NEET UG Counselling 2025: MCC puts round 1 choice filing, locking facility on hold
According to the revised NEET UG counselling schedule for 2025, candidates were required to submit and lock their choices by August 4. The round 1 seat allotment results were initially set to be released on August 6. However, the schedule was extended to accommodate Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD), who had requested additional time to obtain their certificates from designated centres.
In addition, the counselling committee had advised all participating institutions under the All India Quota (AIQ)—including central universities, deemed universities, AIIMS, and BSc nursing colleges involved in the NEET UG 2025 counselling for MBBS, BDS, and BSc Nursing programmes — to verify the accuracy of the tentative vacancies listed in the MCC seat matrix.
Meanwhile, the Committee (MCC) has approved the conversion of 188 candidates from Indian to NRI status for the NEET UG 2025 counselling process. These candidates were required to submit their scanned documents to MCC via email at ug.nri.mcc@gmail.com, no later than August 3, 2025. The list of NRI candidates was compiled following a thorough review of documents submitted by applicants, ensuring compliance with the eligibility criteria set by MCC.
Additionally, despite a significant 39 per cent increase in MBBS seats over the past few years, a considerable number of undergraduate medical seats remain vacant across India, data from the National Medical Commission (NMC) reveals. The data was presented in the Lok Sabha on August 1 by Anupriya Patel, Minister of State in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The unstarred question was asked by a member of the Telugu Desam Party, Putta Mahesh Kumar.
The number of MBBS seats rose from 83,275 in 2020–21 to 1,15,900 by 2024–25; however, the number of vacant UG seats (excluding AIIMS and JIPMER) peaked at 4,146 in 2022–23, before witnessing a gradual decline to 2,849 in 2024–25.

If the DD is submitted, original documents must be deposited within five days to avoid cancellation. Candidates allocated a different AIIMS in the 2nd round from the 1st round must report to the new institute. Documents/DDs will be transferred internally by AIIMS. Failure to accept the allotted seat by 5:00 PM on August 14, 2025, will be treated as a refusal. National Medical Register ID registration voluntary, says Union Minister Anupriya Patel
In a relief to doctors across the country protesting against the cumbersome registration process with the National Medical Register (NMR), Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Anupriya Patel informed the Lok Sabha recently that application for issuance of an NMR Identification (ID) is voluntary. She was responding to a question from MP Aditya Yadav on whether the government had taken cognisance of the fact that, as of May 1, 2025, less than 1% of doctors had registered with the NMR eight months after its launch. The NMR is a centralised database of registered medical practitioners in modern medicine, maintained by the National Medical Commission (NMC). It contains information on each practitioner, including qualification, area of specialisation (in process), registration status, and date of registration, and assigns a unique identification number called the NMR ID. Launched in August 2024 under Section 31 of the NMC Act, 2019, the register was introduced as a mandatory exercise for all registered medical practitioners. It aims to eliminate duplication and enable the public to access information on any doctor working in India. Each doctor's record is linked to their Aadhaar ID for verification, with some data made public while sensitive information is restricted to specified individuals and institutions. State Medical Councils (SMCs) are responsible for verifying degrees and facilitating the process, with the portal dynamically updated for transparency and governance. Explaining the process, Ms. Patel said that under the Standing Operating Procedure (SOP), an applicant applies through the NMR portal. The application is first sent to the SMC where the doctor was initially registered, and after credential verification, it is forwarded to the NMC. Following further checks, the NMR ID is generated. She added that the NMC has written to all SMCs to 'put in extra efforts' to complete the registration. As per NMC data, there are 13,86,150 registered allopathic doctors in India. According to information obtained under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, the NMC had received 10,411 applications till April 24 this year. The RTI reply, dated April 29, stated that 10,237 applications had not been approved, including 139 in which queries had been raised.
