Flyover to nowhere: Project stalls midway, land acquisition delay halts work

Hindustan Times2 days ago
A ₹153-crore flyover between Para and Rajajipuram, aimed at easing traffic for over 5 lakh residents, has come to a standstill after only 168 metres of the 857.92-metre structure was built. The work stopped abruptly without a landing site on the Para side, as construction began before acquiring the required land. The flyover completion will reduce the journey from 30 minutes to 2 minutes. (Mushtaq Ali/HT Photo)
The incomplete flyover is forcing residents to travel 4 km extra every day, often getting stuck at railway crossings. Once completed, the bridge is expected to cut travel time from 30 minutes to 2 minutes, providing significant relief.
Approved in November 2023 and inaugurated in October 2024 by defence minister Rajnath Singh, the bridge was designed to connect Rajajipuram and Para over the Jalalpur railway line. Construction has been stalled since March 17, 2025, as 85 houses and shops stand in the way of the Para-side landing. Residents claim they have not received any official notice or compensation offers.
Corporator of Malviya Nagar Para ward, Rekha Singh, said, 'The 85 families have not been served any notice, nor has the compensation for their properties been announced. The residents need compensation if they are to be displaced.'
Officials of the UP State Bridge Corporation began construction on one end without securing land on the other. District authorities marked the affected properties but the public works department (PWD) did not finalise compensation, officials said.
Meanwhile, project director of the corporation, Amit Verma, said, compensation negotiations were in the final stage, led by the district administration, after which land registry work would begin.
Discussions were ongoing but no timeline had been given, even after four months of delay, according to executive engineer Satyendra Nath. He added that talks with landowners were ongoing and a solution was 'round the corner.'
A district official said the land acquisition process under Section 11 had begun and would be completed within a month. The project is scheduled for completion by December 31, 2026.

Speaker seeks probe into road damage

Mangaluru: Speaker UT Khader, who is also the MLA representing the Mangaluru constituency, wrote to PWD minister Satish Jarkiholi and the PWD principal secretary for immediate repairs of the roads that were damaged in his constituency following heavy rainfall. In a letter to the minister and department principal secretary, Khader stated that the road stretch from Chembugudde to Kuthar, connecting Thokkotu, was laid three years ago. However, large portions of the surface of the road deteriorated, making it unfit for smooth vehicular movement. Khader demanded a probe into the damage to the road within three years and sought action against lapses. Seeking immediate repairs to restore the road for public use, the speaker directed the department to initiate action in case of any lapses in the work. "Conduct an investigation to find the reason for the deterioration of the road in my constituency. Take appropriate action if any lapses are found," Khader directed. He said the PWD was upgrading the state highway from Thokkotu to Mudipu in Ullal taluk into a two-lane road. This stretch serves as a crucial link connecting several educational institutions, the Ullal taluk office, and multiple schools and colleges, he added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The 5 Books Warren Buffett Recommends You To Read in 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo In a related development, the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) Ullal taluk committee held a protest on Monday, accusing the authorities concerned of damage to the road from Thokkotu to Kuthar. India, China to resume direct flights soon amid push to reset tense ties, airlines told to start preparations

India and China are set to resume direct flights as soon as September, as the two countries seek to reset political ties after years of tensions, sources have said. IndiGo has reportedly already been asked to begin preparing flights to China. (PTI) The Indian government has reportedly asked airlines in the country to prepare flights to China at short notice, with an official announcement likely as soon as the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit at the end of this month in China. IndiGo has already been asked to begin preparations, sources told HT. Direct flights between India and China were halted after the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, forcing travellers to travel via hopping flights through hubs like Hong Kong or Singapore. Diplomatic relations of the two Asian heavyweights also hit a new low in June 2020, when border clashes erupted in eastern Ladakh's Galwan Valley. The clashes led to the deaths of 20 Indian soldiers and at least four Chinese personnel. Against the backdrop of the clashes, New Delhi took a series of measures against Beijing, including a ban on 59 Chinese mobile applications. China termed the ban 'discriminatory' and considered taking the issue to the World Trade Organization. Last month, India announced the resumption of tourist visas for Chinese nationals, marking a step towards the normalisation of bilateral ties that hit their lowest point following the military standoff on the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Before the suspension, Indian airlines, including Air India and IndiGo, used to operate direct flights between key cities of the two countries. Over a dozen direct flights were being operated every week, connecting cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Kunming with New Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata. Chinese airlines such as Air China, China Southern and China Eastern also used to run direct services. India and China first agreed in principle to resume direct flights in January this year. The countries also agreed to promote and facilitate people-to-people contacts, especially between media and think tanks. The decision, taken at the meeting between foreign secretary Vikram Misri and Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi, also included the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, which had been stopped since 2020. India-China ties heading for revival? Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit China for the first time in seven years to attend the SCO Summit, scheduled to be held in Tianjin on August 31 and September 1. China welcomed PM Modi's expected visit. Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said, "We believe that with the concerted effort of all parties, the Tianjin summit will be a gathering of solidarity, friendship and fruitful results, and the SCO will enter a new stage of high-quality development featuring greater solidarity, coordination, dynamism and productiveness.' HT reported that the Prime Minister's visit will also set up the possibility of a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The renewed push to resume direct flights and improve bilateral ties between the two Asian countries comes against the backdrop of heightened tensions over US President Donald Trump's tariffs on India, which he doubled from 25 per cent to 50 per cent due to New Delhi's oil purchase from Russia. China voiced support for India as Chinese Ambassador Xu Feihong publicly called Trump a 'bully' and warned India that 'give the bully an inch, he will take a mile,' urging New Delhi not to yield to US trade pressure. China and the US were also engaged in a tit-for-tat battle over Trump's reciprocal tariffs, raising the levies on each other. However, Trump on Monday announced a postponement of the planned tariff hikes on Chinese goods, extending the deadline for another 90 days. (with inputs from Bloomberg)

Upgrade works are also in progress at the Basketball Hall in Sector 42, the hockey stadiums in Sectors 42 and 18, and the sports infrastructure at Lake Sports Complex, with the aim of meeting national standards and enabling the city to host more national-level competitions. An online portal for cash awards to sportspersons has been developed and will be launched on National Sports Day, August 29. A dedicated sports policy for specially abled sportspersons has been prepared and will be rolled out shortly. Committee members recommended that sports associations be allowed to display sponsor branding free of cost within sports complexes to facilitate the organisation of national and international events, noting that most associations rely heavily on sponsorships. The joint director sports informed that a policy on this is under active consideration and will be finalised soon. He also stated that work is underway on a policy to provide Group 'A' and Group 'B' government jobs to meritorious sportspersons. The committee also commended the newly renovated conference hall at the sports complex, where the meeting was held.
