DAVID Tennant's turn as a game show host has ended in disaster - after his flop The Genius Game got the same viewing figures as a BBC2 show about pangolins.
The reality game show hosted by the Scots actor is believed to have cost ITV £2.5million to make but drew an average audience of just 661,000 - matched by Pangolins: The World's Most Wanted Animal.

Johnny Beattie was a cult hit as a game show host. Still Game's Ford Kiernan wanted to host a reboot.
However David, 54, isn't the only actor to have made the surprise career choice of hosting a telly quiz.
JOHNNY BEATTIE - HIT
THE legendary Scot started his showbiz career as a comic but was actually renowned for his serious acting roles - appearing alongside Liam Neeson in the 1990 film The Big Man.
Johnny, who passed away in 2020 aged 93, also played a baddie in Taggart and was popular as River City OAP Malcolm Hamilton which he played from 2002 until 2015.
But Johnny also hosted the STV gameshow Now You See It from 1981-1984, which Still Game creator Ford Kiernan loved so much he tried to bring, saying: 'I approached STV but it turned out some Dutch company owned the rights.'
NICHOLAS PARSONS - HIT

Nicholas, who died in 2020 aged 96, stayed in Glasgow throughout World War II, where he won a radio talent contest before going on to appear in a series of 1950s films including Upstairs and Downstairs and Too Many Crooks.
But he became a national treasure as the genial host of ITV's Sale of the Century, and for over 50 years also chaired the comedy panel game show Just A Minute, in which contestants must avoid hesitation, repetition or deviation.
RICHARD O'BRIEN - FLOP
6
Richard O'Brien's unconventional was a miss with viewers.
RICHARD O'Brien is probably best known for writing the musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show which in starred in as the sinister handyman Riff Raff.
But the 83 year old English actor made the leap to quiz show host in 1990 when he took the helm of Channel 4's The Crystal Maze.
His sarcastic put-downs and random harmonica playing saw the show reach a peak audience of seven million viewers in 1993, but two years later it was cancelled.
BRADLEY WALSH - HIT
BRADLEY is another who took the comedy route to acting where he went on to star as Danny Baldwin in Coronation Street for two years from 2004.
He also appeared as copper DS Ronnie Brooks in Law & Order: UK for five years from 2009 and was a regular in Doctor Who.
But Bradley, 65, has carved out a niche as one of the most in demand game show hosts starting with Wheel of Fortune in 1997 then Odd One In (2010–2011), Keep It in the Family (2014–2015), Cash Trapped (2016–2019), and Blankety Blank and The Chase which he still presents to this day.
PADDY MCGUINNESS - FLOP

But Paddy, 51, has concentrated on presenting work since then hosting the ITV date game show Take Me Out from 2010 to 2019 and hosting Tempting Fortune for the last two years.
However, taking over the BBC longest running quiz show A Question Of Sport in 2021 from Sue Barker saw ratings plummet from four million to one million, before the telly chiefs pulled the plug for good.
ALEXANDER ARMSTRONG - HIT
THE English actor made his name as one half of the comedy duo Armstrong and Miller with Ben Miller after the pair were snapped up for telly after a successful Edinburgh Festival run in the 1990s.
But Alexander continues to have a string of acting credits to his name including Doctor Who and playing an alien supercomputer in Time Lord's spin-off series The Sarah Jane Adventures.
However these days the 55 year old is probably best known as the host of Pointless, which debuted on BBC Two in 2009 before moving to BBC One in 2011 and is still on screen to this day along with the spin-off Pointless Celebrities.

Paul Gascoigne leaves hospital and 'doing well' at home as health issue becomes clear

