Why Ethereum Retail Investors Remain 'Sidelined'—Even as Institutions Buy Billions
The primary drivers of this divide are a lack of capital, unequal access to information, and a difference in mindset between the two cohorts, according to experts who spoke to Decrypt on Tuesday.
At the time of writing, Ethereum is overcoming macro headwinds, undoing last week's losses with a 7.75% jump from Sunday's low, according to CoinGecko. ETH is currently changing hands for $3,661.11 after having gained 3% in the past day.
The total net assets held within U.S. spot Ethereum exchange traded funds, or ETFs, reached a record high of $21.52 billion on July 31.
Experts have said it's a clear sign of institutional appetite.
"Institutional clients turn to regulated digital asset platforms to hedge macro risk," Emma Shi, Head of HashKey OTC, told Decrypt.
The top two cryptos serve as 'alternative stores of value and potential hedges" and are increasingly being considered in this context.
This trend is a result of the activity of corporate treasuries like Bitminer (BMNR), which emerged as the world's largest holder of Ethereum, currently possessing a staggering 833,000 ETH, worth $3 billion.
Tom Lee's BitMine Builds $3 Billion Ethereum Stash, Now Third Largest Public Crypto Treasury
"We have separated ourselves among crypto treasury peers by both the velocity of raising crypto NAV per share and by the high liquidity of our stock," BitMine's Chairman Tom Lee said in a statement yesterday.
Lookonchain data provides an even more granular view of recent Ethereum buying, showing 14 fresh wallets have amassed 856,554 ETH since July 9.
Three of these wallets scooped 63,837 ETH, worth $236 million, through over-the-counter (OTC) desks at FalconX and Galaxy Digital.
Retail and Institutional Divergence
Contrasting this robust institutional demand is data from crypto intelligence platform Kiyotaka that indicates a more hesitant approach from retail investors.
The long/short ratio held by ETH futures traders has been on a downtrend since April. It suggests a pattern of underallocation and a general "sidelined" posture, the crypto analytics platform noted on X.
Large investors 'benefit from scale' and have access to 'sophisticated DeFi strategies,' which are often 'out of reach or inefficient for smaller holders,' Naman, Co-Founder & CEO of NodeOps, told Decrypt, highlighting the aforementioned divergence.
Echoing Naman's sentiment, Shi at HashKey outlined that the difference in 'mindset' is what sets retail and institutions apart.
While retail participants have a 'defensive' mindset and focus on 'recovering capital before considering new investments,' large players treat dips as a 'discount' and view them as buying opportunities.
Unlike retail traders who are generally characterized by their short-term holding windows, sophisticated holders think long-term, Shi said. Digital asset treasuries accumulating Ethereum highlights the importance of "robust risk management frameworks" and a focus on "long-term conviction in Ethereum's ecosystem," she added.
Retail traders are also hampered by lack of low interest rates, fewer arbitrage opportunities, and the kind of tradeable information common in asset manager circles, Shi said.

Pump's PUMP Is Pumping Again—Can the Solana Token Keep It Up?
The crypto market continues its climb back upwards: Bitcoin and Ethereum are demonstrating resilience, with gains helping to propel the market as a whole back above $3.8 trillion. But there's one coin making a much more impressive comeback way down on the list of the top 100 by market cap: the appropriately named PUMP, the native token of the Solana meme coin launchpad While Bitcoin's modest 2% gain to above $115,000 provides stability, it appears the real action is happening in Solana's meme coin trenches. PUMP token has exploded 35% over the past week—making it the standout performer in an otherwise choppy market. What's going on? Let's zoom out: The broader crypto market recovery comes as traditional markets find their footing after President Donald Trump's latest tariff announcements sent the S&P 500 tumbling 1.6% and the Nasdaq dropping 2.24% on Friday—their worst single-day losses since May and April. