Basavanna represents all communities not just Lingayats, says Kore

The Hindu08-05-2025

'The 12th century social reformer Basavanna is not just limited to Lingayats but represents all sections and communities in society,' the former Rajya Sabha member and Chairman of KLE Society Prabhakar Kore has said.
Inaugurating the Basaveshwara Jayanti programme organised by Sri Basaveshwara Study Chair of Karnatak University in Dharwad on Thursday, he said that Basavanna initiated social revolution in the 12th century through which he strived hard to provide equality to the downtrodden and women.
Terming Basavanna a visionary, Dr. Kore said that there is still a lot of work to do towards spreading his message.
'The study chair should take up work translating the Vachanas of Basavanna and other Vachanakaras to other Indian languages so as to spread the message to the people residing in other States. Already, there is awareness on Basavanna in Maharashtra and Telangana where Basaveshwara's birth anniversary is celebrated in a grand manner,' he said.
The former Vice-Chancellor of Karnatak University K.B. Gudasi said that Vachana literature has great significance and carries a universal message.
Through the concept of Dasoha (mass feeding), Basavanna facilitated coming together of various communities and harmonious living. In fact, Basaveshwara's Vachanas provide solution to several of the present day maladies, he said.
Inaugurating the Basaveshwara Library, Sri Sharathchandra Swami of Kundur Mutt in Mysuru said that it is regrettable to note that Basavanna is being used like a commodity.
'Basaveshwara is a different person altogether. Through Anubhava Mantapa, he advocated democracy and his principles and views are like guidelines to the social reformers and those ruling the country,' he said.
Presiding over the function, Acting Vice-Chancellor of Karnatak University Jayashree S. said that Basavanna had raised his voice against discrimination based on sex in the 12th century and there is a need for sensitising students more about such visionaries.
Registrars A. Chennappa and N.Y. Mattihal, Finance Officer C. Krishnamurthy, coordinator of the study chair C.M. Kundagol, scholar Viranna Rajur and others were present.
On the occasion, members of Nirantana Foundation presented a dance drama based on Basavanna's Vachanas and a book on Fa.Gu. Halakatti authored by Ujwala Hiremath was released.

Can't expect PM to start dialogue with Pak gen: Samik

1 2 Kolkata: BJP's Rajya Sabha MP Samik Bhattacharya on Thursday said that while countries across the world were asking them to start a dialogue with Pakistan, the neighbouring state had not left any ground for India to do that. "Wherever we are going, the countries are asking us to open a dialogue with Pakistan. Everything can be sorted out through dialogue only. Who should we talk to? Is it general Asim Munir?" said Bhattacharya while addressing the Indian diaspora in Brussels. "The generals of the country offer salutes to the coffins of the terrorists in their namaj-e-janaza. Can PM Narendra Modi start a dialogue with them? He can talk to the Prime Minister of the country. The world cannot expect PM Modi to start a dialogue with general Munir," Bhattacharya added.

Will set up audio-visual guides in Shaniwarwada: Shekhawat

Pune: Union minister of culture and tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat 's visit to Shaniwarwada on Thursday raised the hope of history buffs with his announcement of using technology to enhance the visitor experience. However, it also brought disappointment to the residents living within 100m of the monument, as he did not announce any relief to allow construction activity in the vicinity. The Union minister, after his visit to the monument, assured of helping in the restoration work as per the existing rules. "We will use modern technology such as the audio-visual guide system to enhance visitor experience," he said. According to the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains (AMASR) Act, 1958, no construction activity is permitted within 100 meters of a heritage site. Over 1,000 properties with more than 30,000 residents reside within 100m of Shaniwarwada. They are unable to get permission to redevelop the old wadas, which are in a dilapidated state. Shekhawat was accompanied by Rajya Sabha member Medha Kulkarni and a few local residents. The minister, while speaking to mediapersons, said, "The rule is as per AMASR Act. It is not limited to only one monument but is applicable across the country. I appeal to all citizens to support the govt to protect such heritage sites by abiding by the laws." Shekhawat visited Shaniwarwada following the request of Kulkarni, who took up the issue of restoration of the monument. "It is such an important monument in the history of the Maratha empire. We have been requesting the govt to take some steps for its restoration so that the future generations know the history," Kulkarni said.