Paul Gascoigne has been discharged from hospital after a scary incident in his home on Friday night, but the 58-year-old ex-footballer is still recovering from the problem Paul Gascoigne has returned home from hospital but is still 'very poorly', according to a close friend. Gascoigne was admitted to hospital on Friday after collapsing at home in Poole, Dorset. The 58-year-old ex-footballer was discovered semi-conscious in his bedroom and was rushed to A&E. He was kept in hospital over the weekend and was understood to have been in a stable condition. Having initially been put in intensive care, he was recovering in an acute ward. Thankfully Gazza is now doing better, with his management telling ITV that he went to hospital "after struggling with a throat condition he has had for a while" and is "back home and doing well". 'Paul voluntarily went into A&E on Friday after struggling with a throat condition he has had for a while,' Carly Saward at the MNT talent agency told the Associated Press too. 'He is already back home and doing well.' Meanwhile, his friend and personal assistant Steve Foster – who found him on Friday – has been visiting Gazza every day and told The Sun: 'Paul is stable now but is still very poorly. 'But it shows how popular and loved he still is by fans everywhere. I can't walk down the street with him without him being stopped – it's crazy.' Gazza has battled with alcoholism and addiction throughout his life, but has been in better shape recently. "He has told friends that he is fine and was going to give an update later today," a source close to the star told The Mirror earlier on Monday. "He has been doing well recently so this was an unexpected setback. 'He had a full three months without alcohol over the summer while he was doing various speaking engagements and looked really well." Gazza won 57 caps for England and played for Newcastle, Tottenham, Lazio, Rangers, Middlesbrough and Everton during a distinguished career. But his struggles off the pitch have sadly taken over his life in recent years. Speaking on the High Performance podcast in March 2024, he said: 'I used to be a happy drunk, I ain't any more … I'm a sad drunk. I don't go out and drink, I drink indoors. If I want to make it a bad day, [all I need to do is] go down the pub. If I want it to be a good day, I get my flying rod out and go fishing. 'It's not the drinking, it's the afterwards. Looking at my phone after and seeing 30 messages or missed calls, I know I'm in trouble. But I've been all right. Last year wasn't brilliant, was off and on for a couple of months.' Gascoigne added: 'I try not to get down because the world 's already down enough and when I'm really down, that's when I pick up a drink to cheer myself up. I don't think I let any managers down, or the players or the fans, you know. If there was anyone I let down, it was myself. But more the drinking side of it, when I finished playing.'

Pregnant Katherine Ryan 'dejected' at the thought of her baby being a boy

Pregnant comedian Katherine Ryan isn't exactly thrilled about the prospect of having a baby boy. The Canadian star, 42, is currently expecting her fourth child. She is already a proud mum of 16-year-old Violet and her children with Bobby Kootstra: son Fred, four, and daughter Fenna, two. However, she'd seemingly much prefer adding another girl to her brood, having already confirmed that baby number four will be her last. In an appearance on Heart Radio's breakfast show this morning, she confessed to hosts Jamie Theakston and Zoe Hardman that she's been 'antagonised' by men throughout her life. She also joked about youngest Fred being a 'toxic male'. Katherine, who confirmed her pregnancy last month, began: 'I have to say that I can't ever complain post-first trimester. 'I'm quite big, so I think it might be a boy, so I'm feeling dejected about that, because men have just antagonised me all my life, even before they're born.' After welcoming her kids thus far in the order of 'girl, boy, girl,' Katherine said she never finds out her baby's sex beforehand. 'It's always a surprise, and I love that. It's vintage', she stated. The Duchess star then declared that she will inevitably suffer 'gender disappointment' if her little one arrives as a boy. 'I will have it (gender disappointment) this time if it's a boy. You know what it is, my son is a toxic male; he's four years old, and he always wants to fight me,' she shared. Katherine recalled: 'I drove him to nursery the other day; he sat behind me, and he had a sword held to my throat for a while. 'Like, who's giving you weapons?' 'I didn't grow up with brothers, so it's been an adjustment for me,' she admitted. But don't worry, it's all in jest—in true Katherine style, of course—as she assured listeners: 'But I love him; he's a very special guy.' At the end of June, Katherine revealed that she kept her second pregnancy secret out of fear of losing work. She was presenting Ready to Mingle on ITV at the time and was eight months pregnant, which nobody knew. Katherine claimed that she would be unable to get insured during the project if she were pregnant. In an interview with The Sun, she said: 'During my pregnancy, I wasn't telling anyone. You can't get insured on any production if you are pregnant. Sometimes, if you are important enough, they go the extra mile. You see Holly Willoughby pregnant and that's because she's worth it. 'I tried to keep it secret. People just thought I was really fat for ages. I had to keep it quiet. I still needed to work to feed my family.' Katherine added that she didn't want to 'let down a production' if she encountered any complications during pregnancy. The beloved 8 Out of 10 Cats comic has been open about her fertility struggles in the past, having suffered three devastating miscarriages over the span of five years. 'I'm old. I used to think I was going to be the babies' dad because I'm working, but actually I'm like their grandmother,' she told OK! Magazine last November. 'My back hurts; sometimes I give them treats. I'm like a fun grandma.' The beloved stand-up star, who frequently uses the ups and downs of parenting for material in her routines, admitted that she'd been deterred from expanding her family after learning the shocking statistics about pregnancy. More Trending 'We've always gotten pregnant with the babies quite quickly. I've been pregnant five times in five years, but that also means I've had three miscarriages in five years,' she said, adding that the likelihood of miscarriage increases as a woman gets older. 'You have to find a balance between what you can personally stand and risks you're willing to take.' When confirming that she won't be having any more kids now, she told the Telling Everyone Everything podcast that while she 'loves making people' with partner Bobby, she believes it would be 'almost irresponsible to the children that [they] have and to [themselves]' should they continue.
