'wak govt committed to rural growth, says Uggah

KUCHING: The increase in rural development allocation for this year's Sarawak budget is a reflection of the state government's unwavering resolve to narrow the rural-urban gap and ensure equitable growth. Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said RM6.8bil had been allocated under the Sarawak 2025 Budget for rural development, which rose from RM5.695bil in 2024, indicating Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg's clear commitment to uplift the well-being of the rural communities. In his message for the Gawai Dayak festival, which begins today, Uggah said the rural development focus has seen major bridge projects being implemented as growth catalysts. 'Five (bridges) have already been completed, including the Batang Saribas 1 Bridge in Pusa, Betong and others such as the iconic Bintulu Jepak, Muara Lassa, Marudi and Batang Rajang bridges. 'Six more, including the nation's longest river bridge – Batang Lupar 1 – are expected to be completed by year-end,' said Uggah, who is also the State Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, Bernama reported. He said that Gawai Dayak should be accepted as a festival to bridge inter-racial relationships in Sarawak, which has been a pertinent essence for the state to continue progressing. 'Just as bridges connect our cities and villages, this Gawai season should also serve as a 'bridge' to strengthen the bond of friendship, unity and harmony among us all. Let us celebrate our diversity under the spirit of 'Segulai Sejalai' or Together in Unity,' he added.

Nanta proposes Dataran Bujang Berani in Kapit to honour Dayak community

KUCHING: An iconic square named Dataran Bujang Berani is being proposed in Kapit, in the central interior of Sarawak, as a tribute to the significant contributions of the Dayak community in the aspects of national security and development. Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, who is also the Member of Parliament for Kapit, said the square is proposed to be built near the historic Fort Silvia to serve as a landmark with the potential to become a symbol to commemorate 100 years of peace in Kapit and the struggle of the Dayak community. 'The Kapit division is one in the interior regions and a part where the Dayak community once contributed to the development of Malaysia that we have today,' he said in a statement from the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) during the launch of the book 'Commemorating A Century of Kapit Peacekeeping (1924–2024)' here today. He said the proposal to build the square is not only aimed at commemorating the historic peace event but also as a recognition of the Dayak community who have long contributed to defending the country, including before the establishment of Malaysia. 'Before the formation of Malaysia, they (Dayak people) had already fought for the security of Malaya during the Malayan Emergency as Sarawak Rangers and also as Malaysian Rangers,' he said. Nanta said Dataran Bujang Berani has the potential to be established as a historical reference centre and a symbol of unity for future generations. With regard to the launch of 'Commemorating A Century of Kapit Peacekeeping (1924–2024)', he said, the book represents an important document that compiles historical information, papers, speeches, and a collection of photographs related to the peacekeeping events among various Dayak sub-ethnic groups in Kapit 100 years ago. 'This book does not only immortalise the historic moments that occurred between the communities in Sarawak and the Indonesian border areas, but also serves as a valuable reference for future generations to understand the foundation of the harmony built today,' he added.
