Suge Knight says Tupac begged for death and friends smoked his ashes
Knight, 60, the only living witness to Shakur's final hours, recounted the chaotic night of Sept. 7, 1996, when their black BMW came under fire in a drive-by shooting near the Las Vegas Strip.
After the pair were rushed to the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada, Knight said Shakur, fearing prosecution for a gang-related assault earlier that night, begged to be killed.
'Kill me. Shoot me,' Shakur allegedly pleaded, according to Knight's interview with People.
Shakur's mother, Afeni Shakur, a former Black Panther, allegedly gave her son pills to ease his suffering, Knight claimed.
When doctors attempted to revive him, Knight says she intervened: 'Don't ever do that again ... Let him go.'
Shakur was declared dead six days later, on Sept. 13.
According to Knight, Afeni insisted on an immediate cremation. He paid $1 million in cash to have it done. That same night, in what Knight described as a symbolic tribute, several of Shakur's close friends allegedly rolled his ashes into a blunt and smoked them.
Knight, on probation at the time, says he abstained.
Despite a tumultuous music career that spanned just five years, Shakur made an indelible mark on the world of hip-hop. He sold more than 75 million records worldwide, including the diamond-certified album 'All Eyez on Me,' which included the hits 'California Love (Remix),' 'I Ain't Mad at Cha' and 'How Do U Want It.' He also found success as an actor, starring in the films 'Poetic Justice,' 'Juice' and 'Above the Rim.'
Although Shakur was born in New York and spent his youth in Baltimore and Marin City, he credited Oakland with launching his music career after he connected with the East Bay rap outfit Digital Underground.
In 2023, the Oakland City Council unanimously approved the renaming of a section of MacArthur Boulevard to Tupac Shakur Way in honor of the rapper. In 2016, the city also issued a proclamation naming June 16 as Tupac Shakur Day.
'I give all my love to Oakland, if I'ma claim somewhere I'ma claim Oakland, even if I don't live there,' Shakur said in a 1993 interview.
The new revelations come amid renewed scrutiny over Shakur's killing.
He has claimed Sean 'Diddy' Combs ordered the hit, an allegation Combs has repeatedly denied and which authorities say has never led to Combs being considered a suspect.
Afeni Shakur died at the age of 69 on May 2, 2016. The cause was believed to be cardiac arrest, according to the Marin County Sheriff's Office.
Nearly 30 years after the shooting, Knight says he still can't bring himself to listen to Tupac's music.
'It was a part of me that changed my life forever,' he said. 'When Pac died, I saw the whole sky turn a reddish orange.'

The attorney for the family of 24-year-old Gaia Costa who was tragically hit by a BMW SUV driven by the wife of Lufthansa airline's billionaire CEO says they feel 'destroyed' following the babysitter's death in Sardinia. Bradford dad wins brand new BMW and cash prize in dream car competition
A BRADFORD dad has clinched a life-changing prize worth £139,000 - including a brand new BMW – after winning an online competition. Zak Burnley, from Bradford, won the £89,000 BMW M3 Touring alongside a £50,000 cash prize in BOTB's weekly Dream Car Competition. The 30-year-old warehouse operative was at home when BOTB presenters Christian Williams and Katie Knight turned up to deliver the incredible news – a moment he initially mistook for a parcel drop-off. 'I thought it was the Amazon delivery driver,' Zak said. 'Then I opened the door and was gobsmacked. 'It's the first time I've ever won anything this big, so I'm buzzing.' The BMW M3 Touring is a high-performance powerhouse, boasting a 3.0-litre i6 twin-turbo engine, 523bhp, and a top speed of 155mph. 'The new car ticks all the right boxes,' Zak said. 'It's family-friendly, but also perfect for having a bit of fun in. 'I've currently got a BMW and just love driving them – I played for this one as I thought it was a beautiful-looking car.' But the surprises did not stop at the bonnet. When the BOTB team opened the boot, they revealed a briefcase filled with £50,000 in cash. 'We'll be able to live so much more comfortably now,' said Zak's girlfriend Gabrielle, who was in on the surprise. The couple recently welcomed a baby daughter and are already planning how to put the money to good use. Zak said the winnings will go towards a much-needed family holiday and will help make special occasions like Christmas extra memorable. He also plans to sell his current BMW to upgrade Gabrielle's car. Gabrielle is also a regular BOTB player, and the pair often compare their entries each week to see who came closest. Christian said: 'Zak's reaction was brilliant – completely speechless at first. 'The BMW M3 Touring is a stunning, powerful car and a real driver's dream. I'm thrilled for him.' Co-presenter Katie added: 'It's such a joy to deliver this kind of news – especially to someone like Zak who's been playing for a while and just welcomed a new baby. What a time to win.' BOTB hands over the keys to a dream car each week, as well as offering lifestyle prizes. It also offers people the chance to win a holiday, cash, tech, cars, and more in its Instant Wins Competition. Founded in 1999, BOTB has given away £101.3 million worth of cars so far.

Man convicted in violent home-invasion robbery in S.F.'s Crocker Amazon
A man involved in a violent home invasion in the Crocker Amazon neighborhood was convicted of robbery and carjacking, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins's Office announced Thursday. Prosecutors said 22-year-old Montana Jones was part of a four-person robbery operation that targeted a San Francisco home on February 14, 2024. Evidence and testimony during the trial showed that on the morning of the crime, four armed men, wearing ski masks and gloves, drove from East Oakland and broke into the occupied home, prosecutors said. They quickly went to the bedrooms and accosted the residents with their firearms, demanding to know where they kept their valuables, prosecutors said. One suspect hit a resident in the head with a firearm and forced him into the bathroom with his wife, prosecutors said. Another resident, after forcibly being disrobed, was pushed into a bathroom and hit in the face, prosecutors said. The suspects stole jewelry, cash and the residents' BMW car, prosecutors said. 'This was a violent and deeply disturbing crime that violated the sanctity of the home of peaceful San Franciscans,' said Assistant District Attorney John Roman, one of the prosecutors of the case. 'Our office is committed to pursuing justice for the victims and ensuring that those responsible are held fully accountable under the law.' Prosecutors said Jones was in custody, and his sentencing hearing was scheduled for August 25. Jones was convicted of four counts of first-degree residential robbery with a gun enhancement and one count of carjacking with a gun enhancement, prosecutors said.
