Flyover to nowhere: Project stalls midway, land acquisition delay halts work
The incomplete flyover is forcing residents to travel 4 km extra every day, often getting stuck at railway crossings. Once completed, the bridge is expected to cut travel time from 30 minutes to 2 minutes, providing significant relief.
Approved in November 2023 and inaugurated in October 2024 by defence minister Rajnath Singh, the bridge was designed to connect Rajajipuram and Para over the Jalalpur railway line. Construction has been stalled since March 17, 2025, as 85 houses and shops stand in the way of the Para-side landing. Residents claim they have not received any official notice or compensation offers.
Corporator of Malviya Nagar Para ward, Rekha Singh, said, 'The 85 families have not been served any notice, nor has the compensation for their properties been announced. The residents need compensation if they are to be displaced.'
Officials of the UP State Bridge Corporation began construction on one end without securing land on the other. District authorities marked the affected properties but the public works department (PWD) did not finalise compensation, officials said.
Meanwhile, project director of the corporation, Amit Verma, said, compensation negotiations were in the final stage, led by the district administration, after which land registry work would begin.
Discussions were ongoing but no timeline had been given, even after four months of delay, according to executive engineer Satyendra Nath. He added that talks with landowners were ongoing and a solution was 'round the corner.'
A district official said the land acquisition process under Section 11 had begun and would be completed within a month. The project is scheduled for completion by December 31, 2026.

India, China to resume direct flights soon amid push to reset tense ties, airlines told to start preparations
India and China are set to resume direct flights as soon as September, as the two countries seek to reset political ties after years of tensions, sources have said. IndiGo has reportedly already been asked to begin preparing flights to China. (PTI) The Indian government has reportedly asked airlines in the country to prepare flights to China at short notice, with an official announcement likely as soon as the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit at the end of this month in China. Direct flights between India and China were halted after the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, forcing travellers to travel via hopping flights through hubs like Hong Kong or Singapore. Diplomatic relations of the two Asian heavyweights also hit a new low in June 2020, when border clashes erupted in eastern Ladakh's Galwan Valley. The clashes led to the deaths of 20 Indian soldiers and at least four Chinese personnel. Against the backdrop of the clashes, New Delhi took a series of measures against Beijing, including a ban on 59 Chinese mobile applications. China termed the ban 'discriminatory' and considered taking the issue to the World Trade Organization. Last month, India announced the resumption of tourist visas for Chinese nationals, marking a step towards the normalisation of bilateral ties that hit their lowest point following the military standoff on the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Committee members recommended that sports associations be allowed to display sponsor branding free of cost within sports complexes to facilitate the organisation of national and international events, noting that most associations rely heavily on sponsorships. The joint director sports informed that a policy on this is under active consideration and will be finalised soon. He also stated that work is underway on a policy to provide Group 'A' and Group 'B' government jobs to meritorious sportspersons. The committee also commended the newly renovated conference hall at the sports complex, where the meeting was held. The chairman suggested that sports associations be allowed to book the facility for meetings at nominal charges fixed by the department.
