Horse racing tips: Thursday May 1

Telegraph01-05-2025

There are six horse racing meetings taking place across the UK and Ireland on Thursday, including the third day of the Punchestown Festival (2.30-6.35pm), which provides the only jumps action.
On the Flat there are fixtures at Redcar (1.45-5.10), Yarmouth (2.05-5.35), Southwell (2.25-5.20), Chelmsford (5.45-8.45) and Ayr (5.50-8.30).
Our nap of the day races on the all-weather at Southwell and is chasing a hat-trick of wins.

4.45 Reginald Charles – Class 6 Handicap (7f)
REGINALD CHARLES has won both his races since switching trainers from Bryan Smart to Geoff Oldroyd in January, and is looking to complete a hat-trick here.
After a year out, the five-year-old gelding returned to action within a week of his move, winning over course and distance, and followed up with a victory over the same trip at Newcastle last month.
Those back-to-back wins have resulted in a 6lb rise in the weights, but we are confident the selection has further improvement in him and can overcome that.

Betfair bet £10 get £50 33739397

Sign up at Betfair today to bet £10 on the Epsom Oaks and get £50 in free bets when you use the Betfair promo code ZSKAOG The Epsom Derby Festival has arrived and bookies Betfair is getting in on the action offering £50 in free bets when new customers sign-up and place a £10 bet on the Epsom Oaks. The Oaks, a distinguished Group 1 flat race for three-year-old fillies, shines brightly as a symbol of the rich tradition in British horse racing. Taking place at Epsom under the management of the Jockey Club, this race spans a demanding distance of one mile, four furlongs, and six yards. Since its first run in 1779, when Bridget emerged victorious, The Oaks has been a key event in the racing calendar. As one of the five annual Classic races, The Oaks is notable for being the second oldest, with only the St Leger predating it. Its historical importance is underscored by its seniority over the famous Derby by a year. This year, Desert Flower stands out as the favourite. Trained by Charlie Appleby and ridden by William Buick, this unbeaten filly by Night Of Thunder has made an impressive mark with her five consecutive wins. Her notable victories include triumphs at the Group 1 Fillies' Mile (2024) and the 1000 Guineas (2025), where she convincingly beat Lake Victoria by 2¼ lengths. Adding to the anticipation, Aiden O'Brien is keen to reclaim The Oaks title with his entries Whirl and Minnie Hauk, both considered strong contenders according to the odds. Additionally, Giselle presents an interesting prospect at 10/1 for those eyeing an each-way bet. With such talented contenders ready to race, this year's Oaks promises to deliver thrilling action on Epsom's historic course. Major twist in Rangers manager search as new ODDS-ON favourite to become Ibrox boss revealed

Ancelotti was previously the favourite, but now the bookies have got a new odds-on favourite for the role. One section read: "Our first priority together is clear: hiring a new men's head coach. "That process is already well underway, and we look forward to sharing more updates soon." Former Real Madrid coach Ancelotti has been leading the race for quite some time, but now Martin has overtaken him, according to the experts at Betfair. It has been a winding path for the Gers in their search for a new gaffer, ex-boss Steven Gerrard looked most likely at one point, but has since ruled himself out of the race. There was a point where both Ancelotti and Martin looked to be eyeing jobs away from Ibrox too, with the Scot set to take over at Leicester, and Ancelotti looking into the continent for his first managerial gig. Both names have remained firmly in the running though, and look to be the two remaining serious contenders. Martin has been out of a job since December, when he was sacked from Premier League basement boys Southampton after 73 matches in charge of club, which included a promotion back to England's top flight. Ancelotti on the other hand is yet to have his first management gig, but has coached under his dad Carlo since 2012, most recently as Los Blancos assistant manager. The Italian looked set to follow his dad once more as he embarked on the Brazil national team job, but has decided he wants to start a management career of his own. With Rangers' takeover finally announced earlier this week, the club look to move fast in securing the signature of their new boss. Rangers fans react as 49ers takeover completed It was announced that the US consortium would invest fresh capital of around £20million into the Light Blues. Rangers' pre-season starts in the next few weeks, with Champions League qualifiers rapidly approaching too. The new chiefs will want their man in place sooner, rather than later.