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq erased those losses today. The cryptocurrency market's 6.7% decline to begin August initially looked like the start of something uglier, but Monday's recovery has bulls breathing easier. Analysts attribute the drop primarily to profit-taking by traders following a strong rally in July, with no clear signs of panic selling or systemic weakness in the market. This narrative of "healthy consolidation" rather than collapse has emboldened dip buyers, with 95% of the top 100 cryptocurrencies posting gains in the past 24 hours. Ethereum today is up nearly 3% to above $3,600, and XRP is clinging to that all-important $3.00 price point. But with no top 10 coin breaking the 3% barrier, the real fun is reserved for meme coin traders—who really needed it after the recent bloodbath they went through. PUMP price: Bulls defeat the FUD remarkable turnaround validates our prior analysis that aggressive buybacks would eventually overwhelm selling pressure and that signs point to a price recovery—or at least heavy pressure against bears. Pump's PUMP fell to as low as $0.002283 in late July, well below the ICO price of $.004 when the token launched on July 14. The company raised $600 million after selling out its ICO in just 12 seconds, and the hype propelled PUMP to above a $6 billion fully diluted value just days later. But the hype didn't last, the price of PUMP soon came tumbling down. The company turned things around for PUMP holders when it announced token buybacks at the end of July just as the token hit bottom, which it has since carried out daily. The company is taking the daily revenue generated from its launchpad and putting it back into the chart, so far buying $23 million worth of PUMP, according to its own figures. As a result, PUMP is up more than 30% in the last seven days. So what do the charts say now? The token currently trades at $0.0034 and is approaching a critical broken support near the $0.0035-$0.0040 after the weekly surge. In terms of price direction, the last few days generated respectable bullish support after the token bottomed. Prices have already broken past two resistance levels around the $0.003 and $0.032 marks, which is a good sign for day and swing traders. The Relative Strength Index, or RSI, for PUMP sits at 67, approaching but not yet breaching the 70 overbought threshold. For context, RSI measures price momentum on a 0 to 100 scale. Readings above 70 typically signal overextension where profit-taking emerges while below 30 indicates oversold conditions ripe for bounces. At 67, PUMP shows strong buying pressure without triggering automatic-selling algorithms, suggesting room for PUMP's pump to grow. Traders would very likely interpret this as particularly bullish given the token's 35% weekly gain hasn't pushed the indicator into dangerous territory. The Average Directional Index, or ADX, for PUMP is at 27, which marks a very interesting development. ADX measures trend strength regardless of direction. As a general rule, numbers below 20 indicate no trend, 20-25 shows developing momentum, and above 25 confirms established directional movement until prices register 40 points or more, at which point the trend is considered to be very powerful. PUMP's ADX crossing above 25 signals the bearish correction that drove prices down 47% from May highs is either over or not strong enough to maintain the same bearish direction in case bears remain in play. The Exponential Moving Averages, or EMAs, for PUMP are also compelling. EMAs measure the average price of an asset over a set period of time. For PUMP, being such a young token, the 4-hour charts are where to look. The 50-period EMA (the average price of the last week or 50 candlesticks of 4 hours each) currently trades below the 200-period EMA (the average price of the last month, more specifically, 200 candlesticks of 4 hours each), and this is a textbook bearish formation for prices. But the narrowing gap between these averages (considering the prices are finally going up) suggests an impending "golden cross" reversal if prices keep heading in the same direction. When the faster EMA50 crosses above the slower EMA200, it historically marks the beginning of sustained uptrends. Smart money appears to be front-running this technical milestone. The coin is not there yet, but the price action can give bull traders some hope. The Squeeze Momentum Indicator shows 'off' status on the 4-hour chart, indicating volatility has already been released from recent compression. This diverges from daily timeframes showing continued squeeze, suggesting different trader cohorts are positioning for the next major move. When multiple timeframes align, explosive price action typically follows. The indicator currently points to a possible bounce from to the current support, which would not be unexpected considering the price spike. A trader might say it's a good accumulation zone for those expecting the recovery trend to remain in play for a while longer. Key Levels: Immediate support: $0.0030 (ascending trendline from July lows) Strong support: $0.0023 (July capitulation low and psychological floor) Immediate resistance: $0.003567 (current test level and prior rejection zone) Strong resistance: $0.004113 (50% retracement of entire decline, major breakout target) The views and opinions expressed by the author are for informational purposes only and do not constitute financial, investment, or other advice.

