KUCHING (Aug 3): A total of 26 out of 76 school infrastructure upgrade projects under the 'Cawangan Kerja Pendidikan' (CKP) of the Public Works Department (JKR) in Sarawak have been completed to date, said Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
Meanwhile, another 30 projects are still under construction, while 20 more are in the planning stage.
'These figures are only for Sarawak. Across Malaysia, there are many more under the same initiative, which falls under the 12th Malaysia Plan and includes continuation projects,' he told reporters when met after officiating the handing-over ceremony of the completed infrastructure upgrade project at SMK Sri Sadong in Simunjan today.
The project at SMK Sri Sadong involved the construction of 12 replacement classrooms, five units of teachers' quarters, and various other supporting facilities, with a contract value of RM28.73 million.
'This is one of 76 projects across Sarawak under the programme to rebuild and upgrade dilapidated schools,' Nanta explained.
He expressed appreciation to the contractor for fulfilling their responsibilities effectively, noting that the project was completed smoothly without any major issues.
'I would like to thank the contractor for carrying out their duties well. The project was completed without any problems,' he said.
Nanta also thanked the JKR Special Project Team 2 (PPK2), led by Dato Ir Jasmi Wahab, for their role in ensuring the contractor fulfilled their responsibilities as expected.
'We are also grateful for the cooperation from Batang Sadong MP Rodiyah Sapiee and Simunjan assemblyman Awla Dris. Special thanks as well to the Ministry of Education Malaysia (MoE) for approving the project,' he added.
Commenting on inter-agency cooperation, Nanta said the collaboration between the Ministry of Works (KKR), JKR Malaysia, and MoE has long been established.
'We've handled tens, hundreds, if not thousands of projects together. Our role as a delivery partner through our technical expertise in KKR and JKR is to support the client ministries,' he said.
'In this case, for schools, the client is the Ministry of Education. If it's a hospital or clinic, it would be the Ministry of Health. And so on with other ministries.'
He emphasised the importance of KKR and JKR's involvement, particularly in physical development projects involving roads and buildings.
'We are the leading technical agency in the country. JKR houses many experts, and that's why we have been able to shoulder this responsibility successfully over the years,' he said.
Also present at the event were MoE Secretary of the Development Division Datuk Masyati Abang Ibrahim, JKR Deputy Director-General (Infrastructure Sector) Mohd Shahrom Ahmad Saman, Rodiyah, Awla, as well as officials from various ministries and relevant agencies. alexander nanta linggi lead projects school upgrade

Opposition moots cross-party committee to draw up effective 13MP strategies

KUALA LUMPUR: The Opposition has proposed setting up a cross-party committee to examine the targets not achieved in the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP). Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin (PN-Larut) said the proposed committee would also look into more effective implementation strategies for the success of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) and beyond. ALSO READ: Time for a great reset with 13th Malaysia Plan "In the spirit of transparency and accountability, Tambun (Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) and the Cabinet must 'walk the talk' to clarify to the public what truly happened with the unachieved targets,' he said during the debate on 13MP in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (Aug 4). "There is nothing wrong with... taking a step back to reflect, assess the achievements of 12MP, and ensure we all remain grounded before new figures are presented in 13MP. "The 13MP is a national effort to shape the future of the country. It is a five-year development plan meant for all Malaysians, not just one side or another. "Whoever governs in Putrajaya must accept the reality that this plan is not the exclusive domain of any single political party; it belongs to all of us," he added. ALSO READ: 13MP must be a shared national commitment Hamzah also called on the government to clarify any compromises reached in reciprocal tariff negotiations with the United States. He said Perikatan Nasional maintains its stance that Malaysia must trade with dignity, defending its interests and sovereignty under any pressure. The 13MP targets GDP growth of between 4.5% and 5.5%, the creation of 1.2 million new jobs, and a gross national income (GNI) per capita of RM77,200, according to official government projections. ALSO READ: All 13MP projects will be monitored regularly to avoid delays However, concerns remain over the plan's viability, with questions raised about the government's fiscal capacity to fund the RM611bil allocation without placing additional strain on the public. Hamzah also asked if there was sufficient political will to implement meaningful institutional reforms, the effectiveness of proposed strategies in delivering social justice, and if the plan's indicators and targets are robust enough to guide Malaysia's progress over the next five years.
