UN report praises Kingdom's achievements in integrated water resources management
The event was held on the sidelines of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development at the UN's headquarters, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Wednesday.
It followed UN-Water's recognition of Saudi Arabia as one of the countries showing clear and measurable progress in integrated water resources management under SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) 6.
The Kingdom's delegation, led by Abdulaziz Al-Shaibani, the deputy minister for water at the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, presented Saudi Arabia's approach to accelerating the progress of SDG 6.
The event spotlighted successes in the sector and countries making significant strides. Saudi Arabia was highlighted in the report as a success story for its rapid progress in integrated water resources management, the SPA added.
Al-Shaibani said that the Kingdom's efforts had brought notable improvements in efficiency, coordination, and service quality between 2017 and 2023.
The Kingdom's integrated water resources management indicator rose from 57 percent to 83 percent during this period, marking one of the fastest global increases under SDG indicator 6.5.1, he said.
Al-Shaibani stressed that strong support from the Kingdom's leadership had enabled significant structural and organizational reforms to aid sustainable water management.
With substantial investments to expand and modernize water infrastructure, these efforts had raised the Kingdom's 'enabling environment' score from 42 percent in 2017 to 87 percent in 2023, he added.

PM approves modern digital ecosystem for Pakistan revenue watchdog to increase collection
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved the development of a modern, world-class digital ecosystem in the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and directed hiring of world-renowned experts, his office said, in a bid to increase revenue collection. The prime minister issued the directives at a meeting he presided over to review ongoing reforms in the FBR, during which officials briefed participants about linking FBR data to a single hub for real-time monitoring. The reforms are tied to the government's economic stabilization agenda and structural benchmarks under a $7 billion International Monetary Fund (IMF) program. Pakistan has one of the lowest tax-to-GDP ratios in the region, despite a population of more than 240 million. Speaking at the meeting, Sharif said the country's economy was moving in the right direction, thanks to the ongoing FBR reforms, and the government could only reduce tax on common people by increasing the tax base and eliminating informal economy. "An entire digital ecosystem should be created to strengthen the new [FBR] system," he said. "All data from raw material production and import, product manufacturing to consumer purchases should be linked to a single system." In June, Sharif's government set a record-high tax collection target of Rs14.13 trillion ($47.4 billion) for the fiscal year 2025–26, marking a 9 percent increase from the previous year. Officials say meeting this goal is essential to reducing reliance on external debt and ensuring long-term fiscal sustainability. The prime minister said this consolidated data, collected under the new FBR system, should be used for economic, strategic decision-making. "The system should be made so effective that the entire value chain can be directly monitored digitally," the prime minister added. Earlier this month, the FBR launched simplified digital tax returns for salaried individuals, aimed at increasing tax compliance and widening the narrow tax base.

