Blockbuster auctions of dinosaur skeletons don't do science any favours
Last week, a juvenile specimen of Ceratosaurus nasicornis, one of the four skeletons of the ancient species known to exist, was auctioned off by Sotheby's for US$30.5 million.
During many of these sales, it isn't clear who is purchasing the fossil and where it might eventually end up. Some argue that these kinds of sales increase philanthropy in fields such as palaeontology.
Take Christie's 2020 sale of 'Stan' for example. The nearly complete Tyrannosaurus rex specimen changed hands for a record-breaking US$31.8 million. After the mystery sale, there was much speculation over its fate, and palaeontologists were relieved when Stan found its home at the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, expected to be completed this year.
The Stegosaurus skeleton 'Apex' was sold at a Sotheby's auction for a staggering US$44.6 million in July 2024, the most expensive auctioned dinosaur fossil. It was bought by Kenneth Griffin, founder and CEO of the hedge fund Citadel, who in turn loaned it to the American Museum of Natural History in New York for four years.
In addition to T.rex fossils, auction houses have sold skeletons of Triceratops, Diplodocus, Allosaurus, Stegosaurus and the extremely rare and birdlike Deinonychus.

How a rare whisky's box can bump its value, and the makers getting creative
Over the last 10 years, rare whisky has seen significant price increases and fluctuations, with some bottles fetching millions at auction. But what is in the bottle is not all that matters. These days, packaging plays an important role in determining the value of a rare vintage, according to Jonny Fowle, global head of spirits at Sotheby's auction house. 'Presentation in whisky is a key factor,' he says. Unlike wine, whisky can maintain its condition even when placed on a display shelf in a collector's home, so the allure of a bottle can lie in how it looks. This is one reason why there has been an explosion of creativity in the packaging of rare whiskies in recent years, Fowle says. Nasa to slash workforce by one-fifth amid efficiency drive
About 20 per cent of Nasa 's employees are set to depart the US space agency. Advertisement The National Aeronautics and Space Administration said in a statement on Friday that around 3,870 people were expected to depart. The remaining number of employees at the agency would be around 14,000, it said. The voluntary resignation programme is part of a broad push from President Donald Trump 's administration to reduce the United States ' federal workforce. The numbers were subject to change as Nasa reviews applications, including if an employee withdrew from the programme or a resignation was not approved, the space agency said in its statement on Friday.
