UNAOC Representative: Empowering Religious Leaders to Harness Technology to Combat Hatred Is Essential
In his recorded address at the opening session of the 10th International Fatwa Conference, Miguel Moratinos, UN High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations, highlighted that artificial intelligence and digital technologies present valuable opportunities to foster peace, moderation, and interfaith dialogue.
However, he cautioned that these tools can also be misused to incite hatred. Moratinos called for empowering religious leaders to effectively leverage technology in countering extremism and hate speech, underscoring the importance of adopting ethical frameworks that safeguard human rights.
He also affirmed the United Nations' full support for the conference's mission to strengthen the capacity of fatwa institutions in the age of artificial intelligence.

DR Congo army accuses M23 of 'multiple attacks' despite ceasefire deal - Africa
The Congolese army accused the Rwanda-backed M23 militia on Tuesday of "multiple attacks" on its positions in the east, where several days of fighting have threatened a US-brokered ceasefire deal. The eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, a region bordering Rwanda with abundant natural resources but plagued by non-state armed groups, has suffered extreme violence for more than three decades. Since taking up arms again at the end of 2021 the M23 armed group has seized swathes of land in the restive region with Rwanda's backing, triggering a spiralling humanitarian crisis. A fresh surge of unrest broke out early this year when the M23 captured the key cities of Goma and Bukavu, setting up their own administrations. The Congolese government and the M23 signed a declaration of principles on July 19 in Qatar that included a "permanent ceasefire" aimed at halting the conflict. It followed a separate peace deal between the Congolese and Rwandan governments signed in Washington the previous month. But violence has continued on the ground, with fighting becoming more intense since Friday around the town of Mulamba in South Kivu province, where the front line had been relatively stable since March. The M23 attacked positions between held by pro-Kinshasa militia and army forces and pushed them back several kilometres, local and security sources said. The "almost daily" attacks constitute an "intentional and manifest violation" of the Washington peace deal and the declaration of principles agreed in Doha, Congolese army spokesman Sylvain Ekenge said in a statement. The army said it was ready to respond "to all provocations from this coalition, accustomed to violating agreements". M23 spokesman Lawrence Kanyuka said in a post on X on Monday that the DRC's government was continuing "offensive military manoeuvres aimed at full-scale war". Rwanda denials After a lull in the morning, fighting resumed in Mulamba on Tuesday afternoon, according to local sources. Both sides had rushed reinforcements to the territory on Sunday, the sources added. Any breakthrough by the M23 in the mountainous region would give the armed group control of many mining sites, most of them gold and run by Chinese businesses. Neither side has provided a toll from the clashes. Dozens of ceasefires and truces have been brokered and broken in recent years without providing a lasting end to the conflict. At the beginning of August, UN human rights chief Volker Turk accused the M23 of having killed at least 319 civilians in July, insisting the fighters were "backed by members" of the Rwandan army. Rwanda on Monday branded the UN's accusations its army had helped kill civilians "unacceptable". Kigali has consistently denied proving the M23 military support. A report from UN experts in July however found that Rwanda's army played a "critical" role in the M23's conquest of Goma and Bukavu, capital of the North and South Kivu provinces respectively. More than two million people have fled the violence in both North and South Kivu since the beginning of 2025, according to a late July report from the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. Rwanda has long maintained that it faces an existential threat from the FDLR, a militia founded in the Congolese east by ethnic Hutu leaders involved in the 1994 Rwandan genocide of Tutsis. US, Jordan offer Syria support in upholding Sweida ceasefire - Region
Syrian and Jordanian foreign ministers and a US envoy agreed on Tuesday to form a working group to help Damascus uphold a ceasefire in Sweida province, rocked by recent sectarian clashes. In a joint statement issued after a meeting in Amman, Jordan and the United States said they "agreed to respond to the Syrian government's request to establish a trilateral working group (Syrian-Jordanian-American) to support the Syrian government's efforts to consolidate the ceasefire" in Sweida and "resolve the crisis" there. They also agreed to hold another meeting in the coming weeks. The Syrian foreign ministry said its top diplomat Asaad al-Shaibani met with Jordan's Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and US envoy for Syria Tom Barrack to discuss "ways of strengthening cooperation and coordination between the three sides" in order to serve Syria's stability, "sovereignty and regional security". Damascus said the sides had agreed to form a working group "to support the Syrian government's efforts to consolidate the ceasefire in Sweida province, and work to find a comprehensive solution to the crisis". The meeting on Tuesday was a continuation of discussions held between the officials in Amman on July 19 about deadly clashes in the Druze-majority Syrian province of Sweida, where a week of sectarian violence killed 1,400 people before a ceasefire put an end to the bloodshed. Syria's minority communities have expressed concerns for their safety since December, when an Islamist-led offensive toppled longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad, who had presented himself as a protector of minorities. While the new Syrian authorities have repeatedly stated their intent to protect all of the country's ethnic and religious groups, the killing of more than 1,700 mostly Alawite civilians along the coast in March and the violence in Sweida have raised doubts about their ability to manage sectarian tensions. Barrack, in a post on X, described the talks on Tuesday as "productive", adding that the Syrian government had "pledged to utilise all resources to hold perpetrators of the Suwayda atrocities accountable," using an alternative transliteration of the province's name. "Syria will fully cooperate with the UN to investigate these crimes, including the horrific violence at Suwayda National Hospital", he added. Syria remains steadfastly committed to a united process that honors and protects all its constituencies, fostering a shared future for the Syrian people despite intervening forces seeking to disrupt and displace its communities. It noted "the importance of Washington's role in supporting the reconstruction process in Syria in a manner that preserves the rights of all Syrians". The king also said Jordan was ready "to share its expertise in all fields to help develop and strengthen the capabilities of Syrian institutions" and "noted the need to step up Jordanian-Syrian cooperation, particularly in combating terrorism and preventing arms and drug smuggling", the statement added. According to the Syrian statement, the foreign ministers' meeting welcomed Damascus's efforts to "restore basic services, hold perpetrators of violations to account, and prepare the conditions for the return of displaced people to their homes".