Palestinian President Lauds Saudi Role in France's Recognition of Statehood
The Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, extended his gratitude to Saudi Arabia for its efforts that culminated in a French commitment to formally recognize the State of Palestine, reported the Saudi Press Agency (SPA). On Thursday, France's President, Emmanuel Macron, announced that Paris would recognize an independent Palestinian State at the upcoming UN General Assembly in September, to be the first major Western power to take such a move. 'Consistent with its historic commitment to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, I have decided that France will recognize the state of Palestine,' Macron posted on X. In the light of this, Abbas expressed his appreciation to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and the Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Mohammed bin Salman, for leading Saudi Arabia's efforts and honorable positions in support of Palestine. Furthermore, Abbas welcomed Macron's announcement as a bold step toward establishing peace through the two-state solution, in accordance with international legitimacy and international law. Abbas said the French move represented a victory for the Palestinian cause and underscored France's commitment to supporting the Palestinian people and their legitimate rights to their homeland. Moreover, he urged countries across the world to follow suit and recognize the State of Palestine based on the internationally-recognized two-state solution, in line with international resolutions. Saudi Arabia and France will co-chair the International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution on July 28-29, 2025, at the UN headquarters in New York. It is part of a broader push toward a two-state solution that involves recognizing a Palestinian State while guaranteeing Israel's security, in a bid to resolve the decades-old conflict. Cambodia Urges Immediate Ceasefire with Thailand Amid Border Bloodshed
Cambodia has urgently called for an immediate ceasefire with Thailand following two days of deadly border clashes. The Cambodian envoy to the UN announced this plea on Friday, as Bangkok also signaled its openness to diplomatic talks. This renewed conflict stems from a long-running border dispute that escalated dramatically on Thursday, involving jets, artillery, tanks, and ground troops. The UN Security Council convened an emergency meeting on Friday to address the crisis. Cambodia's UN ambassador, Chhea Keo, emphasized the nation's demand for an unconditional and immediate ceasefire, stating 'We ask for an immediate ceasefire—unconditionally—and we also call for a peaceful solution to the dispute,' following a closed session of the Security Council, attended by both Cambodian and Thai representatives. Meanwhile, the sound of artillery strikes continued to echo from the Cambodian side of the border on Friday. In Oddar Meanchey province, one civilian, a 70-year-old man, was killed, and five others sustained injuries. Human Cost of the Conflict The conflict has exacted a heavy toll on human lives, with Thailand's health ministry reported that over 138,000 people have been evacuated from its border regions. The ministry also confirmed 15 fatalities, including 14 civilians and one soldier, with an additional 46 wounded, among them 15 troops. Fighting resumed in three areas on Friday, according to the Thai army as Cambodian forces initiated heavy weapons fire, utilizing field artillery and BM-21 rocket systems. Thai troops responded with appropriate supporting fire. Diplomatic Efforts and Accusations Thai Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nikorndej Balankura revealed that the fighting began to subside by Friday afternoon, stating that Bangkok remained open to discussions, potentially with Malaysia's assistance. 'We are ready, if Cambodia would like to settle this matter via diplomatic channels, bilaterally, or even through Malaysia, we are ready to do that. But so far, we have not had any response,' he said, prior to the UN meeting. Malaysia currently chairs the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), a regional bloc to which both Thailand and Cambodia belong. Earlier, acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai cautioned that an escalation could lead to war, though he noted that it remained limited to clashes for now. Thai artillery damaged this pagoda in Oddar Meanchey province Both nations accused each other of initiating the conflict as Thailand specifically charged Cambodia with targeting civilian infrastructure, including a hospital hit by shells and a petrol station struck by at least one rocket. At the UN, Cambodia's envoy questioned Thailand's assertion that his country, militarily smaller and less developed, had started the conflict, stated, '(The Security Council) called for both parties to (show) maximum restraint and resort to a diplomatic solution. That is what we are calling for as well.' A History of Border Disputes This recent fighting marks a dramatic escalation in a long-standing dispute between the two neighboring countries with both Thailand and Cambodia are popular destinations for millions of foreign tourists. Their shared 800-kilometer border has dozens of contested areas. Previous conflicts erupted between 2008 and 2011, resulting in at least 28 deaths and displacing tens of thousands of people. A UN court ruling in 2013 seemingly settled the issue for over a decade. However, the current crisis began in May when a Cambodian soldier was killed in a new clash. People fled their homes on both sides of the border after the latest violence erupted Thursday's fighting concentrated on six locations, according to the Thai army, including areas around two ancient temples. Ground troops, supported by tanks, battled for territorial control. Cambodia launched rockets and shells into Thailand, while Thai forces deployed F-16 jets to strike military targets across the border. In Samraong, a Cambodian town 20 kilometers from the border, with families fleeing in vehicles with their children and belongings as gunfire erupted. Pro Bak, 41, expressed his fear, stating, 'I live very close to the border. We are scared.' He was taking his wife and children to a Buddhist temple to seek refuge. Short link : Post Views: 91
