'Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again.'
Few opening lines in literature are as haunting—or as instantly transporting—as the first sentence of Rebecca, Daphne du Maurier's 1938 masterpiece of gothic suspense. With its brooding atmosphere, psychological tension, and a romance shadowed by secrets, Rebecca continues to hold readers in a thrall. Even Hollywood keeps returning to her stories (Rebecca, The Birds, My Cousin Rachel). If you love Rebecca's intoxicating blend of romance, mystery, and gothic dread, here are five modern novels that will keep you up all night.
1. The Silent Patient – Alex Michaelides
A psychological thriller with a haunting love story at its core, The Silent Patient follows Alicia Berenson, a woman who shoots her husband and then refuses to speak. Theo Faber, a forensic psychologist, becomes obsessed with uncovering her motives—but the truth is far more twisted than he could imagine. With its gothic undertones and shocking revelations, this is a perfect read for Rebecca fans who crave obsession and deception.
2. The Wife Between Us – Greer Hendricks & Sarah Pekkanen
A clever, twisty tale of marriage, jealousy, and revenge, this novel plays with perception in the best way. Is the ex-wife bitter and unstable, or is there something far more sinister lurking beneath the surface of her replacement's picture-perfect life? The shifting narratives and psychological tension make this a gripping companion to Rebecca's themes of jealousy and hidden pasts.
3. Mexican Gothic – Silvia Moreno-Garcia
For those who adored Rebecca's eerie atmosphere, Mexican Gothic delivers a chilling tale of a woman drawn into a decaying mansion's dark secrets. When Noemí Taboada is sent to check on her ailing cousin, she uncovers a family curse, a seductive yet dangerous husband, and a house that seems alive with malice. Gothic romance meets psychological horror in this intoxicating read.
4. The Death of Mrs Westaway – Ruth Ware
A modern gothic mystery dripping with suspense, this novel follows Hal, a struggling tarot reader who receives a mysterious inheritance letter—but the deceased woman may not actually be her grandmother. As Hal infiltrates the eerie Westaway estate, she's drawn into a web of lies, betrayals, and long-buried family secrets. The brooding setting and unreliable characters make this a must-read for Rebecca devotees.
5. The Last Mrs Parrish – Liv Constantine
A seductive, cunning thriller about ambition and revenge, this book follows Amber Patterson as she infiltrates the glamorous life of Daphne Parrish—only to discover that perfection comes at a price. With its themes of obsession, manipulation, and the dark side of desire, it's a deliciously wicked read that echoes Rebecca's exploration of jealousy and deception.
Honorable Mention: Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë (if you somehow haven't read it yet!)

Butterfly review: Kim Daniel Dae's series is stylish and slick but lacks grit

'Butterfly' has all the ingredients of a gripping thriller, be it espionage, emotional stakes, a fractured family dynamic, and yet somehow, the recipe feels under-seasoned. The six-episode first season, set against the bustling and lesser-seen corners of Seoul, Daegu, and Pohang-si, opens with promise but settles into a glossy, action-heavy rhythm that prioritises spectacle over Dae Kim plays David Jung, a former US intelligence operative who's been living under the radar after faking his own death nine years ago. His quiet exile is disrupted when he learns his now-adult daughter Rebecca (Reina Hardesty) is in town. David, who feels guilty for abandoning his daughter when nine, tries to reconnect, only to discover Rebecca has evolved into a talented but cold-blooded agent for Caddis, a shadowy spy organisation headed by his ex-partner Juno (Piper Perabo). Their reunion, staged during Rebecca's mission to take down a Russian operative, quickly unfolds is a 'love to hate you' bond, a push-and-pull between a father desperate to reclaim his child and a daughter whose loyalty lies firmly with the woman who raised her in his absence. The screenplay keeps toggling between the ruthless machinations of Caddis and the fragile, simmering attempts at reconnection. These familiar tropes, the vulnerability beneath toughness, the silent cry of a daughter, the unshakeable instinct to protect, are well-worn but rarely ineffective, giving 'Butterfly' just enough emotional tension to keep audiences engaged. When it comes to action, the show is relentless. Each episode is stuffed with explosions, car chases, knife fights, and shoot-outs. The adrenaline is undeniable, but it comes at a cost. The story's emotional beats are buried under the noise. The father-daughter drama, which should have been the series' anchor, gets drowned in a sea of stunts. Like the game David and Rebecca once played as father and daughter, 'Butterfly' is ultimately about chasing what's just out of reach, and realising some things can't be 'Butterfly' isn't without its charms. There are a couple of late-game twists worth sticking around for, and the South Korean setting lends a fresh visual appeal. Daniel is magnetic in the leading role he's long deserved, balancing David's quiet torment with bursts of steely resolve. Perabo brings a sly, unpredictable energy to Juno. Reina as Rebecca is impressive, as Rebecca walks the thin line between expressing little or too much. Kim Tae-hee, who plays Eunju, is effective but given way too little to the end, 'Butterfly' is slick and stylish, but lacks the grit and complexity it promises.'Butterfly' is streaming on Prime Video.- Ends3 out of 5 stars for 'Butterfly'.Must Watch

Bengaluru woman rental ad goes viral for accepting smokers, non-vegetarians, even ‘Satan worshipers', see how social media reacted

Synopsis A Bengaluru woman's rental advertisement went viral on X, not for the apartment itself, but for its unique and inclusive criteria. While specifying preferences like female tenants, smokers, and even "Satan worshipers" being welcome, she emphasized that kindness was the only non-negotiable requirement. The post resonated with many, praising her open-mindedness and focus on decency. ET Online A Bengaluru woman's witty and inclusive rental post on social media has gone viral — not for its apartment details, but for its blend of humour, warmth, and a firm emphasis on kindness, thanks to one standout phrase: 'Satan worshiper.'Posting on X (formerly Twitter), she announced she was moving out of her 'absolute favourite place' and was seeking a female tenant to take over the master bedroom in her 3BHK apartment near the Embassy Golf Links (EGL) area. The location, she noted, was perfect for professionals working in Domlur, Indiranagar, HAL, or those commuting to Bellandur via Wind Tunnel listing included standard information — rent of ₹18,300, a refundable deposit of ₹38,000, and a one-time setup cost of ₹22,000. The house is fully furnished, offers ample storage, sits on an elevated ground floor, and has excellent ventilation. But the part that caught the internet's attention was the tenant criteria: 'Female only, can be a smoker, non-vegetarian, satan worshiper. Everything accepted except unkindness.' — rooftopsodapop (@rooftopsodapop) This mix of extreme openness and an uncompromising stance on decency resonated online, with users praising the no-nonsense yet kind-hearted tone. The post painted a vivid picture of the apartment's appeal — cherry blossoms blooming on the lane, sunlight streaming into the room, and two 'floofs,' Sandy and Channel, who greet the tenant daily. She also described the location as 'a short auto ride from all the cool places in Indiranagar' and called EGL 'an excellent walking/running track,' sharing photos of the bright, airy space. Reactions poured in — one user joked, 'Satan worshiper, pet snakes allowed?' while another remarked, 'Kindness being an absolute requirement is a first.' Some also questioned the common Bengaluru practice of outgoing tenants finding replacements themselves, asking, 'Why do Bangalore people try to find the next tenant, isn't that the owner's responsibility?'
