Perak govt hopes JRTB upgrade will be included in 13MP
Saarani said the state government had conveyed its intention to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during his visit to Lumut last week.
'What's most important is to reassess the alignment and widening of the JRTB. The upgrade involves more than just resurfacing; it requires a full reconstruction, as the existing structure is so old that some of the damage has exposed the road base.
'This highway has been in use for over 40 years, and simply patching up damaged sections may no longer be sufficient. However, the state government fully understands that constructing a new alignment or rebuilding the JRTB would require substantial funding,' he said at a press conference after officiating the closing ceremony of the 2025 National Training Week at the Ipoh Convention Centre here today.
Saarani said the state government has also instructed the State Infrastructure, Energy, Water and Public Transport chairman, Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin, and Human Resources, Health, Indian Community Affairs and National Integration chairman A. Sivanesan, to prepare a report and study on upgrading the JRTB and Gerik Hospital.
'Mohammad Nizar will obtain information and data from the Works Ministry regarding the upgrade of the JRTB, while Sivanesan is working on applying to the Health Ministry for the upgrading of Gerik Hospital, as there is an urgent need in the event of accidents. Typically, victims are taken to Hospital Taiping or the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital.
'If upgraded, it would be sufficient for patients or victims to be treated at Gerik Hospital, provided it is equipped with the necessary facilities and expertise. Once the study is completed, we will submit a letter to the relevant ministry,' he added.
In the early hours of June 9, a tragic accident along the JRTB near Tasik Banding, Gerik, claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Perguruan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students when the chartered bus transporting them from Jertih, Terengganu, to the main campus in Tanjong Malim, Perak, was involved in a crash.
The crash also left 33 others injured, including the bus driver and his assistant, as well as the driver and three passengers of a multi-purpose vehicle.

Melaka Govt To Improve Educational Facilities In Rembia Constituency
ALOR GAJAH, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- The Melaka government is committed to improving educational facilities in the Rembia state constituency, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh. He said that the initiative involved the construction of a new building for the Alor Gajah District Education Office worth RM15.9 million and a new building for the Datuk Seri Mohd Zin Vocational College valued at RM15.8 million. 'Given the large number of students in the area, the state government has also proposed the construction of a new national secondary school to the federal government. 'Insya-Allah, we will strive to ensure that it is included in the 13th Malaysia Plan,' he said at the closing ceremony of the Rembia-level Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat (WRUR) Programme and the launch of the 2025 state-level National Month and Flying the Jalur Gemilang campaign at Dataran Keris tonight. Also present were State Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Communications Committee chairman Datuk Fairul Nizam Roslan, who is also the Rembia constituency coordinator and state secretary Datuk Azhar Arshad. Ab Rauf said that the state government had also agreed to build a Sekolah Rendah Agama (SRA) or religious primary school, in Kampung Rembia and a kindergarten in Kampung Sungai Petai as high-impact development projects for next year. He said that the Melaka Islamic Religious Department (JAIM) had allocated over RM90,000 to upgrade two SRAs in the Rembia constituency and the Sekolah Menengah Arab Al-Faizin in Jelatang. Ab Rauf added that the state government had allocated RM8.6 million through the Melaka Health Department to upgrade the second operation theatre at Alor Gajah Hospital, which is expected to be completed by April 2026. 'In addition, RM1.4 million has been approved to repair the roof of the Alor Gajah Health Clinic's Klinik Ibu dan Anak unit, while RM435,000 has been allocated for repairs at the Rembia Health Clinic,' he said.

2026 budget to have special focus on tackling obesity, diabetes

(Envato Elements pic) KUALA LUMPUR : The health ministry will place special emphasis on tackling obesity and diabetes in the 2026 federal budget scheduled to be tabled in October, says its minister, Dzulkefly Ahmad. Dzulkefly said his ministry has submitted several proposals on the matter and is awaiting Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's tabling of the budget. He pointed out that both health conditions were key contributors to the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases in the country. 'The National Health and Morbidity Survey 2023 found that 3.55 million Malaysians, or 15.6% of adults aged 18 and above, suffer from diabetes, while 4.58 million, or 21.8%, are obese,' he said after launching a programme as part of an integrated treatment for diabetic patients. Dzulkefly said obesity, diabetes, heart disease, stroke and cancer accounted for more than 70% of premature deaths in Malaysia, costing the nation over RM64 billion annually in treatment, care, lost productivity and early death.

Tawau hospital to be heart care referral centre

TAWAU: Tawau Hospital will become the referral centre for heart patients from Sabah's east coast once its Invasive Cardiac Laboratory (ICL) project is implemented soon, the first such facility in the region. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said the site and infrastructure for the equipment had been identified and he hoped it could be supplied without delay. 'The tender will be issued within the next month or two,' he told reporters after inspecting progress on the ICL during his visit to Tawau Hospital on Thursday. Earlier, he launched the hospital's Pharmacy Park & Take service, aimed at reducing waiting times and easing access for senior citizens, while helping to ease congestion at pharmacy counters. Dr Dzulkefly said the ICL would enable treatment times for heart attack patients to be reduced to under 90 minutes for primary PCI procedures. The lab will offer diagnostic procedures such as coronary angiography, right and left heart catheterisation, interventional treatment and related services. Previously, critical heart patients from the east coast had to be referred to treatment centres as far as Kota Kinabalu, causing delays and higher risks. The new facility is expected to save both time and costs by avoiding long-distance transfers. Dr Dzulkefly also opened the upgraded Maternal and Child Health (MCH) building at Merotai Besar Health Clinic, featuring larger consultation rooms, a safer and more mother-friendly delivery room and improved facilities for children. He also launched a Mobile Pharmacy initiative by an NGO to deliver medicines directly to patients' homes using motorcycles. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health (MOH) will increase manpower and conduct urgent infrastructure repairs at Lahad Datu Hospital to improve service delivery and patient safety. Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said the hospital, classified as a minor specialist facility with 13 areas of expertise, needs additional staff to meet operational demands. 'We have identified 13 medical officers for the first phase of deployment, with seven more to follow in the second phase,' he said according to Bernama. Dr Dzulkefly highlighted critical upgrades, including overdue repairs to the Labour Ward, scheduled under Rolling Plan 1 of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). 'I have personally observed structural cracks in the Labour Ward that have persisted for years. This is a safety issue that cannot be compromised,' he said. He added that outdated facilities will also be refurbished as a priority.
