Tired of being ghosted by HR? Not anymore: This country is making a law to shake up the hiring process

Fines for keeping candidates in the dark
A global problem, local solutions
AI hiring tools under scrutiny
If you have ever spent hours perfecting your CV, sat through multiple interview rounds, and then… nothing — you're not alone. Job seekers across the globe are all too familiar with the cold silence that follows an interview, a phenomenon known as HR ghosting . But in Ontario, Canada, that silence may soon be illegal.Starting January 1, 2026, companies with 25 or more employees in the province will be required to respond to job applicants within 45 days of an interview, regardless of whether a hiring decision has been made. The landmark rule, reported by CNBC Make It, aims to curb a frustrating practice that has left nearly half of job seekers hanging without closure. The law also tackles another troubling trend: ghost job postings . These are job ads for roles companies have no intention of filling, often used to collect resumes or create the illusion of growth. Under the new rules, employers must clearly state whether a role is actively being recruited for and disclose if they are using artificial intelligence to screen candidates.'It makes clear that if someone applies to your company and takes the time to interview, you owe them a clear response and a decision,' said Bonnie Dilber, a recruiting leader at software company Zapier, in her interview with CNBC Make It. 'That feels like a minimum expectation. People who apply to jobs deserve to understand what's happening behind the scenes.'Non-compliance won't just hurt a company's reputation — it could cost them up to 100,000 Canadian dollars (around $72,500 USD), according to Bloomberg. First-time offenders, however, may receive warnings or smaller penalties.Data from hiring platform Greenhouse shows just how widespread the issue is: 50% of job seekers report being ghosted after interviews, and 17% of all job listings in the second quarter of 2025 were for positions that companies never intended to fill. The frustration isn't limited to Canada. Lawmakers in the United States are also looking at solutions. New Jersey's proposal would require companies to notify interviewed candidates of decisions, remove filled job listings within two weeks, and label non-existent roles — or face fines of up to $5,000. Kentucky's attempt to pass similar legislation failed, while California's version is currently under committee review.Dilber predicts AI-related hiring regulations might arrive even faster than anti-ghosting laws in other regions. New York City already became the first to ban the use of AI hiring tools without bias audits in 2023. With AI playing a bigger role in screening candidates, transparency could become a central demand from job seekers and lawmakers alike.

Apple Begins iPhone 17 Production in India Ahead of Global Launch
Apple has quietly started manufacturing its upcoming iPhone 17 in India, marking another big step in its efforts to diversify production beyond China. According to reports, Foxconn has begun assembling units at its new Bengaluru facility, months before the official launch event. This development signals Apple's growing reliance on India as both a manufacturing hub and a consumer market. The Bengaluru plant, located in Devanahalli, is Foxconn's second-largest facility outside China and was built with an investment of nearly USD 2.8 billion (around Rs 25,000 crore). Production is still on a limited scale, with engineers from Taiwan and other regions fine-tuning processes. Alongside this, Foxconn's Chennai unit is also engaged in building the new iPhone models, ensuring multiple supply sources from India. Over the past two years, Apple has significantly scaled up its India operations. For the financial year ending March 31, 2025, the company manufactured iPhones worth USD 22 billion, reflecting a sharp 60 percent growth from the previous year. CEO Tim Cook even confirmed that a majority of iPhones sold in the US during the June quarter were sourced from India. This underlines the country's rising importance in Apple's global supply chain. Apple is not slowing down. Industry insiders suggest the company aims to ramp up production to 60 million iPhones this year, a steep rise compared to the 35–40 million units produced last year. Exports from India are also expected to double as Apple works to meet rising demand in the US and other global markets. On the consumer front, Apple's sales in India are steadily improving. Shipments grew more than 21 percent in the first half of 2025, totaling 5.9 million units. The iPhone 16 was the top-selling model, helping Apple register nearly 20 percent higher shipments in the June quarter compared to last year. However, Apple still trails rivals like Vivo, which led the Indian smartphone market with a 19 percent share, while Apple captured 7.5 percent. The buzz now shifts to Apple's much-awaited September launch event. If timelines align, Apple will announce the event date on August 26, with the grand unveiling scheduled for September 9. Pre-orders are