VW's Wolfsburg plant may move to four-day week from 2027
Volkswagen's restructuring of its Wolfsburg plant from 2027 to make way for EV-only production could result in a temporary four-day working week at the plant, works council chief Daniela Cavallo told workers on Tuesday.
Cavallo, a central figure in negotiations with management last year over cost cuts, said unions had agreed to minimum capacity utilisation for the transition period, but urged workers to take extra shifts in the run-up to compensate for the likelihood of fewer working hours in years to come.
'We have to make provisions now so that we can draw on them later ... From 2027 onwards, a temporary four-day week is not an unreasonable scenario,' Cavallo said.
Volkswagen's deal struck with unions last December to cut costs in Germany included moving production of the combustion-engine Golf from Wolfsburg to Mexico from 2027, prompting concern among some employees at the carmaker's headquarters over the future of the plant.
Cavallo sought to assure workers on Tuesday that the plant's future was in safer hands via plans to produce the electric Golf, as well as a successor to its T-Roc compact SUV by the end of the decade, pointing to the steady decline in demand for the combustion engine version of the iconic VW car.
Golf production in Wolfsburg had declined from more than a million in 2015 to just more than 300,000 in 2024, a graph compiled by the works council and seen by Reuters showed, with just 250,000 cars forecast for this year.
'The trend is an unstoppable decline ... the Golf must go to Mexico! Sooner or later. Otherwise, our plant will eventually find itself at the bottom of these statistics I just showed,' Cavallo said, according to comments published on the company intranet and seen by Reuters.

BYD to nearly triple its South African dealer network by next year
Chinese electric vehicle (EV) giant BYD plans to nearly triple its dealership network in South Africa by next year as it looks to grow its market share in the country, a senior executive told Reuters. BYD's move comes while competition in Africa's largest automotive market is growing, where sales of new energy vehicles are rising and other Chinese companies — such as GAC, Chery and GWM — are also making inroads. Launched in 2023, with its BYD battery electric ATTO 3 vehicle, the carmaker has about 13 dealerships. 'By the end of the year we will have about 20 dealerships around the country. The aim is to expand that to about 30, 35 the next year,' Steve Chang, GM of BYD Auto South Africa told Reuters in an interview on Wednesday. BYD offers six models in the South African market, with its plug-in hybrid Shark pickup, hybrid SEALION 6 and pure electric SEALION 7 SUV models launched in April, completing its hybrid and electric dual-powertrain strategy. The dealership expansion will help BYD become a known brand and capture more buyers in a country slowly transitioning to EVs. In 2024, sales of new energy vehicles (NEVs) — a term that describes battery-powered fully electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid cars — rose to 15,611 units from 7,782 units in 2023, according to data from automotive industry body Naamsa. While the share of NEVs to total car sales is still low, BYD is hoping to capture the market early on, in preparation for a meaningful transition, Chang said. 'We want to educate and cultivate the market of South Africa and make sure South African consumers can catch up with the rest of the world.' The uptake of EVs and investment in Africa is slow relative to emerging market peers due to limited charging infrastructure, unstable power supply and high import duties compared with fossil-fuelled cars. But BYD sees potential. 'South Africa is one of the most important automotive markets in the southern hemisphere. It's probably the biggest market in Africa, so it's a market we have to look at and see how we can develop the market,' Chang said.

World Bank to resume Uganda funding after halt over anti-LGBT law
The World Bank said on Thursday it will resume funding to Uganda, nearly two years after the global lender suspended new financing to the country in response to an anti-LGBT law that imposes penalties including death and life imprisonment. The bank halted funding to the East African country in August 2023 after Uganda's parliament passed the Anti-Homosexuality Act (AHA), saying the law contradicted its values. The bank had worked with Ugandan authorities to put in place strong measures to mitigate against potential harm from the law, a World Bank spokesperson told Reuters via e-mail. "We have now determined the mitigation measures rolled out over the last several months in all ongoing projects in Uganda to be satisfactory," said the spokesperson, who asked not to be named. "Consequently the bank has prepared three new projects in sectors with significant development needs — social protection, education, and forced displacement/refugees — which have been approved by the Board."
