Fact Check: Claim Paul McCartney visited Phil Collins in hospital hits a bum note

Claim:
In early August 2025, former member of The Beatles Paul McCartney visited musician Phil Collins in a hospital and performed "Hey Jude" for him.
Rating:
In early August 2025, a rumor circulated online that The Beatles legend Paul McCartney visited Genesis drummer and frontman Phil Collins in a London hospital and performed "Hey Jude" for him on his guitar.
For example, on Aug. 3, a Facebook page called Rock & Roll Universe shared the claim (archived), amassing more than 88,000 reactions and more than 16,000 shares of its post as of this writing.
The post featured two images of McCartney embracing Collins in what appeared to be a hospital room and another showing the former Beatle playing guitar while the Genesis star was resting in a hospital bed surrounded by medical staff. The caption read:
This afternoon, London's hospital halls fell unusually silent as Paul McCartney quietly arrived, carrying the same old guitar that had followed him through decades. On the fifth floor, Phil Collins lay still — frail and pale after months battling severe complications from spinal and heart conditions. As Paul entered the room, Phil's eyes slowly opened, his lips trembling without sound. Without a word, Paul sat down and began to strum "Hey Jude" — gently, with deep emotion. Each lyric poured warmth into the sterile room, moving the nurses to tears, while a single tear slid down Phil's cheek. When the final chord faded, Paul took his old friend's hand and whispered, "We're still a band, even if the only stage left is life itself." The story has since spread among musicians like a final love song between two legends.

The rumor appeared elsewhere on Facebook (archived) and on Instagram (archived). Some posts featured links in top comments leading to articles hosted by WordPress blogs, such as one advertisement-filled story hosted on a website called humansofgeorgia.net.
Snopes readers also emailed us to ask whether the claim was true, with one noting that the social media posts contained "suspicious-looking images."
However, searches of Bing (archived), DuckDuckGo (archived) and Google produced no evidence of any news media outlets reporting on a story about McCartney visiting Collins in a hospital and serenading him with "Hey Jude." Prominent news media outlets would have widely reported this moment if it were true.
Rather, the person or people who wrote the story fabricated the entire tale as one of hundreds of inspirational tales about music legends. They aimed to earn advertising revenue on websites linked from the aforementioned Facebook posts. As we will lay out later in this article, the story about McCartney visiting Collins in hospital amounted to fiction.
An examination of the Rock & Roll Universe (archived) Facebook page's posts revealed multiple indications of images and text generated using artificial intelligence (AI) software. For example, one post (archived) featured an image of singer-songwriter Bob Dylan singing on Collins' bedside. However, Sightengine, an AI-detection website, determined that there was a 99% probability that someone "likely" generated the image with AI.
There were also signs that the image of McCartney playing the guitar was AI-generated. First, he was holding the instrument as if he were right-handed, despite being known to play left-handed (archived). Second, the guitar only had five strings, despite acoustic guitars having six strings. In addition, McCartney's right hand only appeared to have three fingers and a thumb.
Snopes contacted a manager of the Rock & Roll Universe Facebook page to ask about the fictional stories displayed on its feed and we will update this story if we receive more information.
Separately, Snopes also reached out to Collins' representatives to inquire about his current health status. In late July 2025, People magazine reported (archived) that he was recovering from knee surgery, though it did not specify whether he remained hospitalized. We will update this article if we receive a response.

North Carolina could bring back iconic uniform for 2025 football season

Will the Tar Heels bring back an iconic uniform? The excitment around the North Carolina Tar Heels' football program is at an all-time high as they get ready to usher in a new era under Bill Belichick. As the legendary head coach begins his first season with the program, many are hoping he can turn things around. There will be a lot of attention on the program nationally as well. Belichick is obviously a big name in the business and landing a head coach like him was huge for the program. It also opened up the door for new opportunities in terms of revenue and fun ideas for the program. That includes the return of a classic uniform possibly this season. Per Taylor Vippolis of Inside Carolina, the Tar Heels have placed an order for the 1980's throwback uniform, hoping to wear them this year. The Tar Heels brought back the navy uniforms a few years back which ended up being a hit. This classic uniform is a fan favorite, donned by Lawrence Taylor among other Tar Heel legends. Bringing it back would be a HUGE hit with the fanbase and with Belichick's ties to Taylor, it makes a lot of sense. There's no word on if these were approved or what games they would wear them for but I can't see why they would say no. Let's hope we get to see these at some point this season. ‘Genesis' surf documentary chronicles trip of a lifetime for Huntington Beach duo