expected to begin on September 12, and the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max could hit stores globally, including India, on September 19. Ahead of this, the iOS 26 update is likely to roll out on September 16 for existing iPhone users. As always, Apple's September showcase will feature more than just iPhones. The company is tipped to introduce the Apple Watch Series 11, Watch Ultra 3, new AirPods Pro, a refreshed Apple TV 4K, and possibly the third-generation HomePod. Another October event will likely spotlight new Macs and iPads powered by the M5 chip. When it comes to pricing, the base iPhone 17 is expected to start at around Rs 79,999 in India, while the iPhone 17 Air may be priced at Rs 89,999. The Pro models could see a price increase due to higher production costs and possible tariffs in the US. While Apple kept the iPhone 16 Pro lineup slightly more affordable last year, all eyes are now on how the brand balances pricing with the significant upgrades expected this year. Odisha sets target of becoming developed state by 2036: Deputy CM Deo
Mumbai, Aug 19 (PTI) Odisha is open to any kind of investment which adds to its growing economy as it has set a target of becoming a developed state by 2036 and achieving a GDP of USD 1.5-trillion by 2047, Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo said on Tuesday. Speaking on the sidelines of the 4th CII East India Summit 2025 here, Deo also exhorted the industry to invest in Odisha and create more jobs in the state. 'The Prime Minister has set a target of (making India a developed nation) 2047 whereas Odisha has set a target of 2036. That is when Odisha is going to complete its 100 years. So, we are trying to move ahead and put whatever is expected by the Central government from the state," said Deo, who holds the portfolio of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Empowerment and the Ministry of Energy. Sounding confident of achieving the state's own targets, he said that Odisha is going to be a major contributor in the Viksit Bharat 2047 mission of the Indian Government. 'We would like to invite people into tourism, agri-food processing and steel. We already have a lot of investment in steel but then we would look at value addition on steel products. Apart from that, in the energy sector, we are a coal-bearing state where a lot of thermal power is generated. We are looking for floating solar, pump storage and battery storage projects, any kind of investment where the GDP can be increased," he said. At the same time, the state also wants to develop agro-industries and cut the use of fertilisers, he said. 'We can develop tourism. We want to do agri-tourism because nobody looks at agriculture from the tourism point of view, where a farmer can have people come and stay on his farm. So that kind of tourism potential we have," Deo stated. Stating that Odisha has a lot of beautiful monuments and sites, he said, 'We are not trying to only target foreign tourists but Indian tourists. 'But the target which has been set by the Government of India, we are going to be one of the major contributors in that," Deo emphasized. As an individual, he said, he is of the opinion that people (investors/ industry) should be given a level-playing field to attract long-term investment rather than giving them incentives as they will be there only till some other state doesn't offer them a better incentive. 'If you want only short-term incentives to be given, then investment will not last long. We want employment generation schemes to be put in, where the local population of Odisha does not have to migrate out of the state and they get jobs at their doorstep," he said. 'Now, all the policies are for the investors who have to look at that policy and then come. But we can't come up with a policy to suit one individual," he added. Landlocked states will never be able to steal a march over states that have a forced climate, he said, and added, 'Look East. We have come to the West to ask the West to also look East. If the sun rises there, the sun will set here." PTI IAS MR MR view comments First Published: August 19, 2025, 18:15 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Mutual Fund's foreign assets drop 5.6% to USD 8.3bn in FY25: RBI
Indian mutual funds' overseas assets dropped 5.6% to USD 8.3 billion in FY25, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said on Monday. At the end of FY24, Indian mutual funds held assets of over USD 8.81 billion in foreign assets, as per the central bank's annual survey of foreign assets and liabilities of mutual funds. As a result, the net foreign liabilities of MFs increased to US$ 22.2 billion in March 2025 from US$ 16.6 billion a year ago. Meanwhile, Foreign liabilities of MFs increased by 19.9% during 2024-25 to US$ 30.5 billion (at market value) in March 2025, due to the rise in units issued to non-residents, RBI noted. Non-residents of United Arab Emirates (UAE), the United States of America (USA), the United Kingdom (UK) and Singapore held the largest share in MF units, both in terms of face value as well as at market value, the central bank noted.
