BJP's Christian outreach in Nilambur backfires, Ezhava support dips

KOCHI: The BJP's experiment to tap Christian votes in Nilambur seems to have backfired as figures indicate it may have lost support of the Ezhava community. The leadership, initially hesitant to enter the fray, decided to field a candidate following criticism from within the party.
The party roped in Mohan George, who is closely associated with the Church, after NDA partner Bharath Dharma Jana Sena (BDJS) refused to contest. If the BJP claims that a section of Christians voted for Mohan, it means it lost its Ezhava and Nair votes. The statement by SNDP Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan, that Hindus in Nilambur will vote for CPM, may have seemingly influenced the Ezhava community.
Alleging that both LDF and UDF are trying to garner votes by appeasing religious fundamentalists, BJP had launched a campaign based on development issues. Despite the setback, it claims it could retain its vote share amidst high-octane campaign by opponents.
Backfired
Christian community has 14% vote share in Nilambur, while Nair and Ezhava communities have 10% share each. BJP planned to unite them by exposing the Muslim appeasement by the LDF and UDF. However, it could add only 53 votes to its 2021 tally.

‘Collapse of governance': Cong, AAP hit out at BJP as waterlogging paralyses Chandigarh

As the heavy rainfall that lashed Chandigarh on Tuesday again exposed the fragility of the city's infrastructure, both the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party- (BJP-) led Municipal Corporation (MC), saying that this is the 'collapse of governance' and that the party's development model has been 'exposed'. Chandigarh Pradesh Congress Committee president H S Lucky said that the MC has 'completely failed' in ensuring basic flood management despite being in power for years. Lucky said that while Chandigarh proudly holds the second rank in the Swachh Survekshan survey, just one hour of rainfall was enough to paralyse traffic, disrupt daily life, and leave residents stranded across several parts of the city. 'This is not just waterlogging — this is the collapse of governance. The city came to a grinding halt because the BJP has failed to create even a basic drainage and disaster-preparedness system,' he remarked. Lucky further pointed out that nine out of the last ten mayors of Chandigarh have been from the BJP, yet little to nothing has been done to strengthen civic infrastructure. 'The BJP has enjoyed power in the Municipal Corporation for years, but the condition of the city's roads and drains clearly shows their negligence. Citizens are paying the price for political apathy,' he added. The Congress leader demanded immediate corrective measures from the municipal authorities to restore public safety and prevent such chaos from recurring in the future. He urged the administration to initiate a complete overhaul of the city's drainage and urban planning systems, ensuring that residents do not continue to suffer during the monsoon season. 'The people of Chandigarh deserve better governance and accountable leadership. It is time the municipal authorities wake up to their responsibilities,' Lucky said. Meanwhile, the AAP also came down heavily on the BJP-led MC, saying that the downpour has 'exposed the so-called development model of the BJP,' as flooded streets, stranded vehicles, and hours of traffic snarls left citizens struggling. 'For years, the Municipal Corporation has been under BJP's control. Crores of rupees from the budget went into contractors' pockets, yet the city neither got a robust drainage system nor a flood management plan. The BJP has treated Chandigarh only as a vote bank, ignoring the real issues of its citizens,' AAP Chandigarh president Vijay Pal Singh said. He further questioned the utilisation of civic funds, pointing out that the cleaning and maintenance of drains were often carried out only on paper. Singh demanded a high-level probe into the alleged negligence and corruption, with strict action against officials and contractors found guilty. 'The BJP is only skilled in hoardings, advertisements, and sloganeering. Their real contribution to the people is roads full of potholes and waterlogging,' the AAP city chief concluded.

Speed up selection of mandal chiefs: BJP's Dharampal Singh

Lucknow: UP state general secretary Dharampal Singh on Tuesday asked party functionaries from Bundelkhand region to expedite the selection of mandal presidents where they are yet to be appointed. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Chairing a meeting in Kanpur, Singh reviewed all the campaigns and programmes, including Har Ghar Tiranga Abhiyan, Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam and Partition Horror Memorial Day, and gave instructions regarding the preparations for panchayat and graduate legislative council elections. He said the work of the organisation gains momentum only through dialogue, contact and coordination. He said active participation of everyone should be ensured in the voter revision programme. "Every voter should be contacted, and all those who are not on the voter list should be included," he said. Singh added that the implementation of every campaign should be effective and timebound. He termed the party workers as strong pillars of their booths and asked the district presidents to develop the habit of regular visits to the mandals and connect with the old workers, leaders and officials of the organisation by communicating with them. "BJP is not just an election organisation but a political party that works continuously for social service, nation-building and public awakening. The organisation will be strong only when the party workers connect with people," he said. Singh mentioned that the party needs to end the lies and confusion being spread by the opposition parties, including SP and Congress, with alertness and truth.