Ethereum Treasuries a Better Investment Than ETH ETFs: Standard Chartered
Buying shares in Ethereum treasuries is a better investment than buying ETH exchange-traded funds, an analyst wrote in a Wednesday note. Standard Chartered digital assets researcher Geoffrey Kendrick wrote Wednesday that treasuries are offering shareholders better value for money as the net asset value—the per share valuation of the asset in an ETF—is increasing compared to ETFs. "This normalisation of the net asset value multiple makes the treasury companies now very investable for investors seeking access to ETH price appreciation, increasing ETH per share (SBET uses an ETH concentration measure which is increasing) and access to staking rewards," he wrote. He added: "Given NAV multiples are currently just above 1 I see the ETH treasury companies as a better asset to buy than the US spot ETH ETFs." Kendrick's note comes as the treasuries have mushroomed but also as investors have poured assets into the nine ETH funds currently listed. SharpLink (SBET) and BitMine Immersion, among others, already hold $1.9 billion and nearly $3 billion in ETH, respectively, over the few weeks since debuting their strategies. ETH ETFs—approved last year—give investors exposure to the second largest digital coin by market value via shares that trade on stock exchanges. But companies have started buying ETH in the hope people will buy their shares as an investment. ETH can generate users returns as the coins can be used in staking—a practice where holders lock up their tokens to support the cryptocurrency's network in exchange for more ETH. Kendrick noted: "ETH treasury companies are becoming more important, in terms of flows, than their BTC equivalents. Since the start of June they have bought 1% of all ETH." Ethereum ETFs Massively Outpace Bitcoin Funds—Why ETH Demand Is Surging Both SharpLink and BitMine are copying the Strategy—formerly MicroStrategy—blueprint of buying digital assets to boost stock prices. Strategy first started buying Bitcoin in 2020 after years of low share prices and now holds 628,791 BTC worth over $72 billion. The company now works to issue debt to buy Bitcoin, and investors purchase the company's shares to get exposure to the leading digital asset. ETH was recently trading for nearly $3,675 per coin, down 1.5% over the past week but up by close to 46% in the past 30 days, according to crypto data provider CoinGecko. Roughly 50% of participants in a Myriad Markets prediction market say that Ethereum will breach $5,000 by the end of 2025. Puffer Upgrades UniFi Preconf AVS to Deliver Sub-10ms Execution With Restaked Security
Puffer Finance, a protocol launchpad specialising in Ethereum‑aligned rollups, has released an upgraded version of its Preconfirmation AVS (Preconf AVS) functionality. The new version enables execution guarantees with sub‑10 millisecond latency for OP‑based rollups, underpinned by over 3 million ETH in restaked security. Puffer Finance supports scalable protocol deployment by combining unified restaking, rollup‑based infrastructure, and modular composability. With this upgrade, its UniFi Preconf AVS delivers a production‑ready mechanism for Ethereum‑native transactions that are executed within sub‑10 ms guarantees at a fixed price, with slashing collateral and rollup revenue-sharing incentives supporting economic security. By design, rollups inherit Ethereum's approximate 12‑second block times, which limits performance for latency‑sensitive applications. Puffer's upgraded Preconf AVS addresses this by offering execution guarantees that ensure exact transaction outcomes at the time of transaction, rather than relying on later settlement prices. The enforcement mechanism leverages EigenLayer's restaked ETH model. Validators and gateway operators back their sequencing commitments with slashing risk to mitigate potential liveness failures, toxic MEV exposure, or protocol-safety faults. The deployment currently secures in excess of 3 million ETH in restaked assets, providing significant economic depth for all UniFi‑integrated rollups. Key Features of the Upgrade Delegated Gateway Rights: Validators delegate block proposer responsibilities to specialized gateways focused on sequencing. Lookahead Scheduling: Gateways receive advance visibility into upcoming L1 slots for precise coordination. Refund Mechanisms: Users are refunded if Preconf execution fails. Three‑Phase Rollout: Phase 1: Early gateway access with validator delegation, no slashing—missed events forfeit rewards. First implementation supports sub‑100 ms confirmations via the Gattaca frags‑based gateway. Phase 2: Expanded gateway participation and implementation of lookahead scheduling. Incentive structures modular and more decentralized. Phase 3: Introduction of slashing for liveness or MEV risks (ranging from ~1 ETH to 1,000 ETH), integration with Ethereum's Universal Registry Contract, post-slash challenge/fraud‑proof periods, and mechanisms to redistribute or reclaim slashed collateral. Additionally, a rewards distribution system has been introduced. Rather than routing all gains from preconfirmations to L1 proposers, a dynamic revenue-sharing model allocates incentives among validators, gateway operators, and rollup operators. Slashed funds are either refunded to affected users or retained within the Preconf rewards pool, aligning rollup operator interests with Ethereum's decentralization goals without fragmenting liquidity. About Puffer Finance Puffer FinanceFocuses on Ethereum infrastructure innovation through rollup-based solutions supported by liquid restaking and pre-confirmation (AVS) technologies. Core offerings include Puffer UniFi and UniFi AVS, built in partnership with EigenLayer. The PUFFER token is listed on major exchanges including Upbit, Bithumb, Bybit, Kraken, and Bitget.
