Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's how the pursuit of Aaron Rodgers fits into the Steelers' big-picture offseason plans. The Steelers came into the offseason without an answer at the quarterback position, which is largely what has held the team back compared to the best of the AFC over the last few season. After an early survey of the landscape, Steelers general manager Omar Khan correctly assessed that there was not a long-term franchise quarterback available to the team this offseason. So Khan turned to the future, using the team's rare situation with departing free agents to line up a haul of compensatory picks that will give Khan the ammunition he needs to trade up for a quarterback in the 2026 NFL Draft. So why the pursuit of Rodgers? Because the team is still trying to win. They were a good team in 2024, and had a great defense. They can probably be that or better with slightly better quarterback play in 2025, and while Rodgers is certainly not a long-term answer, he could possibly provide that for one season. The entire reason the team was selective about how they spent their free agent money this offseason was to maximize those 2026 comp picks and ensure that they'll be able to get the quarterback they want in 2026, no matter what happens on the field this year, and once that process was put in place, they're just trying to put the best team on the field they can for 2025. Pittsburgh Steelers rookie running back Kaleb Johnson sends a warning to those who are doubting his speed. PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers third-round rookie running back Kaleb Johnson fell down draft boards after running a 4.57-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine. He's heard the noise and has a warning for those who want to continue doubting his speed. Advertisement 'My catching ability, my route running, really my speed,' Johnson said of what goes unnoticed in his game. 'Last time I checked, I hit 22 miles per hour.' Johnson is a bigger back, standing at 6-foot-1, 224 pounds. But he has proven to be more than capable of breaking off big runs during his three years at Iowa. Last season, he reached 22 miles per hour per GPS measurements on field, which translates to a 40-yard dash in the 4.3s. Only a handful of NFL players have hit 22 mph, including new Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf, and nobody is questioning his speed. Johnson has the production to back it up, too. He had a breakout season in 2024, rushing for a career-high 1,537 yards (6.4 yards per carry) and 21 touchdowns. He also recorded 22 catches for 188 yards and two more scores. It all began on Thursday when Adam Schefter reported that the Pittsburgh Steelers were showing interest in a trade for Miami Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith. Advertisement "The Dolphins have had trade discussions with the Pittsburgh Steelers about their lone Pro-Bowl selection last season, tight end Jonnu Smith, per league sources," Schefter wrote on Twitter. "Those talks came after Smith expressed an interest in reworking his deal that is scheduled to pay him $4.8 million this season. With Smith seeking a new contract, Miami has sought a trade partner." Then, on Monday, we heard reports from Steelers insider Mark Kaboly that Pittsburgh definitely wasn't. "They are not interested in him," Kaboly said during an appearance on 93.7 The Fan. Now, just a day later, and regardless of what Kaboly said a day ago, Schefter reported that talks are back on between Miami and the Steelers. The reported trade interest makes a little bit of sense because there is a link between Smith and the Steelers, as offensive coordinator Arthur Smith coached the former FIU tight end while with the Tennessee Titans. Advertisement Smith will enter his ninth year in the league next season and he's posted 307 receptions for 3,307 yards and 28 touchdowns. Last season, he posted career highs with 88 catches and 884 yards while tying his career-best eight touchdowns. He also made his first Pro Bowl. Smith reportedly wants more money and is seeking a trade. Pittsburgh has also reportedly shown interest in Tampa Bay Buccaneers wideout Trey Palmer.