Some of the most beautiful waves that Luke Guinaldo and Dylan Sloan have ever surfed were at a secret spot near Nias, an island located off the western coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The two Huntington Beach surfers marveled at the waves. Then Sloan tried riding one. 'The wave went so below sea level, I couldn't drop it,' Sloan said. 'It just fully threw me over the falls.' Guinaldo watched the situation unfold. 'I didn't see that he didn't make the drop, but I look back and I'm like, 'Oh my gosh, where is he?'' he said. 'I see Dylan pop out, and I'm dying laughing because I knew he went over the falls on the biggest wave of his life. I can't imagine he's ever had a wipeout that gnarly.' A realization soon set in. 'I was kind of tripping,' Guinaldo added, starting to laugh. 'I was like, 'Dang, he already took his wipeout, now I'm next.' Guinaldo, 20, and Sloan, 17, won't soon forget that month-long surf trip to Indonesia they took from mid-April to mid-May this year. Now others can enjoy it, too. 'Genesis,' a surf film chronicling their trip, debuted Friday night with a pair of shows at Surfing the Nations in downtown Huntington Beach. Hurley, which sponsors both surfers, budgeted the trip, but Guinaldo said this was still very much a do-it-yourself sort of film project. Austin DeSousa served as cinematographer. 'Dylan had been to Indonesia, I had been to Indonesia, but we never went together,' said Guinaldo, a 2022 Huntington Beach High graduate, during a group interview with the Daily Pilot. 'One night, after hanging out, I was showing him videos of my trip last summer, and he was showing me videos of his trip last summer. I was like, 'We've got to go together and score waves, make a movie out of it.' That's kind of how it was born.' Guinaldo has been surfing on the World Surf League men's Qualifying Tour for the last few years. Sloan is still in school, an incoming senior on the Huntington Beach High surf team. Together, they had plenty of adventures during their weeks in Indonesia. DeSousa, who had never before been out of the country, said he would have to leave his camera equipment outside to de-fog due to the high humidity. 'One of my favorite parts is meeting a lot of people from all around the world,' said DeSousa, a resident of Orange. 'We met this group from Portugal, and they were super nice. We saw them at two different surf spots we went to, [surf resorts] Macaronis and Hollow Trees. I got to surf with them one time, and they were super supportive of everything we were doing.' Highlights also included a 17-hour car ride from one side of the country to the other, so they could get to a harbor and catch a ferry. 'The harbor was disgusting, so bad,' Guinaldo said. 'We're getting ripped off, we don't know how much the tickets cost and people are taking our money, but we're just smiles all the way through. Then we get on the ferry and it's hot and sweaty and loud, people are yelling and playing music. We just toughed through it … and it was awesome.' More gratifying times came atop the waves themselves. The surfers stayed at the Point resort and found 'the most perfect' wave with the resort owner, Sloan said. He called the finished film 'amazing.' 'That's the dream that we wanted,' Sloan said. 'It's definitely something people have never seen before … To miss school for a month and go on the best surf trip ever? Sign me up.' The premiere Friday night was successful, with the first showing selling out so a second was added later that night. The surfers thanked their families and also Brett Simpson, a two-time U.S. Open of Surfing champion from Huntington Beach who is now Hurley's head of sports marketing. They hope to hold a screening of 'Genesis' at Huntington Beach High in the future, Guinaldo said.

Israeli music legend Efraim Shamir brought in for police questioning

Efraim Shamir, famous for his work in the popular Israeli rock band Kaveret, is believed to be under suspicion of incitement to terrorism and violence against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Israeli singer Efraim Shamir has been brought in for questioning by the Israel Police national crime unit Lahav 443, the police announced Wednesday. Shamir, famous for his work in the popular Israeli rock band Kaveret, is believed to be under suspicion of incitement to terrorism and violence against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Speaking to Maariv, Shamir's lawyer, Yair Nahorai, said that his client denies the accusations and is against violence of any kind. Some reports have alleged that Shamir made a post on social media about Netanyahu, saying, "A lying son of a liar must die." Regarding this, Nahorai said they would respond to these accusations after Shamir is finished speaking with the police. A history of controversy on social media Speaking to Ynet, Shamir said he didn't know why he was being questioned. The singer is known for his controversial and argumentative social media posts and openly negative view of Netanyahu and the current government. For example, in 2019, when Nechama Rivlin, the wife of then-president Reuven Rivlin, passed away, Shamir posted on social media "Why not Sara?" in reference to the prime minister's Sara Netanyahu. Speaking to Ynet, he suggested there may be a connection between his online activity and his being called in for questioning. "It may be because of posts on Facebook, but I really don't know," he told Ynet. This is a developing story. Solve the daily Crossword
