Thoothukudi Collector instructs officials to address farmers' grievances within seven days
Thoothukudi District Collector K. Elambahavath directed the officials to address the petitions submitted by farmers, within seven days. He issued this instruction during the farmers' grievances redress meeting held at the Collectorate on Thursday.
They said that multiple irrigation tanks in the district, including Kadambankulam and Pannaiyarkulam in Sathankulam region, have not received water from Manimuthar 3rd reach canal, resulting in severe drought conditions in the area. The farmers also demanded distribution of subsidised seeds for cotton, maize and sunflower.
Additionally, the farmers alleged that officials are demanding bribes for issuing free housing pattas and called for strict actions against those involved.
The farmers' associations suggested that the 'Thangai' tank in Venkataramanujapuram be brought under the control of PWD for effective water management. The tank currently irrigates around 57 hectares of agricultural land in the region.
They added that many bags of paddy submitted at the Nazareth direct procurement centre on April 11, 2025 were not accounted for and receipts were not issued.
Farmers further urged the reopening of the procurement centre at Cherakulam which had been closed for 20 days before the harvest season concluded. In addition, they requested that Krumeniyar river be linked with Thamirabarani river to ensure continuous flow of water for irrigation.
Responding to the petitions, Mr. Ealmbahavath reitrated that officials had already been instructed to resolve the petitions submitted during grievances meetings within seven days. However, as delays continue, he warned that strict action would be taken against those who fail to comply with the timeline.
He added that removal of Prosopis Juliflora (karuvelam) has already started in Vilathikulam and Pudur blocks and will soon begin in Kovilpatti. The Collector further ordered the RDOs to conduct an inspection of Nazareth, South Thiruperai and Peikulam procurement centres. 'If it is found that paddy was rejected on April 11, but later arrivals were accepted appropriate action will be taken against the staff,' he added.
Furthermore, Mr. Ealambahavath instructed the PWD officials to take farmers to the flood canal and explain the current water release mechanism.

Union minister of state for railways and food processing industries Ravneet Singh Bittu has said that he would confront Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann if the state government fails to grant a no-objection certificate (NOC) in 48 hours for the long-delayed railway overbridge (ROB) on the Doraha–Sahnewal stretch in Ludhiana. While addressing a public meeting amid the Ludhiana West by-election campaign in ward number 64, Rishi Nagar, Bittu accused the Punjab government of deliberately holding up the project. He alleged that the CM's office had been sitting on the file for over six months, refusing to issue the necessary NOC from the public works department (PWD). 'This overbridge is critical for easing traffic and ensuring connectivity. The Indian Railways is ready to fund the entire ₹70 crore required for its construction. Still, the Punjab government is refusing to cooperate,' Bittu said. 'Despite several letters and personal communication, the chief minister's office has not even acknowledged the correspondence.' Calling the delay an intentional obstruction, Bittu warned that if the NOC isn't cleared within the next two days, he will confront CM Bhagwant Mann directly in his residence or 'wherever he is'. 'These are not my works — they are the people's works. If he fails to act, I will go to him and ask why he is playing politics with Ludhiana's development,' he declared. Bittu accused the CM of promoting a misleading narrative on development. 'On stage, he talks about progress, but behind the scenes, he blocks critical projects supported by the Centre. These double standards will be exposed,' he said. He urged voters to back BJP candidate Jiwan Gupta in the Ludhiana West by-election, emphasising that only a BJP-led government can fast-track stalled infrastructure and ensure accountability. Bittu also cited the Modi government's decisive national security actions, including Operation Sindoor, as proof of strong leadership and vision. Calling the bypoll a test for Punjab's future, he appealed to party workers and residents to unite for victory, stating, 'This election is not just about one seat. It's about development, dignity, and the dream of a stronger India.'

Himachal: Vikramaditya Singh meets Rajnath Singh, urges to declare Ghatasni-Shilha-Badhani-Bhubujot- Kullu road as national highway
Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], June 10 (ANI): The Public Works Department (PWD) Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Vikramaditya Singh, called on Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi. He urged the declaration of the Ghatasni-Shilha-Badhani-Bhubujot-Kullu road as a National Highway, keeping in view its strategic significance. He said that there was an urgent need for an alternative connectivity to the Pathankot-Manali-Leh NH, and this road would not only serve the purpose but also shorten the distance by about 55 kilometres. 'It would also provide a stable highway besides boosting tourism and strengthening the rural economy,' he added. He urged Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to sanction the project. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh assured to provide all possible support to the state. Earlier, on May 19, the Public Works Department (PWD) Minister of the Himachal Pradesh government said that the department was all set to start the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) stage four once it was approved by the Union government. Vikramaditya Singh detailed Himachal Pradesh's progress under the PMGSY, highlighting key milestones achieved in road infrastructure in rural and remote areas of the state.'Our government made sustained efforts to strengthen the road network across Himachal, especially in remote and backwards regions where all-weather connectivity was crucial,' Singh said. He reported that under PMGSY-III, 3,100 kilometres of roads and 43 bridges had already been sanctioned, with projects spread across Mandi, Kangra, and Hamirpur districts.'We executed PMGSY-III projects worth Rs 345 crore. Our goal was to complete these within 18 months. Already Rs 802 crore had been spent, and by the end of 2024-25, Rs 650 crore more was expected to be utilised out of the Rs 905 crore budget,' he said. RCB stampede probe: Judicial commission gets 2 retired officers for assistance
Bengaluru: The state govt Monday appointed two retired civil service officers to provide technical and legal assistance to Justice John Michael D'Cunha, who heads the one-man judicial commission investigating the stampede near Chinnaswamy Stadium that left 11 people dead and 75 injured on June 4. NS Prasanna Kumar, a retired IAS officer, and MK Srivastav, a retired IPS officer, have been appointed to the commission. According to sources, Kumar retired from service in June 2020 and is currently an adviser to Karnataka Administrative Reforms Commission, while Srivastav retired in Feb 2011 as DGP. The govt notification on the matter stated a separate order would be issued regarding their salary. The commission has one month to investigate the stampede and submit a report to the state govt. Justice D'Cunha is already heading a commission investigating two sensitive cases — the alleged Covid-era medical procurement scam and deaths of patients due to suspected oxygen shortage at the Chamarajanagar district hospital. But following the stampede, the govt launched a three-pronged investigation — judicial, magisterial, and CID, which took over the criminal probe Friday evening from Cubbon Park police. The Bengaluru Urban deputy commissioner is heading the magisterial probe. The D'Cunha commission was formed on June 5, a day after the tragedy. The govt has instructed the DGP, Bengaluru city police commissioner, and Bengaluru Urban DC to provide files and documents for investigation by the commission. PWD min to review KSCA land lease With CM Siddaramaiah stating he would "examine" the possibility of shifting Chinnaswamy Stadium to the outskirts of Bengaluru, public works minister Satish Jarkiholi has sought the file related to the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) lease agreement on the land. "KSCA pays Rs 19,000 a year for the land, and it has been renewed twice already for 30 years each. I've asked for the file, to check when their lease ends," said Jarkiholi. It may be recalled that 13 years ago, PWD had calculated a revised estimate of the annual rent — Rs 78.7 crore — based on the guidance value at the time. The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) had also pulled up the govt 20 years ago for failing to collect the market value rent from KSCA and had estimated it had foregone as much as Rs 203 crore in revenue back then.
