CEOs Embrace AI But Fear Knowledge Gaps, Cisco Study Finds
A new study from Cisco, a global provider of networking and security solutions, reveals a paradox among CEOs. While 80% recognize the potential benefits of AI and plan to integrate it into their operations, 70% fear that gaps in their knowledge will hinder key decision-making, stifle growth, and result in missed opportunities, putting them behind competitors. However, these CEOs are not letting fear stop them. With support from their IT teams and trusted partners, they are focusing on empowering their workforce, modernizing infrastructure, and strengthening cybersecurity to gain a competitive advantage in an AI-driven future.
Cisco's research highlights a growing concern among CEOs about losing ground to competitors due to gaps in IT and infrastructure. More than 70% of CEOs worry about missing out on opportunities, and over half (53%) believe that a lack of investment in technology is already costing them a competitive edge. Two-thirds of CEOs are concerned about the opportunity costs of not investing more in technology. The costs of inaction are not hypothetical—CEOs expect higher operating costs, reduced profits, lower productivity, and a decline in market share if they don't act now.
For CEOs who are facing these fears, the rewards of AI adoption extend far beyond simply keeping up with competitors. Cisco's research shows that AI is seen as a key tool for driving efficiency (69%), spurring innovation (68%), and outpacing competitors (54%). However, realizing AI's full potential requires breaking down barriers like skills shortages, infrastructure gaps, and security risks.
While CEOs are focused on the bigger picture, their CIOs and CTOs are dealing with operational challenges, such as a lack of compelling business use cases. This tension reflects AI's current exploratory phase, where 82% of CEOs who recognize AI's benefits must support experimentation today to unlock long-term value.
