PKR election: Up to Nurul Izzah, Rafizi to decide on debate, says Saifuddin
PUTRAJAYA: Pakatan Harapan secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail is leaving it to the two Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) deputy presidential candidates on whether they want to continue with the debate or not in their campaign series for the 2025-2028 party election.
"Both are well-known figures, and both are assets to the party. Party members know and are aware of both parties' track records.
'So it depends on the candidates to accept or reject a debate," he said at a press conference after presenting the Immigration Department's Outstanding Service Award on Friday (May 16).
When asked to comment on Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli's offer to debate PKR vice president Nurul Izzah Anwar for the PKR deputy president post, Saifuddin said that debates were only one of many campaigning methods.
"It was an offer, not a compulsion," he said.
Nurul Izzah had earlier rejected Rafizi's invitation to the debate.
The contest for the deputy president post is a straight fight between Rafizi and Nurul Izzah, while Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim retained the president's position unopposed.
For the vice president position, 12 members have submitted their respective nominations including four incumbents, namely Nik Nazmi Nik Mat (Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability), Chang Lih Kang (Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation), Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun (Menteri Besar of Negeri Sembilan) and Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari (Menteri Besar of Selangor).
The political secretary to Finance Minister Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim won the head of the youth wing, Angkatan Muda Keadilan (AMK), unchallenged, while Fadhlina Sidek (Education Minister) and Rodziah Ismail (Ampang Member of Parliament) are vying for the position of PKR Wanita chief.
The PKR National Congress, including the AMK and Wanita Congress, is scheduled to be held from May 22 to 24 in Johor Bahru, Johor, with the voting for the central leadership set for May 23.

HAWANA 2025 Set for Launch with PM Anwar at WTCKL
KUALA LUMPUR: Preparations for the National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) 2025 main event at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) are progressing smoothly, with final touches underway to ensure a seamless programme tomorrow. Also present was Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, who is also HAWANA 2025 project director. Mano expressed hope that the cooperation between Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), Bernama and other media agencies in organising HAWANA will continue in future editions. At tomorrow's main event, the Prime Minister will present the HAWANA 2025 Special Award and the HAWANA 2025 Award, as well as contributions under the Kasih@HAWANA Fund to three media practitioners. He will also present prizes to the winners of the HAWANA-DBP 2025 Pantun Festival, which was held on May 31. Earlier in the morning, the HAWANA 2025 Forum will take place at Dewan Tun Hussein Onn, titled 'Malaysian Media Council: Regulator or Media Protector?', which will be followed by a sharing session on 'AI & Media: Tool, Threat or Opportunity?'. Meanwhile, the HAWANA 2025 Carnival at the Sunway Putra Mall concourse is targeting 5,000 visitors, featuring 20 exhibition booths by major media agencies, government departments and private sector participants, including Bernama, RTM, Astro, Media Prima Berhad, the Information Department, and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission. Held under the theme 'Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics,' HAWANA 2025 is the nation's largest gathering of media professionals. It is organised by the Communications Ministry with Bernama as the implementing agency. The date of May 29 was chosen as National Journalists' Day in commemoration of the first publication of the Utusan Melayu newspaper on May 29, 1939.

Close ranks and unite behind Anwar ahead of key elections, says Ramanan
KUALA LUMPUR: PKR vice-president Datuk Seri R. Ramanan has urged party members to set aside their differences and unite behind party president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as PKR prepares for the upcoming Sabah state election and the 16th general election. He said party unity and internal stability were vital to ensuring the success of the reform agenda championed by Anwar and the party. "The struggle must continue. We need to move on, reunite, and stand firmly with the president to deliver our shared vision. Party unity and stability must be our foundation," he said. Ramanan was speaking after attending the Organisational Strengthening Seminar in Melaka, which also featured a special engagement session with Anwar. The event brought together key leaders and grassroots representatives from across the state, aimed at reinforcing party structures and mobilising support ahead of crucial national polls. "This was not just a symbolic gathering. It served as a concrete platform to reinforce the party's organisational machinery, from the grassroots right up to the central leadership," he added. He said Anwar, in his address, stressed the importance of all members being open-hearted and moving past the differences that arose during the party elections. "He reminded everyone that the election phase is over, and now is the time to close ranks, move forward together, and double down on our efforts for the future of the party and the country. "In his speech, the president also called on members to rebuild ties among themselves, even if some were disheartened by the recent election outcomes." Ramanan also expressed appreciation to the grassroots for their continued commitment, and called on all members to "close ranks" and remain focused on the party's broader mission. "Keadilan is more than just a political party. It is a people's movement. It is our hope, our home. Let us strengthen our resolve, rise together, and bring victory to Keadilan."