Parl panel pitches for 35% of GDP as investment to achieve 8% growth rate

A parliamentary panel on Tuesday pitched for raising the investment rate from 31 per cent of the GDP to 35 per cent to achieve the ambitious growth target of 8 per cent. The Standing Committee on Finance also urged the government to maintain sustainable, growth-oriented energy policies that prioritise affordability and efficiency while balancing climate commitments with economic and social objectives. The committee headed by BJP leader Bhartruhari Mahtab also suggested that the Ministry/Central Electricity Authority (CEA) expedite the development of pumped storage projects (PSPs), recognising their critical role in strengthening energy security and reducing import dependency. The panel noted that the investment rate must increase to about 35 per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP) from the current 31 per cent to achieve the ambitious growth target of 8 per cent annually for at least a decade. "Financing this may result in higher levels of current account deficit (CAD), which is challenging under current global circumstances. This emphasises the need for domestic-led growth, for which deregulation is crucial," it said in its report. The committee highlighted the collaborative approach through the deregulation task force chaired by the cabinet secretary. The panel felt that this model of cooperative federalism -- facilitating dialogue with states on best practices in land, labour, capital, and regulatory reforms -- can streamline business processes and foster an investor-friendly environment. It said tailored fiscal reforms may be promoted in highly indebted states to improve their fiscal health while maintaining their capacity to invest in critical infrastructure and social development. With regard to farm sector, the panel said the vast untapped potential of India's agriculture sector as a pivotal driver for inclusive economic growth. "To unlock this potential, the committee emphasises a dual approach: addressing immediate challenges while implementing long-term structural reforms. For short-term stability, the committee observes that the government's strategy such as maintaining buffer stocks; regulating market supplies; and subsidising key food items helps to stabilise food prices and ensure affordable access to essential commodities," the report said. To further enhance agricultural productivity and foster financial inclusion, the committee recommended acceleration of digital initiatives. "This includes digitising land records and implementing the agri-stack, a technological framework designed to link farmers' produce with banking and credit systems. This would facilitate transparent and timely disbursement of crop loans," it said. The panel also urged that these digital tools be expanded nationwide, with local youth being trained to assist in data collection, thereby creating employment opportunities and improving data accuracy. The committee also believed that promoting diversified crop production, strengthening supply chain infrastructure, and encouraging private sector participation in agri-tech innovation are vital steps. These coordinated efforts can effectively mitigate supply-side inflation, sustainably boost farmers' incomes, and transform agriculture into a powerful engine for India's growth, it said. Observing that the current global trade environment, marked by protectionism and geopolitical volatility, presents a significant opportunity for India, the committee believed this situation can be leveraged to pursue the guiding principle of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas' and build an 'Atmanirbhar Bharat'. This path involves exploring new markets while simultaneously strengthening domestic manufacturing. The committee highlighted the need for sound government finances, with an emphasis on improving the quality of expenditure, particularly capital expenditure, and recognise the pivotal role of AI and data for effective governance. The committee also noted that despite positive corporate earnings, investment in people -- through higher wages, reskilling, and mental health support -- is essential for increased productivity. The committee concluded that India's economic roadmap must aim not only for a short-term USD 5 trillion economy but also for sustained, inclusive, and resilient long-term growth. To achieve this vision, the committee recommended a multi-pronged approach that includes strengthening government finances and nurturing growth engines like innovation and skills development. The committee also recommended the establishment of an indigenous, government-owned AI server to address privacy concerns, improve efficiency, and harness data for informed policy-making. The panel further suggested prioritising rural and urban infrastructure and investing in people. This strategy, focused on balanced energy policies, price stability, and robust support for MSMEs and women entrepreneurs, should aim to drive inclusive and sustainable growth for a self-reliant India, it added.
