Thoothukudi Collector instructs officials to address farmers' grievances within seven days
They said that multiple irrigation tanks in the district, including Kadambankulam and Pannaiyarkulam in Sathankulam region, have not received water from Manimuthar 3rd reach canal, resulting in severe drought conditions in the area. The farmers also demanded distribution of subsidised seeds for cotton, maize and sunflower.
Additionally, the farmers alleged that officials are demanding bribes for issuing free housing pattas and called for strict actions against those involved.
The farmers' associations suggested that the 'Thangai' tank in Venkataramanujapuram be brought under the control of PWD for effective water management. The tank currently irrigates around 57 hectares of agricultural land in the region.
They added that many bags of paddy submitted at the Nazareth direct procurement centre on April 11, 2025 were not accounted for and receipts were not issued.
Farmers further urged the reopening of the procurement centre at Cherakulam which had been closed for 20 days before the harvest season concluded. In addition, they requested that Krumeniyar river be linked with Thamirabarani river to ensure continuous flow of water for irrigation.
Responding to the petitions, Mr. Ealmbahavath reitrated that officials had already been instructed to resolve the petitions submitted during grievances meetings within seven days. However, as delays continue, he warned that strict action would be taken against those who fail to comply with the timeline.
He added that removal of Prosopis Juliflora (karuvelam) has already started in Vilathikulam and Pudur blocks and will soon begin in Kovilpatti. The Collector further ordered the RDOs to conduct an inspection of Nazareth, South Thiruperai and Peikulam procurement centres. 'If it is found that paddy was rejected on April 11, but later arrivals were accepted appropriate action will be taken against the staff,' he added.
Furthermore, Mr. Ealambahavath instructed the PWD officials to take farmers to the flood canal and explain the current water release mechanism.

The incident took place during the 14th session of public hearing of grievances by the Chief Minister on Monday. Senior ministers of his government, along with officials of the different departments, were present during the public grievance hearing. As per the official statement issued by the Chief Minister's Office, out of the 12,252 applications received, as many as 10,807 applications were resolved during the last 13 sessions of public hearing. With over 88 per cent of grievances resolved and Chief Minister Majhi's active efforts to address them, public trust in the state government has increased during the recent period. As in previous sessions, the Chief Minister first met with more than 40 physically handicapped and those suffering from serious illnesses at the grievance cell during the 14th session. He listened to their grievances and directed the authorities to take immediate steps to resolve them. Majhi instructed the secretaries of the concerned departments present during the hearing to take necessary actions on all the grievances received on Monday.

BJP demands detailed probe in Chandni Chowk irregularities case
A day after the Public Works Department (PWD) flagged irregularities in the Chandni Chowk redevelopment project, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday demanded that a larger probe be carried out in the case, also including the Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Corporation (SRDC). The 1.3-kilometre redeveloped stretch was inaugurated in 2021. (HT Archive) The party demanded the dissolution of the SRDC and a full audit of its 10 years of operations. 'The officers have always viewed Chandni Chowk only as a Mughal-era city, never understanding or appreciating its commercial identity. Ignoring reality, these officers have repeatedly proposed plans to develop Chandni Chowk as merely a tourist centre, often persuading chief ministers to approve impractical schemes,' Delhi BJP spokesperson and general secretary of Chandni Chowk Nagrik ManchPraveen Shankar Kapoor said. After coming to power in 2015, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government began formulating development and beautification projects for Chandni Chowk without understanding or consulting its residents and traders, Kapoor claimed. 'In 2018-19, despite opposition from local trade bodies and the Chandni Chowk Nagrik Manch, the then MLA Alka Lamba pushed the redevelopment project prepared by bureaucrats and had it implemented by the SRDC,' Kapoor added. The 1.3-kilometre redeveloped stretch, inaugurated in 2021 by the then CM Arvind Kejriwal, saw its project cost swell from an initial estimate of ₹65.6 crore to ₹145 crore. The PWD report claimed that the initial cost for civil and electrical works — estimated at ₹27.79 crore — escalated to ₹105.93 crore. Officials from the SRDC did not respond to HT's requests for a comment on the allegations.

Flyover to nowhere: Project stalls midway, land acquisition delay halts work
A ₹153-crore flyover between Para and Rajajipuram, aimed at easing traffic for over 5 lakh residents, has come to a standstill after only 168 metres of the 857.92-metre structure was built. The work stopped abruptly without a landing site on the Para side, as construction began before acquiring the required land. The flyover completion will reduce the journey from 30 minutes to 2 minutes. Once completed, the bridge is expected to cut travel time from 30 minutes to 2 minutes, providing significant relief. Approved in November 2023 and inaugurated in October 2024 by defence minister Rajnath Singh, the bridge was designed to connect Rajajipuram and Para over the Jalalpur railway line. Construction has been stalled since March 17, 2025, as 85 houses and shops stand in the way of the Para-side landing. Residents claim they have not received any official notice or compensation offers. Corporator of Malviya Nagar Para ward, Rekha Singh, said, 'The 85 families have not been served any notice, nor has the compensation for their properties been announced. The residents need compensation if they are to be displaced.' Officials of the UP State Bridge Corporation began construction on one end without securing land on the other. District authorities marked the affected properties but the public works department (PWD) did not finalise compensation, officials said. Meanwhile, project director of the corporation, Amit Verma, said, compensation negotiations were in the final stage, led by the district administration, after which land registry work would begin. Discussions were ongoing but no timeline had been given, even after four months of delay, according to executive engineer Satyendra Nath. He added that talks with landowners were ongoing and a solution was 'round the corner.' A district official said the land acquisition process under Section 11 had begun and would be completed within a month. The project is scheduled for completion by December 31, 2026.
